We had booked Raakani for 4 nights. We left after 1 which the staff were very accommodating about. The guest house was not to our taste at all, you sort of felt like you had a room in somebody else’s home and it was just a little bit too weird. I think unfortunately the pictures have been taken to show something that is not quite representative of what it’s actually like. The bed linen was stained but other than that the room was clean. The beach in front of the hotel is not a bikini beach. Excursions are expensive in Guraidhoo, we changed to Maafushi, accommodation is better here and you can get half day snorkel trips for $25.

We are sure this is the best option to stay in Guraidhoo. The new bikini beach is just outside the bedrooms, amazing sea views, close to the harbour and great price-value relationship. It is very convenient if you intend to do diving and it has great comunal areas as well. Since the owners of Manta Divers Dive Center took over the place is just getting better and better. Try the Maldivian breakfast and enjoy the sunset!

Raakani Villas is a nice and small hotel, where you have a direct and friendly contact to the owner. You can plan snorkeling tours and you will be guided in the water so you really see all the nice underwater life, sharks, turtles, rare fishes, starfishes, colourful shells and a lot more... The hotel is directly at the ocean with a beautiful view, the rooms are big and clean, the beds are comfortable, the bathroom is very nice and clean also and you can sit in front of your room with oceanview and there are loungers at the ocean to relax. The AC and refridgerator work perfectly. You can lend snorkeling equipment for free and there is a big beachtowel to use for every guest. You can reach everything on the island per foot, just 2 min away is a small supermarket, a restaurant, the diving school manta divers and a small souvenir shop. I will stay at Raakani Villas again, I was completly happy here.

We found this place via a booking site and travelling through Sri Lanka decided that we would like to finish off our trip with a couple of days kicking back on the Maldives. After we placed the booking we needed to get some assistance with the transfer from Malé and we contacted Ahid the General Manager of the Raakani Villas. Response was quick (within 12h I believe) and it was swiftly arranged. We were met at Malé airport and following a short wait were transfered to Guraidhoo. Ahid and his staff were waiting already at the jetty and we were welcomed with a nice drink. The accommodations are basic, clean and the location is the best on the island in terms if snorkeling and diving, excursions etc as the jetty with the boats is literally 30 seconds walk away. The rooms are equipped with a/c and own bathroom. It is to be said that the showers can give off an unpleasant smell from time to time, although the water itself doesn't make you smell bad. If you have a room on the first level all of them get an ocean view - although the balkonies are a shared space. The rooms below have a garden view. The beach is approx. 10 meters away. Upon request Ahid and his team will provide snorkeling gear free of charge and I believe there are also kayaks to be used. Ahid - the Man for everything - can organize all the tours and whatever you can think of also. The food is very good with their Sri Lankan chef creating great local dishes as well as other stuff. The island can be walked in roughly an hour (taking it easy). Bikini Island is a ten minute walk away with a very nice place to hang out. At this stage we feel we would like to point out the fact that this is an alcohol free island and we encourage everyone to take some time to get to meet the locals, they are great. There are a few shops and restaurant with fairly reasonable prices (e.g. a meal in one of the restaurants cost me ~ USD 10.00). There are one or two convenience stores as well as tourist shops with some nice local art stuff. The diving center is on the jetty and they were super nice guys there. I cannot comment on the quality of the dives as I only snorkel,, but apparently one of the top 10 dives on the Maldives is right here. I recommend to take the "Full Day Excursion" with snorkeling, Dolphins and Sand Bank Lunch. We got to Snorkel with Manta Rays (!) and turtles. Ahid the Man will provide all the details upon request. All in all this place is authentic and "real" and if you are looking for a rather favorable stay on the Maldives then this is he place to come. They will make you feel welcome and I will miss sitting on the beach with a drink watching the sunset (and of course enjoying the company of Lulu their local cat).

Trip on 27Feb-2Mar : Despite all the news, we (2 girls, Singapore, Chinese) decided to proceed with our flight but I change the Hotel from Male City to the Hulhumale Hotel nearer to the Airport, hotel pick-up transfer by car. 5D4N there they took care of us very well; receiving us at Pier 5, speedboat. Raakani (~2yrs old) : Clean room, nice bed & pillows; good house reef - Octopus/ eels/ puffer fish & many fish & healthy coral; helpful owner. One of the staff there is also very helpful and his effort in "wanting to learn & listen" to our need as trying his best on his English. Friendly Island. The flexibility exclusive arrangement for showing us what is Trolling, our tour for Dolphin watch, Spotting sharks, night fishing, Day & Night snorkeling, Island walk. If not because of last Nov Cebu trip learning that there are many parts of the world still using well water, "the very city us" will have made a big fuss/complain about the yellowish/salty tap water! It' just like our last Cebu island experience; realised/ learned that it's underground & well water. Small island, short walk & can swim on both side of the island, everyone knows everyone & are friendly, helpful people. Can see that Ahmed & his team is trying to put in their best effort for us. He also tag along to ensure everything run smoothly & safely. He even get an assistance with rescue certified (going on as a Dive Master Cert) to guide us in water. We like the flexibility of the arrangement for our day/night tour trip. Every trip we go, we will face hiccups, yet still acceptable by us in a certain way. We appreciate the help, the people we met, the things we learn. It's our first time to Maldives. And we will back soon to this place! This time round will be with dive trips!

