such a special venue , that truly needs to be experienced …and the BEST thing , is the night with an incredibly unique LIGHT SHOW and historical inspiration about the mayan background of mexico… !!!! my eyes were stimulated By SO MANY BEAUTIFUL VISUALS….. it kept me keen to stay and watch the show The food was great too!!!! and the live music was a great bonus
Arrival/check-in: we booked through Tui and done the online check-in on the website 5 days prior to coming. We managed to book the restaurants on the app before coming - we had 7 visits. Would recommend doing this before you come as we enquired about changing an existing booking and the were full for our last week. Arrival was quick and easy and bell boys take you and luggage on the cart to your room. Rooms- we booked a junior suite with Tui. We got the old style room. They managed to change us on day 3 as the hotel was full. We got a superior room in Villa 3 - amazing location 🤩. The cost was meant to be $10 per person per night but we didn’t have to pay. Got a helpful manager called Fernando who was great! We are a party of 4, 2 adults and 2 kids; 15 & 12. We had 2 doubles and a double sofa. I would book a suite if returning. There was plenty of storage space for clothes and 4 cases. The toilet is weird and quite see-through so we avoided that area if someone was in. I didn’t think the shower was as see through as others have said; this wasn’t an issue for us. If you are short of towels or have any issues with your room. Dial 8585 to concierge and they will sort it your issue. We left 50 pesos in the safe every few days with a note for beer, coke, Fanta and crisps. These were left every day even when we didn’t leave note or tip! Cleaners were in every day. Pool areas - plenty of sun beds, no need to get up early unless you require one with shade as these are very limited at the main pool. The kids pool has lots of shade and lots of beds. We spent time at all the pools, including the Coba one a couple of days which is really good. The quiet pool is lovely, good music and a chilled vibe. There are Bali beds but I think they are hard to get. We managed to get one on an afternoon as someone left - they are amazing! The main pool has a lot going on; water polo every day, aerobics classes etc. the swim up bar is a plus. Restaurants- the main buffet has so much choice; we only ate in there for dinner 3/4 times but the options are amazing. The Mexican section is so good!! They have a grill area, seafood area with prawns, scallops, salmon etc and they will cook it fresh for you. Pasta area were you choose your ingredients and they cook it fresh (I had this twice and it was great - sometimes a wait but worth it). So much choice for breakfast and lunch too. The waiters serve you drinks to your table. For lunch options, there is also the food trick and main pool bbq area. The food truck does get busy at peak times but it’s great, I had the help yourself nachos most days! The bbq at the main pool is great too. Coba pool food area is a lot better in my opinion. It’s a small buffet but at the pool area, with salads, wraps, fresh pizza, burgers etc. Dinners; we ate at Thali (Indian) - very good. We had the sample dish which was tasters of a lot of the options on the menu. It’s a lovely restaurant with great staff. Tequila (Mexican). Although this is a buffet, it’s very good. The theming is amazing, we got to wear the sombreros for photos. Don Pablo - absolutely loved this place, my favourite of them all. We had a large table for 8 as we went with friends. The water, Filiberto was brilliant. We all had the filet steak but he brought extra prawn dishes, fries and rice for the table. There was so much food but excellent quality. We had Mayan coffe afterwards. Le Gourmet- similar to Don Pablo - amazing food, we all had steak there too. Although these are fine dining, don’t be put off if you have kids. There is a kids menu in each restaurant but it’s not that great. We used the opportunity to try new things, such as lobster Thermidor and fois gras. The restaurants are not pretentious at all and we were made to feel welcome. La Gran Tortuga - rodizio restaurant. I was most looking forward to this but this was my least favourite of all 7. The quality of the meat was not the same as the other restaurants and the atmosphere was a bit meh! Others in my party did thoroughly enjoy their food though, so this is just my opinion. Mikado Tepanyaki- this was very good. The ordering was a bit rushed and we had to initially ask a few times for more wine, but the service then picked up. The live cooking is interactive and the food was delicious. Mashua was our last meal last night. It’s Japanese and Peruvian fusion. The menu is a bit out there but we all tried new things; octopus and ceviche. It’s not to