We visited Roots right before the 2nd wave of Corona hit, and it was everything we needed to blow off some steam in the midst of this hectic year.
The staff was highly professional and took all precautionary measures to makes this experience as relaxing and s safe as it could possibly be.
They introduced us to all the guidelines and rules, they always had their masks on, they were always there to provide all measures of comfort.
The food was great (all thanks to chef Ahmed), the servicing was on point (special thanks to Shazly for that), we never felt when the room service was done, as they did it at times when we would not be bothered (such as during meals), which was perfect as the rooms were always clean.
A special thanks go to Moudi, the manager of the facility and the very friendly companion to chill nights.

and as the great Eagles once said "You can check out any time you like but you could never leave", I am sure this was the first of many returns.

We were lucky enough to revisit Roots prior to second lockdown.
As usual, great hospitality, superb diving (did I mention the 4 eagle rays!) & friendly, professional staff who ensured Covid safety wasn't compromised.
Daily temperature checks, hand sanitisers & masks freely available where necessary - every effort has been made to meet regulation requirements. However, such is the relaxed atmosphere you almost forget that Covid exists.
Just what we needed after what has been a very strange year.

I came alone and spent a great week living in the camp and diving on the house reef and in some beautiful bays that are easily reached by minibus. The house reef is really good in general, and in particular for night dives, as there were many Spanish dancers in the bay. The hosts and all the stuff are very friendly and helpful. They made sure l had buddies to dive with, didn’t even need to look for someone to dive with. There are lot of experienced divers coming here so it was easy to make long dives (up to 90 minutes) in a relaxed way. It is a small place, everyone dines in the same space, and hangs around during the day on the same beach and in the same dive shed. It makes it very comfortable and sociable for those who come alone and are not sure with whom can they dive or chat. I also liked the food. The menu is simple, but the dishes are much more tasty than in the big hotels or larger diving camps with large buffets. There is always an option for vegetarians too. Clare and Steve are not just managers, they are truly great hosts for their guests. I was concerned before coming about the possible noise from the road, but it turned out to be very quiet with extremely low traffic. The distance from the camp to the beach on the other side of the road is also small. All the equipment is brought to the beach and back by the very helpful dive centre stuff, who also rinse it at the end of the day if someone did not do it themselves at the beach. I also enjoyed making a hike into the desert and meditating there in a complete silence. Due to the pricing policy of the diving centre it is not very economical to dive once a day, but from two dives a day it is fine, and it is a great place to dive a lot. The bay is also good for snorkelling.
The communication with the owners was very swift and easy, l was given all the information l needed before arrival. I am truly grateful for this week at the Roots and I am sure l will come back in the future.

I visited Roots Red Sea to do my open water course and loved every second of it.
I stayed in the eco huts which were very clean and cosy with beautiful tapestry patterns on the beds and windows.
The showers were less than a minutes walk away and also incredibly well kept and clean. The water pressure wasn’t the best, but did the job (to be expected in a mountain dessert area I guess)

There were ample amounts of food for breakfast lunch and dinner buffets. I would have enjoyed trying some traditional/local Egyptian dishes but what we did have was always tasty. I was appreciative of the effort that was made for me and my vegan dietary requirements. Michael and his team were excellent at helping me find out what I could and couldn’t have, thank you.

The people and the diving were of course the highlight of my time. As a diving centre it is the perfect location, the house reef just across the road is incredibly beautiful and home to a wide variety of marine life.
The diving instructors and all of the staff at Roots Red Sea are super friendly, professional and welcoming. As a newbie to diving, they made me feel very calm and safe in the sea and throughout the whole of my course, nothing was too much for them.

A big thank you to my instructor Kirsty for everything, you were incredibly patient and informative, I couldn’t have asked for a better instructor.
Also thanks to the other dive instructors Fathi, Moudi and Ramadan who helped along the way.

Another highlight was the sunrise beach yoga also led by Kirsty. This was a beautiful way to start the day every morning with stunning views of the sunrise and the sound of waves crashing against the reef.
If only I could start every day like this!

