We ate in the restaurant for one of the nights and the meal was very good, it was hot when served and arrived quickly. The staff were very friendly and helpful, breakfast consisted of a small buffet for cereals, toast and drinks and waitress service from the kitchen for cooked items.
This is a lovely old coach house with huge amounts of character and personality. It cost less than staying in the Holiday Inn Express (which we stayed in on our last trip to Southampton) and it felt like a holiday rather than a business trip. I would be more than happy to spend a romantic weekend here. There is a large car park at the rear which is free for guests. Stay here, eat well, sleep soundly and explore the area. Southampton and Portsmouth are within easy reach.
Another thing to mention is that the hotel is in the middle of a bustling little town with the usual shops and some good places for coffee. Opposite is a fantastic little bakery that provided the rolls and cakes for the journey home and we were spoilt for choice from the sweet and savoury items on show.
First the positives
Beds comfy and room big enough we were in a family room.
Bathroom fine good size bath and shower in it
Plenty of hand sanitizer around hotel and in restaurant/bar.
You had to book time for breakfast and social distancing was kept to.
Cooked breakfast tasty but a few things let it down for the price now you pay extra for. Firstly all weekend you only had a choice of white bread for toast. Only had strawbe over the 3 breakfast we had and my daughter asked for a muffin for breakfast given a mini one not value for money.
Other negative things was our room was directly above the bar and on main room so we were disturbed Saturday evening when people were leaving the bar and at 5:45 Monday morning by a van either delivering stuff or emptying bins. Why put people with children above the bar when clearly there could be disturbed
Also tea and coffee tray not refilled daily.
Finally on Sunday evening I found a mobile phone behind the bedside cabinet when I knocked my watch off it and I moved it abit. I took it to reception the lady guest which room I was from because housekeeping had been looking for it as it belonged to the last guest. This gets me thinking considering my room had been cleaned 3 times once before I arrived and twice while I was there how good a clean was done considering Covid and deep cleans should be beening done it clearly hasn't or the phone would have been found especially when the previous guest had informed them they had lost their phone because I had only moved the cabinet less than cm and I saw it.
All those few things let my stay down, which is a shame because I enjoyed the last time I stayed
I ordered soup to start but upon its arrival my wife noticed mold on the bread. This they replaced.
When I got my main of battered fish & chips it seemed fine but then, whilst eating the fish, I found a great big long chunk of gristle in the fish. This put me right off it.
Fair play they took that off the bill.
When we went to reception and had to pay for the room they tried to charge more but I had proof of the proper price so I just paid that.
When we got to the room, room 16, we found that the double room was in fact a mini double. This room had only a 5' bed that one side of it is against the wall. This means that if you do have a partner sleeping with you that person by the wall will have to climb over you if needed to get out during the night.
Fair enough when we asked to move to another room this they did, as long as we paid an extra ÂŁ10. Upon inspection of the second room, The Hamley Room No 63, aqwe found that this was much more like what we had been expecting.
After this really things were ok. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was clean.
The staff were polite and helpful
So as I said bad start but got better in the end.
Plenty of parking round the back
Rooms fine - perhaps a little dated and tired but comfortable, shower worked and had a comfortable bed
My one negative piece of feedback is that music directly below room i was in went on far too long and was far too loud, and at 7 the next morning, same again - so..my suggestion is to management put music on and go to the rooms and see how intrusive it can be if you are trying to sleep
Service friendly. Breakfast freshly cooked and more than adequate
The negative parts: the room was very tired and needed a full upgrade. The lighting was appalling my daughter had a really hard time trying to do her make up for our night out. We decided to re-use our towels so hung them up and when we came back they'd been folded and replaced on towel rack... we had no idea who's towel was which (sorry I'm not into towel sharing :( )
Our room was above the bar and at 7.30am all you could hear was the staff and the TV music underneath.
Breakfast... the 1st morning was dreadful, the staff were unfriendly to the point of being rude. No OJ, no glasses, no veggie sausages, rock hard poached eggs, cold soggy mushrooms and raw tomato.
The second day was a different story all together, 2 different members of staff one younger girl who was lovely and an older lady both were very friendly and professional. Third female was as unfriendly as she'd been the previous day.
Overall we found the bar staff unfriendly with a slow can't be bothered attitude.
Positives... my check in was easy and a problem I had with my room was quickly and professionally handled.
The bar area is lovely for a pre or post meal drink ( after breakfast experience we choose not to eat in the restaurant).
It is ideally located in the town centre a 10 min walk from train station. 2 mins from coach and bus station. There is also lots of hotel parking.
There are a number or local restaurants and bars ( we would highly recommend Cams Mill).
It is good value for money.
I would suggest if you book ask to be in the separate building not the main hotel as it would be a lot quieter and looks more modern.
The staff are very professional and most of all very friendly.
Thank you all at the Red Lion.
Check in/out was speedy, just make sure you enter your car details at reception when you arrive.
Location is great very close to the town with plenty of bars and restaurants nearby.
Breakfast was excellent, great choice and the staff are friendly and go that extra mile to make sure you have a great start to the day.
"Handy for Fareham obviously, but also not too far from several attractions in the area, including Portsmouth. Good road network. "Read full review
