We were in Chicago for a conference and enjoyed the location. Many things to do and places to eat within a short walk or Uber. The staff was helpful and the building historically preserved, especially the pool. The place was a fancy mens gym back in the day.
The Intercontinental never fails. Service, as always, was impeccable from the front desk to housekeeping. An easy walk to the Navy Pier, great Chicago restaurants and, of course, shopping. We will find it difficult to stay anywhere else in Chicago.
The experience with Intercontinental hotel was atrocious since we checked in. I reserved three rooms under my name through AAA for myself and two family/friends. They got there before me. I came in the next day but my name was gone. It turned out my guests paid for their rooms and the hotel put the rooms under one of my guest’s name because he used his IHG number. That was not the issue. The issue was we asked to change our reserved room to one in the lower level because of heights so we ended up in the worse room ever, on the third floor. I think the receptionist who “unwelcomed us” chose that for us or maybe his manager did. Directly across from our room on the floor 3, there was utility room closed and labeled “private”. There was an engine whirring loudly all night in that room—to a point even bathroom walls were shaking. It was late at night after walking all day in Chicago downtown so we didn’t want to call and complain then. That was not the only reason that kept us awake, though. The air conditioner vents where situated strategically to blast a freezing air directly to our heads while sleeping. We had to cover our heads with sheets to avoid the cold draft which made us sick the next day! As if this was not enough the bathtub faucet was leaking. Next morning we called the hotel manager. He suggested moving us to 7th floor then found a room in the fourth floor. It took a while so I spent my morning waiting and taking care of this issue wasting my vacation. I went down to the desk and explained the issues. I had done this the day before but that receptionist didn’t tell his superiors as promised. Receptionist gave me a room on 7the floor. There was less noise outside but no couch and it was an adjoining room with same venting system-may be not directed at our heads like before. All vents are the same in this building I found out. However, the sink faucet’s hot water handle needed a wrench to open it. We called for maintenance but we were definitely not happy, either, with this new room. It smells bad outside the room. My concern is the hotel downgraded the room to a worse level but we are still paying the same prime executive tower room rate! I am still in the hotel checking out tomorrow waiting if management will rectify these series of unfortunate events! Otherwise I will write another review in all boards and warn guests about this hotel.…
Exceptional service from the moment we walked in and greeted by Fredy at check-in. Very friendly and helpful young man, very professional. The room was excellent with a terrific downtown view. Very clean, well stocked, and comfortable. The hotel security was well designed. The hallways were quiet which lent itself to a peaceful sleep. Very well run restaurant and good pricing and very good dining. The valet service was great and quite quick. The hotel decor was très joli, well preserved for the building’s era and really gave the hotel a nice sophisticated feeling. Although we could not use the pool due to its periodic design, it was very nice as well as the full fitness center. Very pleased with this hotel and staff!
The service at this hotel is NOT to the standard expected at this price point. I will not stay here or any other IHG hotel again. There are much better options available within this price range. Very unprofessional
.... so why would I expect him to treat me any differently? I needed some help with directions and in the most condescending way said "I don't know, I don't live here"! I was shocked and disgusted at the same time. Lucky for me there was a guest behind me (who was equally put off) quickly offered to help me. Its too bad because pre-COVID this was the only place I would stay while in Chicago but will be looking for alternative accommodations next time.
I was so impressed with this hotel and its structure. It was so beautiful and the staff was very nice and responsive. My favorite feature of this hotel was the pool! This pool made me feel as if I stepped into the past. We had a live DJ and movie night in the pool area, didn’t expect that so it came as a pleasant surprise. Thank you for having us :)
When you come to this hotel, the staff is extremely friendly and the IC has a class about it. Some of the rooms have been redone and are very nice. I had a more weathered room but it was still amazingly comfortable. Elevators are fast which is very much appreciated. Will one of the doormen is a wonderfully nice man with a ton of knowledge if you need guidance.
I've stayed at the InterContinental many times over the years. This was my first post-pandemic visit. The hotel has an unbeatable location on Michigan Avenue right north of the river. Its nearest neighbors are the Tribune Tower and Wrigley Building. Combining the hotel's classic design with those two buildings gives a wonderful, enduring feel for classic Chicago. The InterContinental works well for business, leisure and meetings. The hotel offers a wide range of room sizes, which is nice for finding the right combination of price, space, view, and comfort. Having said all of that, the InterContinental needs a refresh--very soon I hope. The desk in my room was very worn from years of use. Only two of the electrical outlets worked in the bedroom, which is a challenge to charge electronics. It worked ok for me because I didn't have my family with me this time. Elsewhere in the building there were areas where a touch up of paint (or even a new paint job) would have been nice. I chalked that up to delayed maintenance due to the pandemic (but that would also have been a good time to make sure everything was top notch). Many of the carpets looked like they could use a replacement (or a least a very deep cleaning). Don't get me wrong--the InterContinental wasn't dirty or off putting. It just wasn't up the standards I remember for past visits. All in all I rated the hotel a 3--Average. If I could have give a half point more to a 3.5 I would have. Unfortunately, the hotel is not up to a 4 (or the 5 is could again be with some serious investment).…
This is a hotel from the 1920s that has been modernized in every way possible to make our stay delightful. From the valet taking our car, to the front desk everyone was friendly and courteous and efficient.