Back to switzerland and missing very much Ahmed and his Raakani Villas! This guy is the key for a successful business because of him as a person. When we read the bad reviews in the past we were a little bid nervous to be honest. After a very interesting talk with Ahmed, the manager of the hotel, we finally understood the circumstances and reason for the fails in the past. Because of Ahmed`s absence because of dramatic circumstances with his family in Male, the vice manager that ran the hotel during the absence of ahmed was not able to manage the Place with the same heart and passion like Ahmed does. Of course that affected the stay of all people during that time. So we were lucky i guess that he was back and there for us=) If you`re not looking for expensive luxury vacations, if you like to walk through the island where only local people are living and enjoy their courtesy and unobtrusiveness, if you like to adjust your live style for a moment and see how it is to change what you are used to, if you except and respect their mentality and religion and don`t have a problem to wear clothes as a woman in the water for an example (except at the bikini island), if you don`t have a problem to drink only non alcoholic drinks, if you want to visit the very nice restaurants like the amore restaurant for an example where also the locals go, we, including our 8 years old boy guaranty you a wonderful and cheap vacation with lot`s of fun! The bikini island is made for tourists who want to swim with the bikini and is only a 10 minutes walk away from raakani Villas. it`s really worth it to go there too. the beach just in front of the raakani rooms is very nice and comfortable and placed at the perfect location on the island if we compare it with the other hotels we found when we walked trough the island. i have to say: Ahmed really read all our wished from our eyes and helped us with all we wanted during our stay. We felt freedom and happiness on this island and we definitely will return to this plays next time when visiting the maledives. If you are looking for a typical island which is only made and "created" for tourists who are looking for expensive luxury vacations this may not be the right island for you.

My wife and I decided to stay at the Raakanl based on the good reviews especially about the manager Ahmed. On our arrival we were informed that Ahmed could not be there because of extenuating circumstances regarding his family. The next 3 weeks was disastrous and the behaviour of the staff was disgusting. Not one of the staff could manage a good morning, the room was only cleaned every day after I threatened to move to another hotel and then I had to ask them to clean it. One of the staff played computer games all day and we were continually being asked for cigarettes. I later found out that the staff who worked for Ahmed were no longer working there. After 3 weeks Ahmed arrived and he lived up to his reviews and done everything in his power to make our last few memorable. The hotel itself has the best location on the island, the best snorkelling in the front of the hotel and the rooms are spacious and everything worked perfectly. I would stay there again if I know there is a change of staff and Ahmed is there.

Response from Ahmed S, Manager at Raakani Villas
Responded 10 Feb 2018
Dear Patrick First of all Thank you for taking a moment to share your experience to the travellers around the world. I am also very thankful for your patience all the while when you had to go through these bad experiences. I m really sorry that we couldn't live up to you expectation. There is no excuse to it !, Of course it was unfortunate that I was not able to be there to host you and manage the place. Infact from From mid July I had been away because of my family responsibilities. It was totally unforeseen beyond my control. Thus the management was handed over to new people and your are right in my absence my staffs left the place sadly. At the same new staffs were hired and the new management had done a terrible job I agree. But I am very glad that in your last couple of days I was finally able to come ( things in my life took a 360 degree turn- which was the reason I was able to come back) and serve you - at least give your some good memories to take with you. What ever I have done to compensate for the terrible time you spent in the hotel would not be sufficient to appease you . I understand. Hence we offered you a percentage of refund from what you paid to us and it was very kind of you to accept it. At that same time I appreciate for ranking us the best location on the island and indeed the house reef in front of our guest house provides guest free snorkelling any time they want. Once gain Thank you for your understanding . I don't regard this as a bad review. This is an honest review and guests should know about this. Now that I m back working here, we will try very hard to regain our reputation and build a trust in us again. kInd regards Ahmed

Guraidhoo is only about 30 minutes away from Male by speedboat and the hotel can help reserve a seat for you; I believe it costs 20usd each way. The guesthouse itself is run by locals and you can feel the love and care they have for the island. The guesthouse has one restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I had the Maldivian breakfast everyday, which was filling and delicious. They have a great outdoor patio at the front of the hotel which is perfect for sunset view. As well, they have some patio furniture in front of the house reef, which is where I loafed around in the morning after breakfast and before dinner to watch sunsets. They have snorkeling masks and fins for guests to borrow without charge. The lunch and dinners were tasty and affordable by Western standards. The room itself was spacious for those with big luggages and can be serviced upon request. In fact, the staff asked me daily if I wanted it to be serviced. They also provided fresh towels upon request. The bathroom is huge and toiletries are provided. In total I stayed for ~17 days at Raakani and truly fell in love with the people. The owner and his friends were the highlight of my trip! They went above and beyond to make sure I was taken care of all the time. They were able to arrange all sorts of excursions upon request and the guides were very professional and patient, especially in comparison to that of the other islands I went to. For future guests, please understand that this is a guesthouse on a local island, not a 4-star city hotel or a fancy resort. They try their best to make all guests happy and comfortable. If you go in with an open mind, you'll have an unforgettable time with the most amazing people!
