We have travelled to the Algarve many times, always over the Xmas period and we've always stayed in the Almancil area, normally in Quinta do Lago or nearby. Over the years, we have sampled so many hotels, apartments etc..., most of which were above average and of good standard. It was therefore pleasantly surprisingly to discover the Formosa Park Hotel which I believe was built just over 2 years ago. The complex consists of just under 80 1 to 2 bedroom apartments which are beautifully furnished, spacious and conveniently located 400 yards from the beach. The facilities include a large swimming pool and a children's play area, all set in a mature and nicely landscaped garden setting. The service in the restaurant, whether at breakfast time or dining in the evening, was superlative, which in many ways, typified the friendliness of the Portuguese people. The staff on reception were abundantly warm and genuinely friendly. And to cap it all, for a 4 star hotel, the prices were very reasonable. The only downside is the hotel closes for 3 weeks in December and reopens on 27th. As we tend to travel on 26th, it means we have to stay the 1st night in a different hotel.

I've stayed in tons of places in Algarve and this was one of the best considering quality and price. I've stayed there in August when it was crowded and had a wonderful stay.
The staff is very competent and friendly. The suites are quite spacious and confortable, a little bit to the pretentious side but still very livable. It's just a small stroll to the beach and it is a beautiful beach. Breakfast is excelent. Regarding the price it is indeed perfect. Quiet, everything in perfect shape. A family place with a small pool for the kids and a playground. The elevators are also convenient for people with small children.
The not so impecable side to it:
- the decoration although trendy is in fact of poor taste;
- as in Quinta do Lago "next door", you are in a touristic resort, they are all the same wherever you go;
- the beach chairs are not located in the beach near the hotel, but in fact in another beach that you either walk for half an hour or take the car for a minute;
- we had to wait on arrival for about 4 hours, they gave us access to the pool, we decided to go for lunch and shopping because we didn't have our swimming suits on and would need to unpack, they did give us a complimentary fruit basket and ofered us a coffee while we were waiting for the first hour;
- everything is very expensive at the hotel, so we never ate there, we either had dinner out or cooked, something like 15/20 euros for a normal spaghetti with tomato sauce...
I would come back, regardless.

This was an absolutely marvelous experience for my wife and I and for our family ages from 12 - 24. we were not aware of the hotel but when we described what we wanted to our travel agent they recommended it.
The hotel is situated among pine trees just 5 minutes walk from the fabulous beach in a quiet location yet only a short taxi ride to the bustling shopping centre at quinta do lago and the night spots of Val de Lobo - very safe for kids of all ages. It has access to the private members golf club of Pinheros Altos at reduced green fee rates. Whether you want to chill out, be active or play golf the Formosa has everything. Restaurant is excellent for dinner and not overpriced. The 2 bedroom 2 bathroom suites are perfect for a family of 5 or two couples. There is a large lounge and balcony between the bedrooms. Wonderful! We booked it with Fairways and Holidays 02897511232 who were very helpful.

When my wife And I turned up to the restaurant to have our last dinner together before I flew back to Australia to be apart from her for 6 months the restaurant manager said
" you cannot dine here"
I replied with " I beg your pardon?"
He said " you cannot dine here, no shorts allowed"
I looked around the restaurant and there was one couple with a very young child and another elderly couple in the corner, it was a Monday night.
When I advised him I was staying in the hotel so could easily return to my room and put on a pair of long pants, however was that really necessary? He replied you must come back wearing suit pants and dress shoes or you cannot eat here.
I advised I would comply with his wishes despite having eaten breakfast and lunch wearing the same clothes I had on for the last 2 days in the same restaurant and he was the first person to mention a dress code, I also advised this "dress code" was not detailed in writing anywhere in the literature of the hotel or in the restaurant.
My wife took a seat and waited for me to change and return, when I came back she was visibly in tears.
Then this insensitive fool came straight up to us while I was trying to console my wife and interrupted us saying " are you ready to order yet?"
We both got up, without saying a word walked to reception and ordered a taxi (€15 each way) to a restaurant in Dunas Douradis
This man's attitude to paying guests of his hotel was disgusting and he should be ashamed of himself

Almancil - The Formosa Park Hotel , Algarve, Portugal
Date - 9th July 2006
Reviewer - Accountant, Belfast, Northern Ireland

We have just returned from 2 weeks at the Formosa Park Hotel near Almancil Algarve. There were 3 of us, my wife & I and 10 year old son. Our holiday objectives were to combine some heathly sun with a few games of golf and to stay in clean comfortable accomodation and to enjoy good food in the evenings.- with some shopping thrown in.

The Formosa delivered in every respect. This is a relatively new complex and it certainly looked new. The rooms are spacious and spotlessly clean. The is a comprehensive maid service every day. Our room had a kitchenette for cooking and a refrigerator for storing drinks and food stuff. This is wonderful as you may wish to give the rich restaurant food a break . It is also very convenience to have ice cold drinks without having to pay hotel prices. The room had a good TV with cable, Safe and excellent balcony. The bathrooms were again spacious and well finished.

