Reception on arrival was good. Our room was spotless with the addition of free safe box, fridge, kettle, air con and complimentary toiletries. Breakfast was good with a wide variety on offer on a self serve basis. If you are looking for quiet evenings and early nights then be aware that they do have entertainment some evenings which can be noisy to around midnight. We did not attend these evenings and they did not interfere with our sleep (it may disturb you if you are a light sleeper or find it difficult to sleep if there is the slightest noise). YOU MUST READ THIS The real value of a hotel becomes most apparent during a crisis and you really find out how good the place is. We were there when Covid-19 came to the island and strict measures were put in place by the Mauritian government. The staff and the manager all had to return to there homes leaving my partner and myself the only people in the hotel as every other guest had left. (the manager could easily have said we had to leave but didn't) The manager made sure that a family of Mauritians who worked at the hotel and lived by made us a breakfast each morning and an evening meal (even though evening meal was not included in our package). They stayed around all day and evening up to around 11pm and he left a tab open at the bar so we could ask them for drinks whenever we wanted them. We were not allowed out of the hotel except to go to the supermarket just down the road so had to spend the days round the pool which was kept clean for us. When the British government advised all citizens to return to the UK we managed to secure an earlier than anticipated flight and the manager came back so we could settle the bill with him however Mauritian rules had banned all taxi's from the roads and our transfer refused to collect us . The hotel manager made phone call after phone call, arguing with the police and even suggesting driving us to the airport himself until he finally secured us a taxi at a very reasonable fare (he didn't need to do this as it was not his problem). I can not thank the hotel manager enough for the help he gave us and the family who kept us fed and provided clean towels and linen throughout our stay. Both went that extra mile and we will certainly return when the pandemic is over THANK YOU LA TONNELLE

Misleading photos and information. No receptionist or hotel manager available on-site. Where the 3-Stars is coming from ... The Trade licence from the Mauritian district council is allocated to "DEGENDT LTD" as "General Retailer" and did not have any mention of the hotel standard or ratings (Photo attached). No mentioned of "La Tonnelle" as Trade Name. Dirty and disorganised ... You better check the hotel before booking.

I have a mix of feelings while reviewing La Tonnelle. I would give 1 star (minus if possible!!!) but also 5 starts. Making it short, please if you stay here, take the Terrace room, Garden View one or the 'Superior Room' because most of people are staying in those rooms which are quite fine. But if you think as us, a simple room is enough, and you see some pics, and get there getting NOTHING for those money, IS FRUSTRATING! And if you read this (LaTonnelle) attitude is everything, even that ROOM, if you would have come to us and apologised and gave us some clear reasons why we are in that one, not the one from Pics, we would have understood it, we are that type of people, but coming and leaving us half a day, WAITING, NO WAY! Bad Thing: Booked with one week before, breakfast & dinner included, planning to stay 2 weeks in Mauritius, 1 more expensive one cheaper, La Tonnelle being the MORE EXPENSIVE ONE. Arriving there, nobody at reception, one girl staying at the long table, asked her, another one comes, no one saying at least HELLO. Doesn't matter, we love to travel so these things are just fine (maybe is shyness or other reasons). As we entered the room, we were simply SHOCKED. 750 EUROS FOR A GARAGE UPDATED TO A ROOM??? Concrete floor, dirty bed sheets, THE DOOR HAD GAPS AND BASICALLY THE ANTS OR OTHER THINGS COULD COME INSIDE!!! Mould everywhere close to floor, simply DISGRACEFUL. We believed it was some sort of mistake, kept calm, called the 'boss' through these girls, not there. Fine, called Booking, (3 EUR/min since Mauritius) after 10 min, answering, a case is made, asking for photos, and that they have contacted the boss called 'Denis' and he will come in 2 HOURS. Fine, calm again, went with my gf to buy some water and eat something. This happened at 13:00 ish on a really sunny day, LAST SUNNY DAY BEFORE CYCLONE STRIKING FOR 2 DAYS. By 15:00 came back, Denis apparently was there, but left again. Will come soon. By 17:00 lost my calm, and called again booking being really pissed off. Again they said he will be there, but LUCKILY WE KEPT THEM BY PHONE (my gf was on the phone since her account on Booking). Went to reception, he basically started shouting to my gf that she wanted FREE UPGRADE and we just want that. We asked him to keep calm and follow us in the room to show him THOSE CONDITIONS. He still kept his opinion that everything is ok and while showing the door or bed sheet he continued with the FREE UPGRADE THING. Luckily again that Booking was on the phone, he basically started shouting really bad to my gf MAKING HER CRY!!! Imagine now me, as a man, what should I have done? Cause I was pushed to my limits, he continuing to shout at me THAT MY WIFE ASKED FOR FREE UPGRADE. We just wanted the room WE PAID FOR FROM PICTURES, NOT A GARAGE / OLD HOSPITAL ROOM! Booking recorded everything and after 30 min staying on hold they asked us to go again to reception. He was changed. Another room was available for us excl. last night, which was fine. We also lost our first day, SUNNY DAY in Mauritius just because HE AVOIDED US, simply avoided!!! Also came with solution that you can leave, simply, with non refundable money, are you stupid? I have read people doing it, but not me! Is my money, I worked for them, wouldn't give to you for free!!! I have to mention that the Superior Room actually was the one in the pictures, having extra a balcony! Good Part: after the incident, everything came to normal, room was quite nice, nothing for 'Superior Room' since we got a Superior Room, but acceptable. The long table and shared food was quite amazing, getting to meet really nice people, from Romania, Turkey, South Africa or USA. Really nice people, really nice experience and sharing their daily activities. VERY NICE IDEA! BEST PART: FOOD! I can say that we almost forgot our incident with Denis, after having dinner there, nice fish / chicken based meals, with aperitif, main course and desert! Also Christmas Dinner was included in our stay, which was amazing regarding food / experience. Some locals came and sang local songs, dancing, really fun and really local experience. Breakfast quite basic, but fine, omelette / scrambled eggs / fried eggs with some bacon / sausage, croissants and sweet things (not my type) but enough. Also cheapest car rental 1200 MUR / day without any credit or things like that. Also I gave the car at my second accommodation, without any extra cost. La Tonnelle could be much better if they would be at least hones with those rooms (only few of them). Great Location, only 10 min walk to Trou aux Biches beach and 6 min to local supermarket.

