Part of the abbey is a restaurant. You must eat here. You will personally witness some of the finest French food you may ever taste. We were pleasantly shocked when we dined at the restaurant. This is where technical, skill, balance and shear good cooking appear as a tasty morsel before you. You have died and gone to French heaven.
You will not go away full but pleasantly satisfied and you will find yourself talking about your experience at the hands of a French master for days. Heaven on a plate in a French Abbaye.
There are also two accommodation wings, with different star ratings, one 2-star and one 3, we stayed in the 3-star part, originally the male staff accommodation (the other was the female staff) I think the only difference is the room size. Our room was good size, with a bathroom that was adequate and no more with rather noisy pipes. The restaurant is very good although the menu is rather restricted if you are not having half-board (and then there is no choice). Breakfast excellent, staff excellent.
Access by car is straightforward - they tell you where to go at reception on arrival, and it is easy enough to drive into the main courtyard before getting the route and the keycode for the private car park (which has its own entrance to the hotel). The grounds are vast and the village very quiet, our room looked over to a large tree and nothing else, at the night we heard the leaves rustling and owls hooting, nothing else at all.
The building has been modernised to an extent, but the long echoing corridors and some rather lovely conference rooms are evocative of the former use of the building. It is strongly advisable to visit the museum next door, because then you can understand the place better. (It also has a superb exhibition of tapestry.)
A very peaceful and evocative place to stay, that could never appear overcrowded because of its sheer size, and there remain elements of its institutional past as part of the modern hotel.
There was a wedding party arriving as we left, a wonderful setting for that.
There's not a great deal to do round about, apart from walking. The village has a small but very good glass museum, but that's about it.
Highly recommended.
It's such a shame that this slack lazy attitude lets down the overall client experience - the place is really lovely but we find this kind of attitude very annoying. I would have heartily recommended the place otherwise.
In the evening we tried to get a coffee from the bar. The very pleasant barman quickly took our order but then vanished for about 20 minutes. When he did reappear he was most apologetic and gave us the coffees free. A similar delay happened when we asked for a beer later but these were not offered free! At 3€ for a small beer these are not cheap drinks!
Breakfast, which is in the same place for both hotels was a huge let down. There were only 2 cold meats on offer, 2 cheeses and sliced bread. The unsliced bread was not refilled and it was only 9am. I was put off as well by the fact that one pair of guests had brought their admittedly very well behaved labrador into the breakfast room with them and they were next to the cold meat table.
The grounds of the hotel were excellent for a gentle stroll with our own dog before we set off home. The building was originally the world famous Abbey School and continued as an educational establishment until the 1990's albeit as a military training school from about 1800 I think! The rooms have a very informative booklet with the history of the School in it in English and French.
The next day, I went to the reception and the ladies there agreed that I could get a room in the main building the next day. When I went at the reception the next day, the Office Manager did not want to give me the room. I explained to her that this was the agreement I had with hear employees the day before. Then she started shouting at me and saying that she does not have a room. This was VERY rude and unprofessional. Especially being the Officer Manager there. Clearly this lady is not suitable to do this job.
At the end I could change the room to the main building and the room was nice but I still don't like the fact that this lady was so rude.
"Go for the Logis des Pères - it has the better rooms. The other wing is Pavillon des Hôtes"Read full review