everyone’s taste (including mine) but love to try new things. The soup and main dishes were amazing though. You can order steak, prawn and chicken either grilled or in the wok. The restaurant is lovely and we had a fab waiter called Cristian who took a lot of time to explain what each thing in the menu was. I’m glad we tried this as it’s somewhere we wouldn’t visit back home. Sun- it’s very hot!! Bring lots of sun cream and tops for the kids. Remember a hat too! Beach- some days there was a lot of seaweed but the guys are there all day every day clearing it. Bits of Tulum beach are rocky but just walk along a bit towards La Gran Tortuga entrance and it’s more Sandy. The Coba beach is much better, hardly any seaweed or rocks- it’s only about 10 mins along. Excursions - we booked Xel-ha and Xcaret direct and made our own way they’d and back via a taxi. It was quite expensive but still worked out cheaper than adding on the transport option; plus you have the benefit of going and coming back when it suits you rather than a schedule. These parks are amazing. Water shoes are essential. We also done the snorkelling, zip wires and 4x4 quad biking. We booked this through Destino Riviera. I would highly recommend this trip. Note though; the zip wire is 100 feet high ams 1 km long. Totally took me out of my comfort zone but loved it! We also booked our airport transfers with Destino riviera too. We went into play del Carmen 2 nights using taxi and collectivo. The collectivo is great but you do have a bit of a walk to get to 5th Avenue, about 20/25 mins. 5th Avenue had great shops and is very lively at night. We were with the kids so didn’t go into any of the places. We had a meal one night and street food the other; both were great! Staff- the stafff at this hotel are brilliant. We haven’t met a ride or unhelpful person in 2 weeks. They honestly can’t do enough for you; with or without tips. We did tip throughout the holiday, usually 20 or 50 pesos at the bars or for services and 200 for evening meals. This is obviously different for everyone. I hope this has been helpful. I need to get back to pack 4 cases 😩😬😭…
This was an absolute dream vacation. We booked through Air Canada vacations, so our transportation to the hotel was waiting for us as soon as we arrived at the airport. It would have been nice to know which company it was picking us up, but it was easy to find out and we were sitting poolside 5 hours after landing. This resort has absolutely everything. The kids had lots of fun with the kids/teens club and the optional shows and all the staff are amazing. They remembered our names and were constantly friendly and helpful. The dolphinarium is amazing and the pools are lush to make up for the red-flagged beach. We were minutes from Xhel Ha and Tulum, which we took advantage of with Xcaret tours. The hacienda next door is lively and fun and such a great place to browse around. We are so sad to leave tomorrow and are not ready to say goodbye yet. …
Summary: overall a great resort with good food, nice staff, and great entertainment. Beach was a bit disappointing with limited options for open swimming in the sea. Stayed March 9-16, 2023. Our first time at this resort. Family of 4 - my wife and I + 2 kids ages 13 and 10. Room Booked Junior Suite in Nov. Asked about upgrade at check in. Cost would be extra $280 US for renovated room ($40/night). We looked at both rooms and decided to stick with basic. Preferred the traditional decor. Room was same size with 2 double beds together, sitting area, and single bed/couch. Slight musty smell before we aired it out. Bathroom layout was traditional 3 piece with bath/shower combo. In the modern room the shower and sink were outside the toilet room which some may prefer. Our room was 33306. Ground floor and convenient location. Storage was adequate. Big umbrella and iron/board in closet. Food Buffet - good. Yes, most days selection is the same but when you always have 40+ things to choose from how can you complain? My wife has Celiac Disease and had fairly good options aside from dessert. If you have a food allergy, make sure to get a card indicating this at check-in and always keep with you to show it to chefs to make sure different foods are safe for you. A la Carte's - very good. We managed to book them through the app a few days before arrival. Highly recommend that. Don Pablo was out favourite as it was the only one we went to with true a la carte experience for all courses. Gran Tortuga - best meats! Rotisserie grilled and brought to your table on sords + grilled veggies and pineapple. Buffet appetizers and desserts. Good caipirinhas. Tequila - Mexican buffet. Good food, social atmosphere. Makadu Tapanyaki - show was good but if there are no Tapanyaki spots you aren't missing too much. Sushi/sashimi