I wanted to share my appreciation for the staff here at this Secrets Resort. Especially Oscar, who went above and beyond anything we have experienced in the past. We have stayed at multiple Resorts including another secrets. This was the best experience we've ever had on vacation. And we owe it all to Oscar.

The resort itself was beautiful and the staff were great, but I had to dock a few stars due to some surprisingly unsustainable practices that I found deeply upsetting: 1) Plastic, plastic, and more plastic! The resort is located on Akumal Beach, which is a beautiful home and sanctuary to a variety of sea turtles and other marine life that I enjoyed snorkeling with every day. Plastic waste is a HUGE problem for our oceans and marine life, but the resort didn’t seem to care at all. The only water option outside of seated restaurants were plastic water bottles, which they doled put en MASSE all day. Even if you asked for a reusable water bottle to be filled, they’d simply dump water from a plastic bottle into it. I know COVID makes it difficult to offer filtered water stations, but I’ve been to other resorts where they offer water in paper bottles or aluminum bottles that are sanitized and refilled daily. And beyond the plastic water bottles, they also used plastic straws in many, many drinks, often without even being requested. I found this particularly sad given that their beach is known for sea turtles, which can suffer and even die when they encounter plastic straws in their natural environments. I sincerely hope they switch to paper straws in the near future to protect the turtles that make this area so special!! (When I mentioned this to a staff member he said they used plastic straws due to COVID… which makes no sense since paper straws serve the same purpose...) 2) Harm to the coral reef: in addition to sea turtles, what makes this resort incredibly special is the fact that there is a vibrant coral reef directly in front of it. Unfortunately, the resort doesn’t seem to care about this natural wonder since they make virtually no effort to protect it against harmful chemicals found in sunscreens. Though there is one sign on the beach that says “safe the reef” with an X through a sunscreen bottle, they offer NO guidance to guests about which types of sunscreens/ chemicals harm the reef. I saw tons of guests using sprays and lotions with Oxybenzone and Octinoxate which I’m sure they had no idea were actively destroying the reef that they were snorkeling around— a simple reminder at check-in or via email would go a LONG way! And to add insult to injury, the resort actually provides bottles of sunscreen in the rooms that contain these two ingredients!!! Though I appreciated the gesture, there are plenty of sunscreens (mineral and chemical!) that are reef safe and I hope they switch to one of those soon. Again, the grounds and facilities were stunning and the staff were wonderful (and I’m sure most have no say in these unsustainable corporate practices!) but it was hard to enjoy such a beautiful location knowing that it was being slowly destroyed by the resort. I truly hope that AM resorts gets with the program in terms of sustainability and becomes a better steward of the beautiful land Secrets Akumal occupies, but until then we will find other resorts (of which there are many!!) that take these issues seriously.

We just loved it. Snorkeling from the beach. Reserve a bali bed. The service is just amazing. We wanted for nothing. Recommend highly the Romance master suite with soaking pool on balcony and secret cabinet where your room service or morning coffee and rolls are left without having to answer the door! Jonah at the pool and Claudio, private concierge, were high points within a first class service team!

