The room we were put in was not the room that was advertised whatsoever. Unclean “Penthouse” with outdated carpet.. toilet was dirty, outlet in the middle of living room floor - you had to purchase wood to use the fireplace.. Dirty dishes in the dishwasher and in the cabinets - I called and asked to be put in a different room- and the lady Rosie never came to do so. Whilst checking out I asked for the manager and told him I was unhappy with my stay and the cleanliness of the room especially amidst COVID. It is a very sketchy place with rude staff- manager told me “It all ends with him” wouldn’t give me contact information to file a complaint. I was told I was being refunded then told I stayed in the room so I wasn’t getting one. Rosie the housekeeper at the front cursed me out in front of the manager and he did little about it . I was told I was not cursed at lol- what in the hell.. a travesty that this place is open. Very much Howard Johnson quality . Both of my kids and I have been running a temperature after staying there . Not happy at all.

This was the first hotel stay for our children. Maybe we got the crappiest room, because we booked through Hotwire, but I doubt it. Our room looked nothing like the photos the hotel provides, so it was a MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT. The hotwire price was great, but honestly, if we could've received a refund, we would've gladly paid double somewhere else, for peace of mind. If the hotel would post accurate photos for the room you MIGHT get, when the hotel gets to choose your room, we NEVER would've gambled Possibly getting this crap stay. #firstTimeBurnedThroughHotwire #NoWayThisIs3Stars

Overpriced and low quality. The hotel is run down and ill-maintained. There isn't a dresser in the room, but a closet with no hangers. Furnishings are tired. The lighting is very dim. The grounds are littered with trash. Front desk staff is friendly and helpful.

We had a late flight into Des Moines, our brother-in-law called the hotel early evening to let them know our flight would be late and we would be arriving at approximately 12:30am, the desk clerk stated it was no problem as someone would be at the front desk until 1:30 am, when we landed at midnight my husband called the hotel again to let them know we were on our way, he was told the same, no problem as long as we were there before 1:30 am. We arrived at the hotel at 12:40 am and the lobby door was locked, we stood outside and rang the doorbell, knocked and walked around the building for 20 minutes, nobody was there. With all our luggage and, exhausted from traveling, we found a Sheraton that was 10 minutes away from the Sterling that fortunately had rooms available. We returned the next day to the Sterling to check in for the remaining three nights of our reservation. The lady at the front desk was very helpful and assured us we wouldn’t be charged for the night we weren’t able to stay (booked through Expedia) on our way to our room there was a bag of trash in the pathway and beer cans and cigarette ends along the way. When we got to our room, we noticed rust stains on the front door, inside it was tidy but the door frame was split, there were stains on one of the pillows, a wooded toilet seat (total health hazard) and was generally very rundown, there was no way we could stay in the room. We went to the front desk and told them so, it was a different desk clerk than the morning but again, she was very helpful and gave us the name of the GM, Jose, who was off that day. We moved over to a Marriott for the remainder of our stay. I called the GM, Jose the next day and left several messages for him but he never returned my calls. When I eventually spoke to him the following day he stated we wouldn’t be charged and he had given us a ‘discount’ for the room, he didn’t seem to understand that reimbursing us for the nights we DIDN’T stay was not given us a discount! I asked him, as a courtesy, would he reimburse us for the night we stayed at the Sheraton, or at least pay the difference, he flat out said he would not. My husband called him next and was told he ‘wasn’t available’ same thing the following day, he was obviously avoiding us. I’m looking for their corporate office as I will not let this rest and do not want anyone else to go through a similar experience we did.

This place is a dive. We used to stay here several times a year until it got run down. Decided to give them a chance. Failure on their part. Room smelled musty, sticky substance on the dishwasher door, concrete in front of door has cob webs, dirt and dried grass clippings. Walked around the complex, cans and paper laying around. Where the hell is their maintenance at? They should be fired. Listen to others reviewers, DO NOT STAY HERE. Pool is listed on the website, but the usual COVID excuse as why it is closed, which you find out after you arrive. Of course, the manager will respond how sorry they are they didn’t meet expectations. How about fixing things that you know about from the reviews instead of false apologies. Time to fire the lazy people who are working here and get things fixed.