very good. Miso soup OK. Drinks Wine- Same house red and white included at all buffets/restaurants. The red was decent, white not as good. Tasted like a bland sauvignon blanc. There is a wine list you can buy bottles from $26-$50 US. We never did. Beer - Dos Equis XX lager and red on tap. Decent but never very cold. Can buy other bottles (eg Sol for $2). You won't find IPA's! Cocktails - some inconsistency and no top shelf liquors unless you pay. Mojito's were most consistently good. The bar in the covered sitting area behind lobby close to main pool was the best. Kids Pina colada in a pineapple by main pool for $5 was excellent. Pools - no complaints. Main pool and kids areas tend to be most happening. Quiet pool nice to chill at. Not supposed to leave your towels to reserve loungers/beds but people still do. That said, you'll usually find free loungers except for 10:30-4 by main pool. Beach - A bit disappointing. If you have been to Cuba or Bahamas, don't expect it to be comparable. Our family loves to swim in the sea/ocean and we were limited in this respect. Beach is fairly narrow and most of the Tulum/Coba Beach has rocks for the first 20 meters or so. Rocks aren't sharp though. Lots of seaweed washing up on shore which staff are constantly cleaning. I guess it's atypical to have so much this time of year. Usually comes May-Aug. Most annoying thing was that aside from some smaller swimming enclosures along Beach, red flags were usually up so they didn't want you swimming in other open areas of the sea. Combination of windy days and lifeguard shortages I think. We discovered it's best to swim in the public area just off BGP property on the Tequila Restaurant side. Lifeguards did not blow their whistles if you swam out as it's off property. Also fewer rocks there. Staff - overall friendly and helpful. Their English is pretty good. Alejandro in lobby was particularly helpful. Did a bike tour with Axel from entertainment staff on second day and he was always great when we talked to him afterwards. Grounds: very nice with lots of wildlife - birds, iguanas, capybaras, coatimundis. Entertainment - we saw Magic Show (free and very good), 80's night (free and fun with good singers/dancers) and Origen ($10-20/adult, 5-10/kid). Annoying to pay extra but it was excellent. Excursions - we did 1 paid excursion - snorkeling with sea turtles in Akumal + guided walk/swim through underground cave Cenotes. About $102/adult once you add the park fees. Fun to swim with the sea turtles but a bit congested with people and sea water murky. Cenote part was excellent. We also took the Collectivo public transit to Cenote Azul ($3/person each way + $10/person entry). Only 15 mins to get there and we had a lot of fun jumping off rock into cenote and sitting in some of the smaller cenotes and letting small fish nibble our feet. If it was more crowded would have taken away from experience so I recommend the morning. Plenty of other cenotes to explore in the area. Search the net and find ones close to highway so you can cheaply get there with Collectivo. Need guide for any underground ones. Other things: I'm a runner. Since BGP resort complex is so big, I was able to do loops around Tulum/Coba/Akumal without any highway running even for my 20k run. Able to stay mostly in shade before 9am.…
The hotel itself is awesome, the grounds are clean and beautiful and the staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. Kids Club is the best. The team was great, Axel and Daniel made the kids' vacation unforgettable. The beach is clean. Seaweed is cleaned daily. Negatives: - the ocean is not that blue anymore, the storms have left just a couple of sandy areas, the rest is rocky and great for snorkelling, but water shoes are a must - cocktails are not good at all, not terrible, but there were none that I really liked - organization is confusing. Only one buffet was open, but the website/tv guide/signs on restaurants said that two more places are open for breakfast/lunch. The snack bar is closed when the main buffet is open, but there is no schedule posted for it. The hotel app is glitchy. All the written information should be double-checked if it's up to date - mosquitos, small ants in rooms (if food is present)…
