Detailed Reviews
Had a midweek (buyagift experience days) “gourmet” break in the Greenhill hotel in July 2019. Hotel is very comfortable and location/décor great, some parts of it are quite old but the owners are doing a good job of keeping it tidy and comfortable. The hotel is set back well away from a busy road so it’s easy to find but traffic can’t be heard from the room. The rooms and communal areas are kept very clean/tidy. All the staff were very friendly and I have to congratulate the owner on appointing these people since they are a real credit to the place and it really made a difference to us, we’ve travelled a lot and these guys are up there with the most friendly/helpful staff we have ever encountered. Breakfast was good and wholesome with plenty of choice and as with other meals the portions are very generous. Evening meals were very good and dining room décor is very pleasant, again portions very generous (we couldn't finish the sirloin steak and gammon they were so big) so take your expanding trousers etc. We used this as a base to visit the northern part of the Lake District and it was perfect for our needs. Overall a great alternative to some of the overpriced accommodation that is found in the more touristy areas of the Lake District national park.

I've eaten many times at Greenhill as I used to live down the road. Have always wanted to stay so on a visit to see family, we did just that. I think for the price, it is a bargain. We were dubious as this was our first stay away from home since Covid and have been shielding as well. There was no need to worry. We felt safe from the moment we arrived until we left. The measures in place were excellent and adhered to. All staff wore masks at all times and there was hand sanitiser at every turn! The rooms were really clean and comfortable. The bed was probably one of the most comfortable we have had in a hotel. We had an evening meal which was delicious and we enjoyed sitting outside with a drink. Breakfast was equally yummy. As one young waitress said to every request, 'no problem', and it really wasn't. We were so impressed that we have booked to stay again later in the year. Fingers crossed Covid allows it! I would highly recommend this place both to stay and to eat. Well done Greenhill.

Stayed for 2 nights. Friendly, pleasant staff . The hotel is comfortable though looks a bit shabby in places in general could do a bit tlc and refurbishment. Our room was comfortable although I don't think it had been cleaned to a very high standard especially in light of covid guidelines. Cobwebs around the window and cake under the bed obviously hadn't been vacuumed. There was no assurance of covid guidelines being followed other hotels have stripped out things like multi use toiletries and tea making facilities have cleared and sealed remote controls. I had taken my own spray disinfectant so cleaned the surfaces in the room . On a plus the food was excellent good portions well presented and hot.

Good afternoon, Many thanks for your review. We are really disappointed to read this, as we are taking precautions very seriously and feel this could give a false impression. The hotel is fully cleaned and sanitized every morning and night and rooms are cleaned thoroughly and to a very high standard every morning. We also have hand sanitizer around the hotel to ensure your safety. The tea and coffee making facilities and toiletries are changed after you check out and although the remote control does not have a plastic seal on it, it is sanitized every morning. We have barriers in place to ensure a 2 metre distance at reception and all of our staff and guests have to wear masks around the hotel. This is really disappointing to read, as a small business we are doing everything we can to keep everyone safe. Comments like this can be really damaging, especially in the current climate. It would have been more beneficial if you had mentioned this when you were here. We did have plans for refurbishment, however, these were put on hold due to the pandemic. I'm sure you can understand that these have been extremely worrying times and we are just trying to get back on our feet. We can assure you that we are taking this very seriously and if you had mentioned this at the time, we would have rectified this. Kind regards, Liv Jackson Reception

We enjoyed our stay at the Greenhill Hotel. We received a Buy A Gift voucher as a gift so decided to adventure up the country to use it. The hotel looked amazing on the website, however was slightly disappointed when we first saw our room. In real life the room looked a lot more dated.
Our room on the website was advertised as a twin room so was obvious they had just pushed the beds together. I feel we got the short straw of this because we were paying with a voucher as when I originally made the booking I was told they had many rooms available. Despite this the bed was still comfortable and we both had a good night sleep both nights.
The bathroom was okay, but the shower was so small trying to get in and out of it wasn't very comfortable. As seen on other reviews we had to push the flush button about 3/4 times before the toilet would flush.
We ate in the restaurant both nights we were there. The food was absolutely amazing, we loved our meal both nights. The first night we had to make our booking quite late due to many restaurant bookings for people who were not staying in the hotel. This also meant that we had to wait a while for our food, it doesn't seem that they can keep up with the demand.
Our second night we waited over an hour to even receive our starters, I am quite sure the server forgot to put our order through. The table next to us received their food before us despite sitting down after us and an hour after waiting for our starters I was told what I had ordered had ran out.
I understand these things happen but if it had been acknowledged and our server apologised for it I wouldn't of understood but we didn't receive any type of apology.
He had a sense of making me feel as if he was doing me a favour while serving us, wasn't the best dining experience. Luckily the food made up for it.
The rest of the staff we were around were lovely and friendly.
We would definitely come back, but we were definitely expecting better things.