Hi stayed at La Tonnelle for 16 nights in December 2018 as part of an Expedia package. I don't stay at more expensive hotels during vacations because that's all I do when I travel on business, so I selected La Tonnelle based on location and the dinner arrangements (sitting at a long table, an environment I worked in years ago in hospitality, which creates great mingling amongst guests). I wanted a 'local' experience and got that, in a number of ways, and made some new friends while dining together, and am grateful for that experience. Upsides: The dinner menu was 'good' (in fact, there were some delicious dishes throughout my stay), which works well when serving guests in a communal dining environment. A recommendation would be to serve more vegetables with 'stew-like' main courses (I heard this comment from other guests too). Downsides: during my first few days the water pump showed symptoms of issues (weak water flow in shower/sink) and on Christmas Day I woke up (early, to go on a day trip) to no running water to be told the water pump had failed but would be fixed that day. When I returned later in the day it seemed to be working, but...a few days later - no water, again. This may seem not like a big deal, but when a problem reoccurs it raises a red flag (in my years of experience in hospitality). My room had a very musty smell in it when I first arrived (something I heard from others too) and running the a/c seemed to alleviate that a bit plus the room had an air freshener dispenser which masked the smell too. I would go as far as recommending the mattress in Room 10 be replaced (springs worn out, strange smell in mattress). On Christmas & New Years Eves, the hotel put on a banquet but some of the enjoyment of these celebrations was lost due to the 'too noisy' music environment (I heard this from other guests, including some much younger than me). While it's a time for celebration (which I completely understand), the noise level (until 12.30-1am) was very off-putting, and could be heard from my room which was ground level around the back of the building. It was way too loud. While some of this criticism sounds 'harsh', it's honest. My rating on the physical hotel would really be 2.5-3 stars if that was possible on TripAdvisor as the guest house is showing signs of wear that can only be remedied by closing for at least a week of maintenance (every year). - any lost revenue would quickly be recovered by higher customer satisfaction and repeat business. However, a rating on overall service would be 3-4 stars as the staff tries really hard to please guests. Thank you.

