My wife and I and two adult daughters enjoyed a wonderful three days on Mackinac Island, staying at the Grand Hotel. This is a “must do” trip!! The only way to access Mackinac Island is by ferry, and the only vehicle allowed on the island is a singular ambulance. All other modes of transportation are: horse drawn carriage, horseback, bicycle or your own two feet! Very quiet and pollution free environment. And the Grand Hotel—Excellent, excellent experience! This hundred year old hotel is magnificent. This stay was a “bucket list” item after seeing the movie “Somewhere in Time” many years previously. Our suite was beautiful, spacious and spotless. The breakfast and dinner (included in the price) were all one could ask-delicious, generous and served by individuals who genuinely seemed like they really enjoyed their responsibilities. The grounds are meticulous with various gardens to enjoy. The pool is huge, with enough room for all, even on a hot August afternoon. We loved the entire experience, were sorry to depart.…
30+ years ago I was on vacation with my parents at Mackinaw Island when I first saw the Grand Hotel. All we could do was look at it from the street and I made a promise that someday I would stay at that beautiful hotel! I finally made it and it was better than I hoped! Manicured grounds, walking paths, gorgeous view, lovely room, excellent food. The views from the porch was awesome. The staff was very helpful and courteous. We booked our stay in February for our July visit. We booked a less expensive interior room but at check-in we found that we had been upgraded to an exterior room so we had an amazing view! It was perfect and my wife loved the whole experience!
There is no car traffic on the island, only transporation is via ferry from Mackinac City and then on foot or horse drawn carriages. There is a good mix of history, architecture, natural beauty and fun shops. The Grand Hotel is exquisite. Its claim to fame is the largest front porch in the world with its wonderful view of Lake Huron. The meals are fantastic and the service first class. Enjoy the varied rooms available and I recommend staying on the Lake side (or front) of the hotel so you can look out at the lake, lighthouses and boats
Amazing. The hotel and all the property are beautiful. Reminiscent of the past but up to its 5 star standards. The dinning room food was delectable. Our room was impeccable and the bed so comfortable. Cannot wait to return.
We didn't stay at the hotel ($600 per night!) but we did tour the hotel and island. My late mother in law worked at the hotel during her college years and told many stories about this wonderful place. I also love the movie "Somewhere in Time" which was filmed there. It looks just like it did in the movie 30 years ago. It was a dream fulfilled to visit this timeless, wonderful, place.
