Certificate of Excellence
The Zanzibar Coffee House Hotel offers a touch of magic and romance in an authentic Arabic house deep in the heart of Stone Town. Transformed into a stylish hotel with harmonious interiors, antiques and rich fabrics, it is one of the oldest buildings in Zanzibar constructed by the Wazir to Sultan Said Bargash in 1885.

Excellent location, charming place and amazing roof top and room! Only weak point for me (although a fantastic room and bathroom) that the bathroom is quite far from the room, however private. Meaning the bathroom is not in the room but the corridor so that is not always convenient, mostly during the night. But otherwise, awesome ! Thank you.

Thank you for your recent stay and your review. We are delighted to hear that we were able to make your stay a great experience. As you noted some of our bathrooms are located on the hallway but are private to the room in order to conserve the original architecture of the historic building. We are looking forward to welcoming you again to the Zanzibar Coffee House when your travels bring you back on the island.

We stayed at Zanzibar Coffee house for the first 3 nights of our trip to Zanzibar. If I could I'd give it 3.5 bubbles.

This is a cheap-and-cheerful-to-midrange option for folks who want to sightsee in Stone Town. It's location is great for walking around...centrally located and only about a 5-7 minute stroll to the seafront (if you don't get turned around in the small lanes and alleys that make up the town). The cafe downstairs is very popular, stays quite busy, and has a good buzz but the fare is fairly basic. By no means poor...just not super special or anything. However, once shown to our room, Espresso on 1st floor, we were pleasantly surprised. Beautiful four poster bed and colonial furniture, large windows...and really quite pretty. Also GREAT air conditioning, and the mattress was super comfortable firm memory foam. We slept really well every night. If you are a light sleeper bring earplugs. I am and didn't need them...but being in center of town, the locals rise early to start their day and the windows aren't soundproofed, so you WILL hear folks coming and going on the street below, scooter horns tooting, and the morning calls to prayer via loudspeakers from mosques in the area (these actually ring out multiple times per day). Rather than disturb us, we loved being surrounded by the unfamiliar sounds of a different culture.

Breakfast is served on their rooftop. The view isn't particulatly aesthetic but you can't fault the Coffee House for that. And they've done a nice job decorating it to be pretty and comfortable. And it gets a much appreciated breeze during the day!

The breakfast included was fine. Standard continental style with options of cooked pancakes or omelette.

They also offer an honesty fridge to guests throughout the day, where you can help yourself to cold drinks including beer, mark down what you took and your room number, and settle up upon checkout. We took advantage of this gem a few times after returning from the hot streets below.

One unusual practice for Westerners to know about. Whenever you leave premises you leave your room key with reception...which is basically a peg board that isn't constantly manned. This seemed risky to us, being used to always keeping key on our person...but we had stowed valuables in the free room safe and decided to go with the flow. We had no issues at all.

Overall we had a very pleasant stay. If you're looking for affordable stay in town center and don't want to give your money to big international chains like Hyatt, etc, defo check it out.

P.s. Stone Town is quite small with limited things to do. 2 full days is plenty to have a look round. Another couple we met had allocated 4 and regretted it. We did drum class at Dhow Music Academy and Tangawazi spice tour/cooking class...which we highly recommend and i'll review on those pages

Our bathroom wasn't ensuite, but rather across hall...but was private with key...which was no bother for us.