I am used to traveling to Cuba during the winter. Grand Tulum is a very nice hotel complex, the staff are really great, it was clean and quiet at night where our rooms were. The food was a little better than what I had previously been used to in Cuba, but not worth the premium price. The à la carte restaurants were awful and a waste of time. The 'oysters rockefeller' at the 'gastronomic' restaurant were off and made me ill. We booked through Air Canada Vacations. There was no rep to meet us at the airport when we arrived. The wait for the bus to take us to the hotel was far too long, and then the bus trip itself was quite long as we were last to get dropped off. The Air Canada rep at the hotel was great. We booked guided tours to Tulum and Chichén Itzá through the AC rep with a company they work with. The Tulum guide was unprofessional, disorganized, couldn't answer basic questions about Tulum. The Chichén Itzá tour included a stop at a sinote and at an historical town. The actual tour of Chichén Itzá was better, could have been more informative but was adequate for the average tourist. Unfortunately this tour was marred by being herded into a shop at the historical town for a special 'tequila' tasting - really just a way to get those on the tour to part with their money for inferior products in a shop where the tour guide had 'friends'. After the tour guide spoke at length about a special 'castigated' church rebuilt to face in an unusual direction, we were not able to enter the church itself to visit. Air Canada Vacations needs to work with its local contractors more closely to ensure quality control. The beaches were nice enough, but there was constant work to clean the seaweed from them. The pools were nice and well kept. It's fair to say Grand Tulum provides a very family friendly environment. On the whole the experience was good, but the extra cost over taking a similar vacation in Cuba was not justified by the quality of the food and entertainment.…
Very big resort, with activities for kind of wishes…people who worked there are polite and very friendly. Hotel was clean and modern….surroundings with animals in the front of suite is great experience…iguanas, capibaras, rakuns are always around
Great resort. Staff bent over backwards to accomodate you. I want to thank Hervenzo and Victor at the Bar by the smaller pool. They were beyond excellent! Very clean and stunning resort. The buffet was spectacular and the ala cart restaurants were top notch.
Just returned from another wonderful week long stay @ Bahia. Here is what you need to KNOW before you GO: The Bahia Resort consist of (4) diffrent resorts. The Coba, The Grand Tulum, The Akumal Luxury, and Adult Only Sian Ka'an, Sian Ka'an is located across the street on the Golf Course and guest have access to all (4) resorts including restaurants. Akumal Luxury has access to All resorts except Sian Ka'an, and it has the best Beach Area along with a great infinity pool. Grand Tulum is newly remodeled and features many sites, pools and activities for families. The Coba is locate just of the beach behind Akumal and has no access to the other resorts, however it's beach is less rocky than Tulum. The Bahia App. is Crap...not very reliable, and most folks cannot get logged in prior to arrival.-Don't worry once you arrive on site the Lobby Welcome team is very helpful ( Go See Lily). Cancun Airport is very busy, as this time of year is HIGH season. Mostly Europeans & Canadians fleeing the Cold Winter. I highly suggest a Private Non Stop Transfer from the airport. Drive time from airport to Bahia is approx. 1:45 min depending on traffic and time of day. Once you arrive- check-in is very smooth and this is the perfect time to make dinner reservations for your stay. ( Yes some Restaurants may be booked on certain evenings) Yes you only get (3) al-a-carte for a 7 day stay.- Choose wisely & remember you have privilege's @ Coba also. The Buffett's at each property are all very good and have several options. Yes the Grand Tulum is a large resort but you can walk or take a cart ride very easily. The property itself is beautiful and well attended. The Beach @ Tulum is very rocky and water shoes are suggested. Or you can walk down to Akumal Beach Area and enjoy. Yes Seaweed has become a great issue all along the coast. It starts in March and is heaviest during April-Aug. Some days are good other days are horrible. The staff works very hard to clear it every day. Tulum features (3) different pool area's: Chill Pool- located directly behind Tequila Rest. is very laid back with very few children- The Main Pool -located directly behind the lobby and is were you have all the activities including Sunday Foam Party. It also features the only swim up bar. This area is family friendly- but be advised -the swim up bar after 4pm each day becomes a bit adult only oriented. Family Splash Pool- is located next to the TRUCK and is great for families with small children. It is convenient to both food and walk up bars. So Mom & Dad can relax and enjoy as well. People & Service -is what makes this resort so special. Everyone seems to go the extra mile to be helpful and enjoyable. Some of OUR Favorites are : Lily at the front desk, Henry & Juan in the Buffett, Allen on the activities team, Librado the best bartender at the main pool. But again- everyone was was super friendly and helpful. Things to be sure and make during your stay...The Silent Disco on Tuesday is a must! Starts usually around 7:30pm The Black Bird & Origins Shows are a big hit- Note they do cost $10US extra to attend. If you Golf the RTJ Course located on property is a must do-Note bring plenty of balls with you:) Just remember folks- this is vacation and Rooms a Wi-Fi are hit and miss at times- just check with lobby staff and they can resolve most any issue. If you are expecting 5 star service and experience 24-7 you will be disappointed. but if you want a 5 Star experience with a 3 star cost you are going to be thrilled.…
