Making VERY SURE that communication was crystal clear I paid the $60 for the first night and we went to our room. Arrive to the room to find the heaters busted, so i bundle up in the blankets and grab my laptop. Their internet speed is comparable to '95 dial-up and seems to kick off for long periods of time. Feeling like I should have stayed at the Econolodge directly next door, which is only $50 a night.( Even though Dunes bright neon sign CLEARLY STATES it has the best price in town ) But for at $30 a night after this I figured it's worth saving the money. When I go to take a shower at this point i'm not too surprised to find I am left with no soap or shampoo.
Now keep in mind none of this is what really irritated me. What really got under my skin was when I walked down to the main lobby the supposed manager was at the front desk. I told her my room number and asked to stay another night. She said thats fine that will be $40, I begin to argue saying the clerk from last night made a deal with me and that I am only supposed to pay $30, She only says "No." and coldly cuts me off. I ask to speak to the manager and a condescending expression covers her face, she raises her eyebrow , lets out a snide laugh and barks, "I am the manager."
I walk upstairs to my fiancée and explain that were just going to have to pay the $40. A little upset we agree it's not that big of a deal. Together we walk downstairs and explain that we'd like to stay another night, same lady, same number. She explains it will cost $60 per night. This sent me over the edge because less than 5 minutes ago she told me $40. We begin to argue and I explain that first it was $30, then $40, and now $60? She tells me nobody in their right mind working here would let me stay the night for $30.
My fiancée looks her in the eyes with rage while the manager folds her arms with a sense of authority and power., and asks "Are you straight up calling us liars?" Again with the snide laughter. She responds. "Yeah."
I walked out of their, went to the EconoLodge which i paid less for each night, got better service, and didn't have to be stripped of pride in front of my fiancée.
Unfortunately, I made the mistake of booking a room for a week later. When I came in, they claimed they could not find my reservation. I had the odd feeling they were lying, so I went outside and called and spoke with the owner, claiming to be someone else verifying my reservation on my behalf. The owner found my reservation immediately. So I went inside and told the owner I just had 'someone' call to confirm my reservation for me and wanted to know why I was lied to when I came in before. He had the audacity to lie to me again and said he could not find my reservation.
I'm not sure what is wrong with these people. As odd as it may sound, I think this east Indian owned motel may be racist against anglos. I can't think of any other reason they would lie as they did. Their behaviour was extremely odd.
When I went outside to wait for my cab to take me to another hotel, I met a young anglo lady who encountered the same problem with the front desk. They claimed to not be able find her reservation. She told me they have done this to her on two other occasions and that she has finally given up on them.
The place needs a lot of work, a thorough cleaning, a fresh coat of paint and major updating throughout. Doesn't matter how old of a place it is, not keeping up with cleaning is not acceptable. For the cost per night ($100), unless you really really really have NO other options just keep looking, even if it means driving another 10, 20+ miles...
The microwave was small but looked serviceable. There was no coffee maker in the room but there was coffee in the lobby and since the rooms open to an interior hallway, it was easy to walk down the hall to get a cup if you wanted. As a woman traveling alone, I appreciated the fact that the door opened to an interior hall and the outer doors were locked at 10:30pm. Clearly, the owners are east Indian as there are bits of Indian decor here and there and a mild scent of incense in the lobby. I thought the decor was charming.
On the negative side, the door to my room was difficult to open with the key provided (yes, they old fashioned keys). It took quite a bit of jiggling to get the door open but after two nights I was just beginning to get the hang of it. There was no clock in the room. I usually use my phone as an alarm but I missed being able to see what time it was when I woke up in the middle of the night.
The huge plus was the price. I paid half what most rooms in the area would cost and $22 less per night than what I paid at the Econo Lodge a block away. I definitely would stay here again.
