The George Hotel is a 17th Century townhouse enjoying a wonderful location nestling on the water’s edge between the castle and pier in the bustling harbour town of Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight. This magnificent building is steeped in history and was once home to the most noteworthy of the Island’s Governors, Sir Robert Holmes who often entertained King Charles II. Today the country house interior with its sweeping staircase, ancient panelling, uneven floors and stone flags is complemented by smart contemporary flourishes. The 17 bedrooms are individually designed, many with spectacular views of the Solent or the vibrant harbour.

The George hotel captivates guests with its pristine coastal location, contributing to the property's tranquil and relaxing ambiance. Many guests appreciate the hotel's clean and stylish rooms, exceptional food and drink options, and the added luxury of a serene garden and private beach. Despite its lively and charming atmosphere, a few travelers have noted a shift towards pretentiousness.
While some guests commend the friendly service, others have experienced service issues, such as responsiveness and housekeeping timing. Moreover, critiques of value have emerged due to perceptions of high prices and inconsistent service quality.

Detailed Reviews
Amateur staff and tired rooms letting down a fantastic location Obviously there is a need for training and investment. It was our 25th wedding anniversary and this was one of the hotels we had booked during a tour from Cornwall to IOW. Food was good here but the staff unprofessional. From handling limes for the G&T to placing the bread by hand in the basket next to the toaster at breakfast. Our room was not re-cleaned until after 1500 despite putting the sign on the door at 0900. Good job we were going out and not having a snooze. overall disappointing for a two night stay at £600 plus food

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding a stay with us. We sincerely apologise for the disappointment you experienced during what was meant to be a special celebration of your 25th wedding anniversary. We appreciate your compliments on the quality of our food; however, we regret that aspects of your experience did not meet your expectations. Our team works diligently to ensure a welcoming and enjoyable stay for all our guests. It is particularly disheartening to hear that you found our staff unprofessional, as we take pride in maintaining high service standards. Unfortunately, we were unaware of these concerns during your visit, and we certainly would have welcomed the opportunity to address them at the time, allowing us to improve your stay and enhance your experience. Regarding the issue with room servicing, we strive to prioritise guest comfort; we are sorry for any inconvenience this caused you. Depending on time of year we do strive to have all the rooms serviced by 1pm, however, sometimes this does take a little longer especially in our busy months May to end of September. We are happy to see your room was serviced for your stay even though the time may have been inconvenient for yourselves. Again, we appreciate you bringing these matters to our attention. We hope we can welcome you in the future. Kind Regards Team George!

Where do I start….had lunch in the restaurant NYE where the service was very slow, un attentive and had so many holes in the service. Then I asked if we could celebrate NYE at the bar and was told that unless I paid for the disco, I could buy a drink and go to my room as the music was for paying guests! We were residents that night. We went out to a more friendly place. When we were leaving to have dinner, the reception told us we could sit in the lounge area between 8-10 and then go to our room! No thank you I thought! We went out to dinner, bought wine from the restaurant as they were closing and went to our room like good children! I wasn’t allowed to sit at the bar and spend £120 as I would hear the music but could listen to the music in my room through the floor! Ridiculous! Next morning poor service in the restaurant again, cool poached eggs, blood pudding could be used as a deadly weapon, awful but it was included! Perhaps the management is poor or it’s off season. Wouldn’t bother to go back. I’m an Ex Pat who visits family all the time. Try the Seaview Hotel, much better.

First of all I must say that the student waiters (I assume they were students) were all charming and helpful.
Our nibbles came with our main course which was unusual.
I had a perfectly acceptable tinned tuna salad but it was not a Salad Niçoise. Perhaps that's why they called it a Niçoise Salad - no anchovies and no capers. Apparently that is the chef at The George's take. Perhaps they should tell the customer that.
Other than that it was lovely, sitting in the sun, watching the elite quaffing ridiculously large bottles of rosé. Showy Offy large. Shame really.