A reasonable sized hotel with small rooms but in a good location. I stayed with my husband in Nov 2018 for a week. The view out of the room was poor (over looking a roof and then into another hotel) but it didn't say when we booked that we'd have a good view. The room itself had a double bed, a fridge, a cupboard a wardrobe and about 1/4 of the room was the bathroom and a separate toilet. There was very little floor space which made it difficult to pass each other when moving round the room (unless you went over the bed) and it didn't have a balcony which meant the only place we could dry wet clothes was in the shower/bathroom. The sink in the bathroom was extremely small. You could only just wash your hands in it so when you tried to wash your face the water went everywhere and you could easily headbutt the tap. On the positive side the ac was really efficient and the room was cleaned well every day. Breakfast was a little sparse with a limited range of breakfast food available which could be expected I suppose with it being such a small hotel. The dinner set menu was written up every day at breakfast time so you could see what was on offer (if you either stayed half-board or paid extra) or you could go to a local restaurant instead. We liked how all the guests who had dinner were all seated on one long table together. It was like having a huge family mean every night. This might not be for everyone but for us it meant we got chatting to people we might not have otherwise, and also as it was a set meal we got to try foods we probably wouldn't have ordered if we'd gone to a restaurant - including sunfish apparently... A nice little hotel that's prefect if you just want somewhere clean to sleep and have a few meals. 3 star at best but the staff were nice.

Located meters away from the sea, La Tonnelle was a perfect place to start our holiday. The rooms were ample sized and had everything we needed. Bed was comfortable, shower was powerful. Having said that the bathroom/shower wasn't the best design (water gets everywhere) Breakfast was a simple buffet style breakfast with everything you need. The chefs cook you nice fresh omelette if you want too. The staff were all really friendly and helpful. The guesthouse is located near to lots of small shacks that serve the BEST food.

In July 2018 my Wife , Daughter and myself arrived in Trou Aux Biches at the shocking La Tonnelle and after we arrived we were showed to our room by a local employee and then to our horror we found a shower which was blocked and overflowing , Towels were old, worn out and mouldy , the bathroom was mouldy, the bedrooms smelt of mould , the floors were painted green on concrete which was coming of on our feet , the beds were smelly and the place smelt of dust ,this was all found in 20 minutes of our arrival. The rooms are substandard and equivalent to a bad backpackers hostel or Pension. we left immediately to another hotel. I rang the owner a few days later as he wasn't available and couldn't get hold of him , so i want to La Tonnelle to ask for my deposit back which was 296 EUROS ( $486 Australian Dollars ) the owner was there and he refused to give my money back under any circumstances. Do not go to La Tonnelle its a complete dive , the local staff who worked there also expressed their concern about the place to us , the owner is a frenchman from France not mauritius, his office is a mess with paperwork all over his desk and barely can keep things running , the owner tried to show me on his computer what the rooms looked like and on the internet its amazing how different it is compared to the actual room also his website gives the impression that La Tonnelle is on the beach when it is not at all , i think he may have updated his website since then when we arrived the owner was at the bar , he was the only one there and the only one drinking. we went to a very nice Hotel called Volie Bleu in Pointes aux piments it was fantastique, on the beach, all new, Lovely people working there and cost less than La Tonnelle. Do not pay a deposit at any hotel unless you are sure things are what they seem! even if you do your homework you can still be caught by tricky operators!

Hello this comment is the pure bad faith..Our house was completely renewal 3 years ago ... The room you had received was renewal entirely (tiles, sanitary, bedding) less than 2 months ago .. . The problem is that a member of your family WISHED a room in the water .. which is not our case and is not our program ... To read all reviews ... I think either you have a problem, the majority of our guests are stupid ... When we choose to book promotion and not refundable .... there is indeed no refund ... We should have received the entire stay booked.

Sweet staff and thoughtfully furnished and decorated. The breakfast was lovely and good AC in the rooms although the rest of the old house is rather hot. The bedrooms are simple and have no sound proofing so you can enjoy next doors conversation or other antics in bed with you! Meals and drinks are served on the road side terrace which is kept cool with electric fans and is a great place for a drink and watching the world go by. The location is near enough to the centre but just avoids the huge numbers of crowds and tour groups that fill Hoi An at night. I would recommend a two night stay.

Located in suburb of Trou aux Biches in the north west of the island. Bit tricky to find but if you ask where the dive centre is will find it straight away (right across the parking area). Pool located behind dive centre. Denis was a pleasant host who went out of his way, I didn't have a universal charger so mine didn't fit the wall socket - Denis came to the rescue! Rooms are clean with the usual tea / coffee, a bar fridge with complimentary bottle of water, free Wi-Fi which worked excellently & A/C. Breakfast offering was adequate & the kitchen also made egg dishes on request although not a standard breakfast item. Dinner is served in a small no frills restaurant alongside the guesthouse & all the meals I had were good. There are a number of choices for restaurants withing 2 km's should one want to try something different. The main beach is a short 3 min walk down the road & towels are provided for. If you need any odds & ends there is a supermarket about 1 km away called Chezpop which has all one needs. Overall excellent value on a half board package, also included car hire which Denis arranged at only Rs 1,200 / day (around 30 Euros). Will certainly be back!