Do not ever stay at this hotel!!!! I never leave reviews but this is a must. My mistake was bypassing all the bad reviews before I booked this hotel. When we first arrived the rooms smelled unclean. I literally left and went to Walmart and purchased Lysol and frebreze and sprayed the room down so we would feel more comfortable. My husband did a walk around a noticed that the dishes in the cabinets were dirty and the wood on the floor was lifting. I looked it over because we were only staying for three days and didn’t really have plans on staying in the room that much. So I went back to Walmart and purchased dish soap and pads to scrub the dishes before we used them. Day two my three year old came running out the bathroom terrified saying it was a bug. When I went to the bathroom there was indeed a spider in the tub. One spider no big deal! Later that day I had to kill another spider crawling on the wall above my head while I was in the bed. Day three I noticed a dead roach in the window and after that it was a done deal for me! We ended up leaving way before check out time because I just couldn’t take it anymore. Two days after checkout I noticed a $60 charge on my debit card from the hotel. When I called to inquire a women by the name of Tyema stated that it was for damaged towels that had hair dye on them. That was a complete lie because my family nor myself used any type of hair dye. I called on June 29th and asked to speak to a manager and I kept getting the run around. I provided my email address and was told that an email of pictures would be sent to me. I kept calling because I never received the pictures. Every time I called I was told that the manager was in a meeting all day or he would not be in until the next day. I called the next day and was told that he would not be in until the next day again. I finally received an email on July 2 of pictures of stained towels that my family DID NOT DO! The email was even doctored to make it seem like I received it on June 27th when in fact I was never notified that my card would be charged for “so called” damaged linen. When I checked in there was a $40 hold placed on my card and I was told that if any damages happened to the room then the $40 would be applied. I was also told that house keeping would not be coming to clean the room until we checked out due to Covid. I have a family of four so you can imagine how many towels would build up over a three day period. So all the used towels were placed in the corner of the bathroom. The pictures that I received are numbered. The first picture that was taking was numbered 114448. The second picture was numbered 114503. The third picture was numbered 114513. As you can see the number of the pictures increase in the order that it was taking. Picture 114448 shows a bag of towels and sheets that are stained with something. If you have a bag outside full of sheets and towels shouldn’t that be the last picture that was taken? That means you’ve stripped the bed and removed everything from the room. In fact that was the first picture meaning it was a picture not from our room. The picture of the bed with the small juice stain in the corner was our room. If this sheets had that many stains on them why wasn’t the picture taking while the sheets were still on the bed? If you take a look at the pictures of the towels on the floor you don’t see any stains on them! I don’t know where that bag of stained towels and sheets came from but it wasn’t our room! When I finally spoke with the manager Jose he was very rude and kept saying the room was trashed. When we left I made sure all trashed was picked up and left in trash bags. The room wasn’t spotless clean but it wasn’t “trashed”. Where are the pictures of the so called trashed room? This hotel is pure trash and I will be contacting my bank to dispute the charges.

We have stayed here for a week at a time for years. The last stay was very bad with horrible service. We figured we would give them one more chance. Never again. We had to ask the front desk to look at 3 rooms just to find one almost acceptable to stay. The stove is filthy. We ran the dishwasher to wash the dishes because they were dirty. My daughter almost puked the dishwasher smelled so bad. The floor has an uncovered outlet that hurts like hell when you trip over it with bare feet. Their is no breakfast anymore. COVID is their excuse. Nice try we stayed at a different hotel earlier this year in Iowa that had bagged breakfast for guest. The top of the fridge says clean me in the dirt and dust on top. Their is a 2 story suite it is easily visible from the second floor. We asked for room service they said they won’t have any until the weekend. Their wasn’t even toilet paper in the bathrooms. I guess 1/4 roll of toilet paper we had for 2 bathrooms to share must have seemed ok to them. There are tree branches all over the parking lot. I had to clear a place to park. I will post a couple of pics but not wasting any more of my time.

This was the worst hotel experience I've ever had!!! We had reservations stating we could check in between 3 and 4 am we stood outside the hotel with locked doors ringing the doorbell and calling for 50 minutes trying to get in to get our room finally a ladies answered then tried to charge us an extra $24 for early check in even though our reservation clearly asked when we would like to check in and we selected between 3 and 4 am!! We aren't able to speak to a manager until 9 am the last at the desk would not give us a ph# for the manager or the corparite office she said she would have the manager contact us when he arrives at 9 am!! So finally we get into our room and there is old dried food on the stove top I get a coffee cup from the cabinet and it has a dried black chunk about an inch long of who knows what stuck inside the cup there is sugar spilled on the countertop the other counter top is literally black in spots from dirt that hasn't been cleaned the fire place doesn't work the lady at the desk was just flat ride this has been the worst hotel experience of my life time I wouldnt suggest this hotel to an enemy of mine I use to like staying here it says its under new management and you can definitely tell I give this place two thumbs down totally disapointed

Safe place, with good restaurants near this place. Affordable price, good cleanliness. You can choose which floor to stay, I suggest you to stay in the first floor, it's convienent for you to go outside and go back, nobody is watching you.

My family was coming home from Kentucky and thought the Des Moines area would be a nice stop. We should have kept driving. When we walked up to the room, there was garbage all over the ground outside our room, looked like it had been there awhile. When getting into our room, the door stuck a bit since the thresh hold was bowed up, we pushed in though. The carpet looked old and worn out, and the lighting was dark. The first time we flushed the toilet it nearly backed up, and no, we did not plug it. We left feeling as if nobody really cared about the upkeep of these units. Too bad, the area there seems kind of nice.