The centre is definitely a location made for diving as it is rather secluded and not much within walking distance. However if you are unable to dive for any reason the staff are more than happy to help arrange beautiful excursions for you to explore some more of Egypt.

In conclusion, I’d definitely recommend this trip to anyone who is thinking of visiting. I will definitely be back and hope to make it a yearly trip for myself and will be bringing friends next time too.

Thank you Roots Red Sea :)

Visited in 11/21 on a 7 day stay combined with a liveaboard organised through the in house Pharaoh Dive Club.
All arrangements prior to departure were dealt with efficiently & with great flexibility.
Pick up from Hugharda airport was smooth, being met by a well turned out taxi for the ~90 minutes drive to Roots.
Arrived early evening to a smooth checkin & was in my air conditioned room in minutes.
Got to meet fellow divers over buffet dinner sat outside at a communal table.
The food served, while not gourmet, is very tasty & plentiful to replace all those calories burnt during the day.
Diving is a flexible affair, leaving number of dives per day & timing up to you.
Only buddy diving allowed & log in/out system enforced on the north & south house reefs.
Pharaoh Dive Club which is owned by Roots have a friendly & efficient staff who can solve any small equipment problems or cater for individual diving needs.
My experience was excellent with them helping to fix major kit issues with some excellent rental gear.
The diving days were spent at their beach location which has a dive centre & restaurant for lunch & soft drinks. It is 5-10 minutes walk from Roots although there is transport available which is normally used to move equipment to the beach every day.
The two house reefs, north & south, are brimming with all sorts of sea life with no real need to go below 20 metres, although it is possible to go much deeper with some divers going to 50 metres for more technical stuff. Visibility was always in +50M range.
As a budding, but ageing, underwater photographer, I managed over 1000 photos during my stay, covering a wide range of fish & coral types.
I could go on & on about how great the place is, but will close now with massive thanks to Steve Rattle & his Roots/Pharaoh crews for a fabulous time & looking forward to returning next year

Roots Red Sea is a ‘diving camp’ but is really a hotel for divers that offers both lovely rooms, and more basic accommodation for those who need to spend less.
Don’t expect a typical modern hotel with every facility. *Do* expect friendly staff, good food, a dive shop, and to meet the owners who are usually around.
The setting is the Egyptian Eastern Desert, as harsh and beautiful as you could wish for. When you step out of your room you can see the desert around you, and you also know that breakfast is a few minutes walk away. Breakfast completed, it’s a 5-10 minute walk, crossing the main coastal road (the traffic is light but won’t stop for you!) to Pharaoh Dive Centre. Lunch is over near the dive centre. The evening meal is back at Roots. Menus are set. The food is good. Dining is at tables as long as you wish (we were eighteen divers).
I didn’t see inside the most basic accommodation (which rooms share bathroom, etc., facilities). We stayed in a ‘deluxe chalet. It was small but sufficient for two single beds and luggage. A few more shelves for clothes would have been useful. The en suite was clean and the plumbing worked.
Wifi is a paid extra. It was weak in some accommodation (though fine in reception) and the speed was poor. The owners are aware that this is a problem, but … well … it’s in the Egyptian desert, not in a city or even a town. My advice is to stick to messages without photos or to send photos reduced to a small file size. Turn off your phone’s features that eat up the Megabytes (such as automatic app updates and full phone backups) or you’ll soon use up your wifi allowance.
They say that Roots is a place run *by* divers *for* divers. I can only agree. I would be happy to stay again.

[I’ve also separately review the Pharoah Dive Club, which is part of Roots Red Sea.]

I went with friends who dive but I myself don’t. I was welcomed equally and during my time by myself was looked after amazingly by Clare and all the staff.
Pool and beach area was lovely with shade if needed. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and all non alcoholic drinks were included in my package and were lovely. I don’t have dietary requirements but one of my friends is vegetarian and was catered for at every meal.
My little bungalow was great for me on my own. Beach towels and room towels were provided and changed when needed. I had my own shower and my room was cleaned daily. The air con was great and definitely needed ☀️. WiFi was available in reception and pool area and reached to my room most of the time, but it was nice to have a break from the outside world.
The resort was eco friendly and big in sea conservation. One day I joined a beach clean in the local area 👍🏼.
Airport transfers were arranged by Roots and luggage taken and collected from my bungalow.
Whether a diver or not I would recommend Roots for a relaxing break in a quiet location with staff only too happy to help in any way needed.