Just returned from 1 week stay on 3/3/2023 at the Bahia Principe Grand Tulum. This Resort was FANTASTIC!! It was everything they said it would be and more. Never have we encountered a more friendly Staff, from the moment we stepped up to Reception all the way to Check Out. Everyone at this Resort was kind, happy, and beyond helpful to absolutely anything you requested & they all genuinely looked like they actually enjoyed working there. Geraldo, Fernando, Edwin plus any others I may have forgot to mention, I humbly thank. With a Disability & Mobility Issues, I required the Trolley to pick me up & bring me everywhere I went & with just a phone call, they were there in a flash. Our 'main' Driver, Geraldo, went above & beyond & if he was not able to be there, he made sure one of the other drivers stepped in to help me out. I was so stressed beforehand, because with a Disability, you are at the mercy of any Resort, but they alleviated all my concerns as soon as we got there. Chose 2 shows, Origen & Black Bird, for a nominal fee, and they were top-notch and quite professionally done. Everyone was fantastic! The ability to shuttle between Resorts (there are 3 other Sister Resorts, but just 1 was accessible to utilize, without 'upgrading') & also to go to their Buffets & Restaurants was a plus. We chose the Brazilian 'Gran Tortuga', the Japanese 'Mikado Teppanyaki' & the 'Le Gourmet', Since we were there but a week, we only got 3 a-la-carte Restaurants to choose from; however, you cannot go wrong with any of them. The open air Yucatan was where the Buffet was for breakfast/lunch/dinner and was fantastic! You could always find a myriad of foods to choose from, from the Mexican inspired Dishes, to a fresh variety of fish, pizzas, pasta, omelettes, vegetarian options, and an extensive array of breads, including Gluten free. Their extensive variety of fresh fruits and desserts was a gastronomical experience in itself! The 'Children's' options included a variety of tiny little triangular shaped sandwiches & large, chocolate dipped Marshmallows, tiny burgers, etc. All the Children there smiled as they walked away with every food they ever dreamed of, doughnuts & ice cream included! Oh, to be a kid again! Of the 3 pools at the Grand Tulum, the only one that had a bit of a crowd was the one with the swim-up bar. The other 2 were never crowded. We NEVER had an issue with finding loungers, albeit under the Palapas at the pool or under the Palm Trees or at the Beach. The ONLY recommendation I could make would be to have some stairs going down to the Beach area, with a Handrail, so people like me with Mobility issues, and Seniors & others alike could safely go up & down. Because of this, I myself was unable to get down to the beach. Also, unfortunately for this Resort & all others like them, the Sargassum (Seaweed) is rampant this year, but Bahia does a phenomenal job in trying to remove it, with many, many people raking & loading it up onto trucks which take it to the conveyors for disposal. It is NOT left to rot on the beach at all. They should be commended for this. Since the Bahia Grand Tulum was recently renovated within the past couple of years, this Property was impeccably spotless, from the grounds, to the rooms, to the Restaurants to absolutely everything there. With Covid in the not-too-distant-past, cleanliness was observed everywhere. All the Staff looked very Professional in their uniforms, from the very first person encountered to all the Restaurant Staff in their impeccably white, embroidered Mexican themed Uniforms. The Mexican 'Racoons' (Kudamundi), Agoutis (Large (cute!!) Rodents) & Iguanas were sometimes visible, but never pesky. You can also swim with the Dolphins the at the Dolphinarium! Honestly, the Bahia Grand Tulum delivered everything they promised, from Great Food, friendly, helpful & knowledgeable Staff, impeccably clean rooms & grounds, & a safe & fun getaway experience. This is truly a great Gem, and I will choose them again without hesitation. Thank you all for making this a memorable getaway for us Canadians in the middle of a cold, cold Winter!! Mucho gracias a todas!~~~…