We’re just back from our stay at Greenhill Hotel, which should have been for 2 nights but decided to come home after 1 due to the state of the bedrooms.
We used the excuse of our dog not being well and didn’t raise with the hotel at the time of leaving as on arrival yesterday, we were initially given Room 11 which overlooks a generator making constant noise. We asked to be moved and were given 2 keys to choose what room we’d like. Both rooms were as outdated as each other but we agreed on room 12 which was at the front of the hotel so didn’t have the constant drone from the generator.
No sooner had we got relaxed in our room which honestly is so outdated it felt like stepping back in time, we then realised the bathroom has a sani-flow system so using the toilet, shower or tap means you have a constant whirring-grumbling pump noise that I think would wake the whole hotel.
We had planned on some walking today but the thought of coming back to that room and a shower that you have to run around in to get wet was not appealing so decided we’d prefer to be in our own house relaxing.
Really disappointing as we’ve stayed in some lovely country manor houses which have been kept up to an amazing standard and this one just completely fails and needs some major investment to show the true quality of a Georgian House.

Good afternoon, We are really disappointed to read this review. We have recently taken over the hotel and have invested in the rooms already. We usually do not allow dogs into the newly refurbished rooms, however we would have made an exception if you had let us know what you were unhappy with. We are disappointed to see these comments as we have had lots of very positive feedback lately. If you had spoken to us we would have done our best to find you a room more to your taste although as this is a Georgian Hotel we like to keep the decor in keeping which we feel adds to the charm. Our staff would always go out of their way to make sure that you were happy, but need to be told if there is a problem,. If you look on our website you will see that we have a very good selection of rooms which we believe have been tastefully decorated. Regards Kaye Jackson Proprietor

My husband and I have just returned from another great stay at this super friendly hotel. The owners and the staff have to be some of the best in the business. In these difficult times everything that can be done to assure the safety of visitors is being done. Tables are at regulation distance, sanitizer everywhere and staff take you to your table then table service only is adhered to. The food is amazing, we had lunch with relatives after arriving then had evening meal the next day. Both were superb. Breakfast, I had ham and poached eggs, Oh my word gorgeous, husband had full English, yummy. Seeing the room numbers on the web is good as you can ring and book which one you want. Great views from rooms. All that's left to say is thank you all again for a great stay. .

Four of us went for Sunday lunch. We chose this place as it was dog friendly. The restaurant was good with plenty of space and we were given a corner table which was very suitable for dogs.
The service was pretty good and the waits between courses were not long. The soup was bland with little taste. We all had the roast beef which was plentiful but awful quality. Normally having roast beef in a restaurant means that is carved off a large joint. this beef was not like that. It had been cooked to an inch of it's life. This was such a shame. I don't think we will be going again.

Good evening, Many thanks for your comments. I am disappointed to hear that you were not satisfied with your food, as nothing was mentioned on the day. Our Sunday roasts are very popular and I am very sorry to hear that you did not seem to have the same experience. However, had this been mentioned at the time we would have rectified this straight away. We are rather disheartened by this as a family business trying to get back on our feet after a very difficult few months, we are putting so much effort into ensuring the safety of both customers and staff. We would have found it more beneficial if you had mentioned this on the day. Kind regards, Liv Jackson Reception

Arrived at hotel to stay for a Christmas party we were attending there . The hotel was beautiful decorated for the festive season. The young man on reception was very welcoming and polite , my room was spacious, clean and tastefully decorated. The bathroom was tiny ,but adequate for my needs. The function room is a great size , modern and a layout excellent for a party/wedding . We were greeted with canapes and bucks fizz, I must have been asked 5 times if I had wanted more canapes, so this was brilliant knowing that nobody was being left out and the hotel were ensuring people had plenty, the bar staff and serving staff never stopped, they too were very polite. We were having a 2 course meal . All the food was fresh and hot, a very good meal considering the amount of guests they had to cater for. Very impressive. The entertainment/singer was good too. We had breakfast made to order , it was delicious .Infact nothing could have been better ..... or so I thought. I had paid for my hotel room a month previously but had forgotten. The lovely young man who I met upon my arrival rang me at home to offer me a refund as I had paid again for my room upon checkout . I was impressed by this honesty and efficiency of the hotel as I would never had known . All in all the experience was perfect.

We stayed overnight in this very grand old house on our way north. The hotel is full of charm and original features and has been furnished in keeping with its age. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was good. We had a very relaxing evening meal in the bar (we were offered the choice of eating in the bar or the restaurant) and a very good breakfast the following morning.

With the need for social distancing, Greenhill has a great advantage as the restaurant and dining areas are large, so different parties can be seated comfortably and spaciously. This is why we chose it.
I last ate here a few years ago and was pleasantly surprised to find that the menu had a good range of choices, including veggie and vegan options (even vegan ice cream, which I recommend!).
It is pricey but not more so than a lot of decent pub meals, and we used the Eat Out to Help Out scheme. Clean, comfortable, easy close parking and great service. Lots of positives and would go again.