This place is unassuming when you 1st see it along the roadside, but is a great place to spend a relaxing week in Egypt. This is especially a place for divers, which is who they cater to. (Although its also a great base for exploring the region too).
They offer daily meals, sometimes on the beach and a weekly beach BBQ. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. The house reef is great for all kinds of divers, with a great variety of sea life and coral. Staff is on hand to help if needed. The nights offer great views of the stars. The whole place is clean, almost feels like you are staying with family. I will be back.

There aren't enough superlatives to describe this place..
The diving is exceptional. The House Reef is really healthy and surprised us with each and every dive.
There are lots of opportunities to dive by yourself whenever you like during the day or at night. Or take the option of their guided shore and boat dives…

Steve & Claire who run the place are wonderful people wha are clearly very driven to make the place as sustainable as possible which is a challenge in a country like Egypt. They have planted a huge garden full of succulents and native plants to try and green-up the otherwise arid landscape and bring a softness and a beauty to the place. This is a magnet for butterflies and birdlife with egrets regularly dancing around the dive kit.

They have a fantastic team around them and the staff in the kitchen and bar warm and welcoming, incredibly friendly and generous. Even the gardeners who don’t speak any English will say “Good morning!” and wave to you with a smile. The dive staff are unbelievably attentive and it’s hard to lift a finger without somebody anticipating your every need and being there to help you with your wetsuits zip or your BC.

The options of diving are mixed and varied with wide variety. Shore dives up down the coast, and then the option of speedboat rides to local reefs and trips further field, like Elphinstone to see the Oceanic white tips, so whatever your level of ability and adventure with your budget, you’re really well catered for.
The system with the dive kit is very well organised, so even when they have a full house of divers, the place runs like clockwork and nothing seems to get mixed up or omitted.

As we were leaving, a family arrived with two boys, aged 10 and 12. I can’t think of a more perfect place to teach young children about diving. Only one session in the pool and then they were out on the house reef and on their first dive, they saw an octopus stonefish and a turtle. You can’t really get any better than that.

It’s no wonder that many of the guests at Roots are repeat visitors… as we were leaving I felt really torn away, desperate to come back and experience more of this oasis of diving.

Was great to get away in the midst of the pandemic and Roots couldn't have done more to accommodate. They were great during the booking, keeping it very flexible with unknown flights and once we were there, everything was ready for us. Food was great considering there was only 3 or 4 of us at any one time (BBQ day was the best) and the room was what you expect; simple but had everything you need for after a day of diving.

Diving was perfect for doing our technical courses, with a great mix of deep and reef to cover off all the skills and dives needed. Wildlife there was limited but we were there in December so not the best time for things - though we did get 1 dolphin join us for a dive! Dive centre is great too and right on the beach with very helpful staff to carry tanks to the water edge. With no one else really there, we had the entire centre to ourselves which was great but also a little sad as we didn't get the divers chat/banter you would normally get, but that is no one fault except Covid.

All in all, had a great time and was just what we needed; to feel a little normal again, even if it was just for a couple of weeks. Thanks to everyone at Roots, with special thanks to Rita, Roy and Yogi who gave good fusses and cuddles, especially when Steve wasn't looking.

Hi Carly, we run excursions all over Egypt so the short answer is yes, you can take a look at the web page pdctravel com for more info.To visit the Pyramids from us is quite a journey, we are closer to the main tourism hub of Luxor. Yes we have Wifi available in the main reception which is normally charged at €10 per week. If you are planning to be here longer and or want your own internet to use in the room we can arrange a dongle (approx. 200 le) and sim card 7gb (200le approx.) if you have your own dongle we can just get you the sim card. Hope that helps and please let me know if you have any other questions. Many Regards Clare