We had a great stay! The George is a small comfortable historic( King Charles II used to stay here) boutique hotel with a fantastic location right on the beach and great views directly across the solent in the middle of the pretty village of Yarmouth. Its restaurant serves excellent food and the wood panelled bar, with its open fire, has a robust wine & cocktails list. Some great fine wines. Our room overlooking the garden and sea was warm & simple, providing a really comfortable nights stay. The staff without exception were professional, friendly and couldn't have been more helpful.
I should mention the slow cooked shoulder of Lamb for two was excellent and frankly staying here feels like being part of a private house party!
Easy to get to as-well - the Lymington - Yarmouth ferry is only 50m away so easy to come as a foot passenger if preferred although we took a car to explore a little.
Even managed to take a picture of a Spitfire flying over the nearby Needles bathed in the Autumn sunshine!
Thankyou Team George for a lovely stay - albeit too short - we will be back!

We had an excellent stay at the George, taking up one of their january offers. Everything, from the room, to the lunch and the breakfast the next day was of a very high quality and good value for money, particularly given the offer which we took up. It was actually nice being in Yarmouth "out of season" as everything was so quiet and restful (notwithstanding a lot of businesses and attractions being shut in January)
Our room was fairly small (but that was as advertised!) but was perfectly fine for us.
The room was very well-equipped and furnished, so we found our stay very comfortable. We also very much enjoyed the Sunday lunch which we had as part of the offer and thought that it was very good value, given the quality and quantity of the food.
Finally, we were grateful to all of the staff for looking after us so kindly.
We definitely intend to visit the George again and look forward to doing so.

Lovely place and setting but the restaurant total service is absolutely horrendous.
Waited 25 minutes for any sort of drinks after order taken despite politely reminding them twice that we were waiting
Waitresses, lots of different ones come to take different parts of the order and therefore no continuity leading to some of our main courses arriving before the bread and starters ….
They seemed surprised when we sent them back.
Food just ok but main course had little flavour.
Overly expensive at £60 per head for 4 adults and 2 children - not recommend unless they sort their service and kitchens out.

We have just spent a joyful three nights in this excellent hotel right on the water front at Yarmouth.
The room was comfortable and beautifully decorated with a view over the Solent.
Breakfasts were delicious with a great selection of hot and continental choices. Food is cooked for you on order (not a buffet kept hot lamps).
We ate in the restaurant twice in the evening. Wonderful fish of the day (whole sea bass) which was the best. Great puddings and wine list.
Particularly outstanding is the care and attention from the team of staff. Friendly attentive and customer focused.
If you enjoy small traditional comfortable hotels, with great food and friendly staff this is a fabulous place for an out of season break.
Highly recommended.

wasn't a problem.Stopped here for lunch on a beautiful sunny afternoon. We were seated outside with a lovely view over the water. Our waitress (Sian D) was excellent and very attentive. Our two dogs were made welcome and given a big bowl of drinking water. Drinks and food were very good (Courgette risotto, mussels and Tiger prawn linguini). A little on the expensive side but when you consider the location, view, service and quality of food/drinks this wasn't an issue.

This is a small traditional hotel sympathetically updated. There is no elevator and our rooms on the second floor had creaking floors and sloping ceilings and the shower room was compact.
The hotel is situated right next to the ferry terminal and the restaurant garden overlooks the Solent. We were blessed with beautiful weather and enjoyed two lunches in the garden on the waterfront. The menu is varied and we found the service was very good although the kitchen did not cope well with tweaks or variation requests. The food was tasty and well presented.
The hotel reception staff were pleasant and helpful.

We booked a two night stay in room 15 (the bridal suite) for my wedding. The room itself was large with a good sized bathroom and spacious balcony overlooking the Solent.
The staff were seamless throughout our stay, dinner service slow and pricey (£150 for two lobsters) but if you are aware of this and accept it for what it is then there’s no surprises.
If you’re staying here to have an early night, there is loud music from both the hotel garden and pub in the square which ends at midnight.
We live on the island so wouldn’t stay again but will certainly return for food, especially at Christmas - the festive decor is wonderful!

Back up to level 5 for hygiene, but how long will it stay here? It yo-yos up and down with each inspection.
Wasting you time trolling posts the were put in place long before social distancing was even mentioned. Yours? Disgusting behaviour. I wonder what you re doing to fight COVID-19, nothing I suspect :-)
It has finally got to a respectable 4 after many years at zero and 1. I hope this can be maintained or even improved to 5.
Our room the bed was very big but not sure if it was a king size bed or not. But you can always email the hotel & ask which rooms have a king size bed before you do your booking. Enjoy your stay at The George.
