Hotel's Favourite
Aqua Blu is a beautiful hotel successfully melding ultra-modern and industrial interior design in an iconic building close to everything downtown with great amenities and a good restaurant. It's starting to show small signs of wear and tear, like some signage a bit askew and a reading light on a bed's headboard that wouldn't stay on, but it remains my favorite hotel that I can afford to stay at.

Hotel still markets Executive Lounge rooms to customers and Radisson Rewards members, but lounge has not been open for a while, apparently. Also, next to lots of construction on Wacker, right alongside a Fire Department. Windows and doors not very noise proof, light switches in rooms confusing, and WiFi so slow it was easier to tether from phone.

I arrived early and was hoping to get into my room before an event. I was shocked to hear that there was a $75 early check in fee. WHAT? In 30+ years of staying in hotels I have NEVER been asked to pay to check in early. If the room has been ready, why not let someone in. It doesn't create any additional work to clean it later. I picked up food to go and ate it in my room. Didn't want to have the leftover food in my room overnight so brought the container down with me as I was leaving. No trash cans in the lobby but there was one by the valets. I excused myself as I reached behind the valet to drop the container in the trash. His response was, 'That will be $20!' Wow. After being taken for $75 to check in, this snide remark didn't go down very well. I had selected the hotel because they had a lap pool. Checked it out in the evening so I could do an early morning swim. Disappointed to show up at 6AM and discover that there were NO towels at the pool. I didn't have time to return to my room so returned to my room through the halls and on the elevator dripping wet. To add insult to injury, when I checked out I asked them to email my receipt. On top of the early check in fees there were $38 ADDITIONAL FEES. When I tried to respond to the email with my receipt attached, it bounced. "Vanessa Bryan" responded to my exit survey with a light apology and noted that she would let housekeeping know. When I responded to her, she had blocked my email. Good location. Nice room. But the overall experience was tainted from the get go. I gave 6/10 on hotels.com before discovering the additional fees and management's response to it.

I must say this hotel is like no other Radisson. This must be their boutique version. It was great in numerous ways. The rooms were fantastic, chic, modern. The lobby, decor and restaurant were equally great. The location is great as well. Further it was on the cheaper end. I would definitely stay here again.

Not ADA compliant at restaurants and bar, small room, and music so load difficult to think. Bill jumped from 576 to way over 800 for a 3 night stay! This is very disappointing. We had to get a remote since our room was missing it. Etc. etc. !!!!!!

I rated this hotel as a 4 but my stay was “good” vs. very good yet does not merit a 3 stars average so it’s between a 3 and a 4 (no option to do so unfortunately on TripAdvisor). I stayed there for 3 days on business in March 24. Note that this hotel is centrally located and access to Chicago downtown areas is very easy. Check-in was painful. I was attending an event where the organizers were covering 2 out of the three nights and the staff who was quite junior got confused and had issues checking me in. What should have been a 5 minutes check-in turned into 20 minutes or so. My room was great as I was fortunate to be on a higher floor on the opposite side of the main boulevard. Please note that the Hotel is literally adjacent to a fire station and others in my group reported how noisy it was at night with the sirens. So make sure to ask for a room away from the side of the fire station. My room was very comfortable and has everything I needed including a very good bed, space and cleanliness. I loved the gym; one of the largest I have seen with a baseball court and outdoor running track. It also had plenty of machines and a sauna and steam room next to it. Now why they did not have bottled water or filtered water for refillable cups and was beyond me; also no towels available which was a shame as the gym itself is amazing. The restaurant was great with a large selection of food and the bar staff knew how to make great cocktails. What bothered me the most was the inconsistency in friendliness and competencies from the staff: some like the bartenders & restaurant staff were amazing (friendly, smiling, pleasant and professional) while the reception staff was border line dismissive, non smiling and lacked skills I.e they forgot to tell me that housekeeping is on-demand or that check-out needs to be prompt without any grace period ($30 extra per hour overspent). It seems like some training, coaching and small fixes would largely improve the overall service at the hotel. Here are my recommendations: 1. Train new staff better to know how to handle the booking system and build training around emotional intelligence. First impressions are the most important so if the front line staff is not smiling or seemed bored to death then it will have a negative impact 2. Make housekeeping a standard SOP; we are not in COVID times anymore and the expectations are that the room needs to be cleaned daily unless of course customers indicate they don’t want to 3. Add a filtered water station at the gym vs. The low performing water fountain and make towels available. It gives an impression that the hotel is trying to reduce housekeeping or cleaning costs 4. Be up front about the check-in and check-out policies including late and early check in/out options 5. Communicate to customers that there is a fire station and it might be noisy at night if they end up on the wrong side of the hotel. Maybe offer a kit with noise cancelling options I think some or all of the changes suggested above would make for a much better experience.

Room Tip: Do not get a room by the fire station. The noise is horrendous from what my colleagues told me.

The overwhelming smell of weed everywhere we went in this hotel ruined all the other things we liked. The staff were more than helpful and kind. We arrived early and they got us in right away. As we walked to our room, there was a very strong odor of weed in the hallway. We tried another room up 1 floor. Same issue. We decided to leave for an hour and come back since we we didn't have any other options, and we smelled weed again up 9 floors from the second room. The smell seemed to come from the outside hallway / air vents / elevators as well as within the bathroom. I have to think that it's just how the HVAC system is set up, but we left at 10pm and did not sleep here. If the smell of weed wasn't there, everything would have been great. The photo of the bathroom online showed a tub for the smaller rooms and seemingly every room, which definitely isn't the case. Our room did not have a tub, which is misleading at best.

This was my 3rd stay at Radisson Blu Aqua and it was great. Hotel staff from Front to Housekeeping to Waiters at Firelake and doormen all were great! room was nice and quiet and views of Lake Michigan. Good customer services provided by front desk staff soon arrival and departure (2/5-2/8/24). Thanks to Aura, Matt & Jennifer and Housekeeping staff Bianca and I don’t have the names of two good waiters at Firelake and the singing chef but service was great and friendly and food was decent. I ordered room service for breakfast 2st morning, it arrived a later than I had requested for the young man delivering was so pleasant I didn’t even bother with raising the issue about time, simply because it was actually within about 30mins if my request don’t all worked out and the breakfast was satisfying. This has become my favorite hotel when in Chicago so far please keep the good work!
