We booked three nights accommodation in order to visit relatives and to see some of the attractions in Kent. We have stayed here previously and enjoyed it. This stay was just as good. The accommodation is in comfortable cabins and meals are served in the pub itself. We had been warned at the time of booking that the meal service on Saturday evening was likely to be slow as they had a big party. It *was* a bit slow of course, but forewarned is forearmed. By comparison, service the rest of the time was exemplary. The evening meal menu board had attractive specials as well as the regular dishes. Breakfast is served efficiently, but feels wonderfully relaxed, with all the options you would expect. We will be back.

The food was nice, although it's a very poor selection for vegetarians as there is only one choice each in starters and mains. However, I've been several times with family and every time the service is incredibly slow. This visit was by far the worst. They made us book a very early table at 6.15pm as they said that was all they could accommodate for a party of 9 people. We didn't get starters for over an hour and then another hour later for mains and another 45mins before the desserts came out. There seemed to be plenty of serving staff, but they could do with a couple more chefs. We had to wait so long because the same chef makes the starters and desserts!!! Maybe train a server to add ice cream to a pre-prepared apple crumble. Overall, we were there for over 3 and half hours. Far too slow service.

From the moment you walk into The Black Horse you feel welcomed and well looked after. All the staff are lovely and over the countless times I’ve been feels like I’m going to see friends and were treated like friends, rather than just customers. One of the many things I love about going! We are frequent diners and visitor in the week as well as weekends. We have made our way around Kent pubs trying to find the perfect roast that tastes just like mums. I can honestly say The Black Horse ticks every box! They do the best pork belly and I’m so glad it’s made a come back to the menu. I’d like to thank Mikayla, the girls and boys for always making us feel so welcome and giving us top tier service 🤍

Great pub/restaurant/hotel, cleverly rebuilt/restored. The hotel rooms, laid out behind the pub are comfortable, the food at both the evening meal and breakfast was very good, and the owner and staff welcoming and helpful.

We stay here each year for our visit to the Vineyard and Winery Show at Detling Showground. It’s a traditional pub with real fire and leather furniture. Food and drinks are first class. The purpose built rooms provide a bed and breakfast accommodation with spotlessly clean bedrooms with en suite. Bedrooms are not very well sound insulated.

Terrible service and no real apology or explanation. Starters not ordered by waitress, then when the main was ready we were offered the starter to be brought out at the same time with the main. No one checked at any time if we would like another drink. Felt like we were just left and no care was taken.

Was looking forward to a family meal tonight. Table wasn’t ready when we got there, ordered our starters and our mains. Waited 25mins then waitress comes over and says your mains are ready. Yet we hadn’t even had our starters yet. The waitress said we can have our starters with our mains? Which we said no we want our starters then mains. She then came back and said the chef we not delay your mains so you can have your starters but then have to chose something else for main you won’t be able to have a roast as they are ready now. Disappointed and frustrated we decided to just have our mains. Roast was okay not the best. We decided to not have a dessert and go else where for dessert because the service had been so bad. The waitress did admit that she forgot to put the starters through the system but still that shouldn’t have happened.

This pub/restaurant I have visited over my lifetime since growing up in Maidstone. It is rustic, full of charm and a sense of a place dating back over 300 years. Food was good and for the first time, stayed overnight and the bed was extremely comfortable. However, at dinner the service was a little slow, cajun onion rings only tasted of deep fat frying and portion sizes on the small side. At breakfast, items put on plate after saying did not want them, mushroom was cold and fried bread only shattered when cut, so over cooked. Enough food available to not feel hungry but attention perhaps needs to be given to timing. I also feel the accommodation is a little overpriced even though location is superb for recreation and lovely views.
