Detailed Reviews
It’s a nice enough hotel but the rooms are so dark. They need to get rid of the tinted lampshades that make the rooms dark and that also applies to the bathroom. It’s difficult to put on makeup on when it’s so dimly lite. The lights should be facing down giving ample illumination not up. And as for a good nights sleep that’s hard when you’re sleeping on what seems like an extra firm mattress.

My daughter was recently married in Damascus, Oregon. When we first started looking for hotels in the area (within 10 miles), this place caught our eye.
We were familiar as we have lived in SE Portland for a quarter century, but we had never stayed nor dined at the Monarch.
My wife and I met with Karmen (Sales & Catering Coordinator) to discuss our needs. She showed us two sets of adjoining suites for the Brides group and the Grooms group the night before the weeding and set us up with a great rate for guest who called in to reserve rooms.
I'm not sure how other hotels handle room guarantees, but I liked how The Monarch is set up. It is by room night so if people come in a week early and reserve rooms for the wedding they 1) get the discount rate, and 2) the room counts against the total room nights int he contract. To give you an idea, we ended up with around 63 room nights for all the guests who called in and stayed multiple nights. We easily met our room obligation.
Another great aspect of The Monarch is its location. Easy access to the freeway. Around 15 minutes from the airport. Convenient to many restaurants and shops (Mall 205 across the street). Free parking.
The Monarch is also the one hotel to have a bar open until 2:30 am. This may not be important to you but our wedding party came back after the reception and kept the party going.
A great place to consider. They also have their own reception areas if you need additional services.

Enjoyed my staycation. Disappointed I was charged $65 to used the pool for an extra few hours but otherwise enjoyed the experience. I live locally and like to stay a few times a summer to enjoy the pool. Hotel was sold out but pool was empty! I wish they had a more established swimming package but this works too

Where to start... hospitality industry. This place needs a refresher on what that means. The staff was short and abrupt. Almost the most unprofessional display I've seen or experienced. (Even to the point of listening to an inappropriate conversation about customers and vendors on site. Disrespectful and just plain rude.) And honestly for the price point on almost everything, is overrated and over priced. Save your money and have a better experience elsewhere. The only good thing about this place is location, but you can fix that by sleeping in your car in the parking lot. They have been having a lot of car break ins also because of the clientele they let stay there. Motel 6 treats you and your belongings better!

Can't erase this star. Should be Zero. Not kid friendly. We arrived at 3:45pm. The hotel restaurant Fuego would not let the kids in the happy hour to eat, they would not open the restaurant to let the kids eat, they asked management if we could feed the kids at the two high tables at the entrance, Management said no. They said we could eat outside in the heat out front with an umbrella.
Second floor exiting the elevator smelled and still smells like a dirty diaper.
Here in the area for a family event. Did not feel that this facility cares for their patrons and customers.
Motel style vending machines charge $2.90 for a 12oz. can of soda, and $4.10 for an energy drink
Unfortunate, just wanted to pass this along to travelers.
Signed,

We booked an ADA room and had to walk up 3 steps to get to the elevator. The room smelled musty so we opened the window to get fresh air into the room. The bathroom was grimy. So gross! Toilet was stained. No microwave! Only 2 small paper cups for coffee. We had a 3 night stay. Next morning no water. Called to ask for some coffee. No way. We would have to pay for it. Couldn’t make coffee in the room as there was no water. Asked them to send up bottled water. Could t do that as front desk person said she was the only one there and couldn’t leave the desk. Seriously??? The only one in the entire building?? No staff to clean rooms? She claimed no staff. Got dressed and went to front desk to get water bottles. She gave me two but she was rather frosty. Asked if we would be penalized or would get a full refund if we moved to another hotel. She looked it up and said yes we could but would have to be out by 11. I had an appointment at 10am so we couldn’t do that. Honestly I would call this hotel “tired”. Beware and don’t waste your money! Go to Holiday Inn or Marriott.

I’ve stayed here many times with my company. The staff has always been extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean & modern. The hotel still has hot food available but with a limited menu for now. I was told 80% of the staff was let go because of the Coronavirus:(. It’s sad not to see familiar faces. I’m hoping when things improve that I will see these same familiar faces again welcoming me or serving me in the Restaurant or Bar again.

Although we did not dine on the site, I understand your restaurants are very popular. I was disappointed that the room cleaning service missed us on a couple of days, and the shower/tub was old and discolored. I also saw room service dirty dishes in the hallway longer than expected. Towels were not the best quality. I would think an overall updating of the decor would help. Room price was low but I would have paid more for a nicer hotel. I did appreciate the airport shuttle service offered.

Great hotel but why does it take a month for my deposit to be refunded to me ? I stayed 2 nights on the 25th and 26th May and my deposit will "automatically" refunded on 24th June. Why am i and other travellers giving your business interest free loans ?

The check-in process and the lobby area/bar/restaurant area was all good. Those areas were great to meet with other families to talk/eat. The rooms, however, are a different story. They are incredibly dated and have lots of areas that were sort of "band-aided" instead of making updates and/or repairs. The bathrooms were even more dated. The rooms were decently clean but that was about it. Given the modern and updated feel of the lobby/restaurant/bar, I was kind of shocked by the rooms. The workout room also needs to serious TLC. I think it's a guestroom that was turned into a fitness room. Dark, low ceilings, and dingy feeling. Not sure I'd book here in the future.

Dear April,
I am sorry, the Monarch is a pet-free hotel. The Comfort Inn in Clackamas, Holiday Inn Express in Gladstone and Best Western Rivershore in Oregon City accept pets and are within 10-15 minutes of our location.
Dear Connie -
All of the guest rooms were finished at the end of 2008 / top 2009 - so they all have the same décor and furnishings.
We updated our lobby and some aspects of the restaurant and lounge in 2012.
So you are aware, all of our rooms with two queen beds are on the outside perimeter of the hotel, facing either I-205 or Sunnybrook Road, which would be the only factor that I can really think if regarding desirability.
Best regards,
Tammy Thompson
Director of Sales
Joanne, all four of our ADA rooms face the front parking lot (not the freeway) so they are a bit more quiet than those facing the freeway.
Dear Sheila,
I am sorry we do not allow pets. We can offer kennel suggestions. If that is not an option I would try the Comfort Suites in Clackamas. They are about 5 minutes south of the Monarch.
Thank you for thinking of us!