My husband and I made a trip to Secrets Akumal for our sixth anniversary. We booked a Preferred Club Swim Out room, hoping for that "exclusive" special feeling. Reviews looked great, so what could go wrong? Unfortunately, many things. Our "preferred club" check-in was in a nice building, but within five minutes of arriving and sitting down with a nice drink, we were approached by a high-pressure salesperson pitching a breakfast to discuss their vacation club. She was nice enough, but pretended not to hear when we told her we preferred not to attend the breakfast. She kept asking us which of the "free gifts" we would like - $300 in spa credit or a free romantic dinner. Then proceeded to try to get us to sign a document saying we would show up for the breakfast. I told her no, and she just wouldn't let up. I didn't sign anything, but still ended up telling her we'd think about coming just to get her to leave us alone. Part of this also included a coupon book of $10 off bottles of wine, $30 off spa services, and $40 off a romantic dinner. Turns out, these coupons aren't worth anything (at least at the spa where we tried them - they said the coupons were off of the much higher sticker price, and we already had the "best price"). We ended up opting out of the breakfast (thankfully). We heard from others around the resort that it was an incredibly high-pressure situation. One couple explained to us that they had signed on for the vacation club for an ASTRONOMICAL cost, including a massive downpayment, for a 50-year contract + 50 additional years. They were super nice and very excited about it, but I couldn't get over the sticker shock they were talking about. Side note - read the tripadvisor and other reviews about that vacation club before you go to that meeting if you decide to opt in for the (possibly scammy) $300 spa credit. Aside from that massive flaw, the whole vacation was like a "death by one thousand cuts" of small inconveniences. There are three pools, but only one with a swim-up bar and all the entertainment, but the chairs around that pool are all "claimed" with towels by 7:00AM. I kid you not - before most of the restaurants open for breakfast, all the chairs around the two main pools were claimed. I even watched a girl get up from her breakfast at the poolside restaurant to "defend" her claimed chairs when a couple tried to remove the towels. It was NUTS. The third pool was much calmer, and everyone basically made fun of that pool as boring. Just weird. The whole resort seemed woefully unprepared for the number of vacationers. Every night there were 45+ minute waits at every one of the restaurants (and their use of the little beeper things to hold your spot in line was really questionable - I had to go up and check on it multiple times). We stayed five days and tried to book the Hibachi restaurant on our first day and it was booked out until we were gone! That and the romantic dinner are the only places you can make reservations. Speaking of reservations...we set up a few with our concierge on our first day. We wanted to do two couples' massages and one romantic dinner on our last night (Friday). Our concierge couldn't get us a spa appointment until 6:00PM on our second day, which is a weird time to have a spa appointment, but it is what it is. We were told we had the romantic dinner reserved for 7:30. Turns out it was 7:30 on Thursday, not the Friday night we had requested. When we showed up a day late for our reservation, they said they wouldn't be able to accommodate us. We were very upset because it was 7:30 and by then all the restaurants were going to have 60+ minute wait times. They ended up "working us in" to the Italian restaurant by sitting us outside in 90 degree, 100% humidity. Let me tell you - eating hot fettucini when it's 90 degrees and you're dressed in the "casual elegance" dress code they require, it's MISERABLE. There were some pros for the trip - the resort is gorgeous, the entertainment staff were quite fun (shout out to Benji for his AquaStrong class), and the bartenders are super nice (despite being woefully understaffed for the number of patrons). Our room was great, and we really loved the swim out. There are leaves and stuff in it from the tropical surroundings, but that didn't bother us as much as some other reveiws I've read. One last aside - calling your swim up bar "The Manatee Bar" is a bit...rude? But maybe I'm being sensitive.

My husband and I spent a week at Secrets Akumal this past week, and absolutely loved it! We stayed at the Preferred Club Ocean View Jr. Suite and loved our room so much! We loved the tropical "jungley" feel of the property - the foliage was just beautiful. The gardeners and grounds keepers do an amazing job with keeping everything lush and green The staff at the Preferred Club Lounge were always so helpful - Marina and Sharon - favorites! Argenis, Norman, Claudia, Concepcion - they were always around and available and checking in with us to make sure that our stay was perfect. The pools were beautifully maintained and always sparkly clear - so inviting. Beaches - even though there was some sea grass washing up, the Secrets beach team did an amazing job at keeping up with it so we had a clear beach - so appreciated. Entertainment was fun and every night had something to delight us. Food - Can't say enough about the food at this resort - 5*. Our first dinner was super special at Portofino and our server was Jose, and he made that dinner not only a dinner but a dining experience! Each course was perfectly executed for our enjoyment. The other restaurants were also delicious! El Patio, Bourdeaux, Sea [The only thing I would suggest is at Oceana, where it would be nice for at least one entre on the menu to not be seafood (for those who have a seafood lover spouse, but the other not) - maybe a chicken dish?] We were also there with a group and I cannot commend the groups and events team more for their outstanding and over-the-top spoiling of our group!! We had a private cabana by the pool, private dinner poolside with amazing entertainment in and around the pool - food ... SOOOOO good!!!; The culinary team outdid themselves with our Fairwell Reception with the food and desserts - works of art! If you have an event or group, this resort cannot be beat!! TURTLES! We swam with the turtles several times while we were there and there is a coral reef just off short that is beautiful and had some pretty cool fish too - I saw grouper, trumpet fish, some angels and of course ... sea turtles :)