We have stayed in many 5star properties that could learn from the Formosa's attention to detail. Everything worked, no faults and the staff and I do mean everyone of the staff we encountered could not have been more pleasant or helpful. The staff can make or break a hotel and the staff at the Formosa certainly enhance the experience

The pool is really clean and a good size for both children and adults.The Praia de Ancao beach is a short walk from the Hotel through a wooded area and it is absolutely fabulous. Blue Flag and guarded by lifeguards. Beds to hire are expensive, but to walk this uncrouded beach is a delight. It stretches for miles and is fine sand without shingle and really very clean.
The food at the Formosa was exceptional. The breakfast was first class with an excelent fruit selection. lunchtime snacks slightly pricy but again good quality. Evening a la carte menu somewhat limited if you were staying full board for two weeks but the quality was amongst the best hotel food we had experienced.
The hotel is remote enough to feel totally isolated. You will need to hire a car to get to Almancil and surrounding sites. There is no local supermarket but the main shopping complex La Quinta shopping is excellent with some fine restaurants and shops and only 5 mins drive from the hotel. Faro Shopping if you want a mall shopping experience is only 15 mins drive and the main road into Faro
The Hotel is linked to the Pinheiros Altos Golf resort and this is a treat to play. €45 for a round booked through the hotel. great value for this course.
Everyone in the family was delighted with the facilities, food an leisure activities.
We would have no hesitation on returning to the Formosa and indeed would commend it highly to prospective travellers

We have just returned from a week at the Formosa Park Hotel where we had an excellent holiday. When we arrived we were told they were upgrading us to a 2 bedroom apartment (we had booked a one bed for 3 adults). The apartment was very spacious, extremely clean and had a large balcony. The 2 bedrooms are at the opposite ends of the suite and each have their own bathrooms. There is a separate kitchen with large fridgefreezer, toaster, hob etc

The breakfast was very good and we were only sorry that we decided to have dinner in the restaurant the evening before we left because the food and service were top class. Had we eaten dinner there sooner, we would have gone there a few more nights! The pool is lovely and there is a smaller pool for the children. There is also a playground for the children located away from the pool area. Nearby there is a fantastic beach and a great selection of restaurants, including 2 or 3 Michelin star locations. It is advisable to hire a car to travel around the area, particularly to Vale de Lobo and Quinta do Lago which are both lovely areas.

I would highly recommend this location for people with young families or for couples looking for a relaxing holiday. We definitely plan to go back!

We only had one night at the Ria Formosa Park Hotel but wished we had stayed a lot longer. This is a place I would highly recommend but you will need a car if you wish to look around the area. The beach is close to the hotel and is just a short walk through the nature reserve. We will definitely be back if they keep their prices reasonable. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The taxi they called for us was very good and comfortable and only 30 euros to Albufeira. We didn't have much time to look around so cannot comment on the area except that the beach is very long, flat and very clean - great for walkers!

We went there 2 weeks (end June-begin July) this year 2006. Really good service, excellent value for money, nice location. Note that you need a car or a taxi whenever you want to leave the hotel, no shopping available close to it. Very confortable, some planes above our heads but nothing really disturbing (fortunately, no flights during the night !). See one of the pictures of the hotel taken during the take-off...Great surrounding, with natural reserve and nice beach. Absolutely top-level the last week of June, a little more crowdy the first week of July which makes sometimes difficult to get a good place around the pool (but this is normal, and again nothing really catastrophic). Sadly enough, we had to pay to get a sun chair and umbrella on the beach...18 € a day, this is expensive. But the hotel is not responsible for that, although they arranged for that last year...
As a summary: really good, we definitely will go back there.

We booked a 2 bedroom apartment with garden view. On arrival we found we were overlooking the car park! When we queried this we were told they do not have apartments with garden views! We pointed out that their website said differently. We had a surprise party to attend on our 1st night at 8pm. At 7pm we went to the room to get ready only to find our key cards did not work. Reception tried master key cards to no avail. They also tried an electronic machine on the door but this did not work either. Eventually the maintenance man was phoned but it took half an hour for him to arrive. He tried to open door by various methods but failed. Luckily we had left the balcony door open so he used a ladder to gain access via the balcony. However he could not open the door from the inside either & had to remove the entire lock to open the door. By the time we got into the room it was now 8.30pm so we were an hour late for our appointment. We met the manager the next morning to air our complaints and concerns that had there been a fire & we were in the room we would not have been able to get out. He did not seem unduly concerned & said they would have broken the door down! We also told him about the non existent garden view. He really was not interested but eventually agreed to move us to a room with pool view. The service in the bar/restaurant was very poor. We had to ask them to wipe the table continuously. Some of the staff had very poor english and so we often got the wrong order! We would not recommend this hotel at all!

Just returned from a weeks golf break @ The Formosa Park with 2 other golfers and we were all in agreement that this is a wonderful place to stay.....

All Staff are so friendly and very professional ( even cleaner returned my Samsung tablet to reception after I left it in the bathroom when we checked out )......

We stayed in a 2 bedroom apt which was ridiculously huge

Breakfast was fantastic and had great selection

3 course dinner was nice, tastey and fresh .... and unlike some British numpty group of 4 who had to complain that it wasnt 5* quality we found it to be just fine.....( felt so sorry for the lovely waiter be talked to like a piece of rubbish and made me fell embarrassed to be a Brit)

Felt like saying to the group that the clues in the title 'Formosa APARTHOTEL' Hence the majority of guest either eat out or eat in their apartment......but as ive stated the evening meals are of good quality.......

Also if you call €4 a lrg pint of beer expensive (€2 happy hour) then your living way way way in the past......not an expensive resort by any means
Golf courses around the area are fantastic......San Lorenzo is still world class, Quinta South is tough for high h/c'ers (my 2 playing partners struggled ) but a stunning course.....
Vale do lobo Royal very nice track and hard to choose between the Ocean as to totally different tests
Pin Altos, again a lovely course and one to add to your golfing portfolio

So if your thinking of a trip to the Algarve, you want go far wrong at The Formosa Park (families or golfers)

A little tip: a must is the champagne buffet at The sister hotel dona Filipa on wednesday nights at Vale do lobo....reception staff will book for you ..... €53pp and your glass is never empty and a choice of 35 courses......from cold lobster to hot beef Wellington......a great night out.

Taxis are about € 15 each way arnd the local area but hotel has great rate for carhire
