Detailed Reviews

We stayed here for 3 nights on our first ever trip to Chicago. The hotel is nicely situated in the heart of the River North area, located near lots of restaurants, bars, shops, a 10min stroll to the river and around a 15min walk to the Lake and Beach area – so perfect location wise. The hotel lobby is luxurious, with complimentary water, tea, and coffee available. Check in was quick and we were directed to our room on the 15th floor where a bottle of wine and chocolates were waiting for us for being Expedia Gold members, what a nice touch, thank you!
The hotel has a gorgeous pool located on the top floor with an outdoor sundeck and viewing platform. The pool room was lovely and warm, with great views out over Chicago – the pool was sadly a little on the cool side and needed warming up a few degrees. This would also be the perfect place for a jacuzzi, but sadly there wasn’t one ;(
Our room was spacious, modern, and beautifully decorated with floor to ceiling windows and great views of Chicago down below. The bed was a huge king and very comfortable, with a large TV and desk area. There was a safe, but sadly no fridge/microwave but they do have ice machines on each floor. The bathroom was a good size, modern and very clean with a nice double shower – however this was probably the worst part of the room with peeling wallpaper which needed some renovation to bring it up to standard with the rest of the room.
The hotel was very quiet, and the rooms extremely well sound proofed from internal hotel noise. However, like most cities, Downtown Chicago is very loud, and the hotel is just down the road from a Fire station, so we needed to use our ear plugs to get a good night’s sleep.
During our stay, only one of the two elevators was working (for the entire 3-night stay!) – so there was often quite a long wait to get up to or down from your room which was a bit annoying. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the hotel. Sadly, the hotel charged a resort fee, which is confusing why they felt the need to charge this when most other hotels in Chicago don’t. However, when we worked out the cost of the hotel with the resort fee, it was still comparable to others of the same standard in the city, but this could put some people off. We really enjoyed our stay, and we couldn’t have asked for it to be in any better of a location as we were walking everywhere, and it was perfect for us. Highly recommend and we would consider staying again the next time we are in Chicago.

An easy early check in and a room with a little bit of a lake view made this a great two-night stay. The room and all public areas were very clean and well appointed and the location was centrally located to the Magnificent Mile, the Riverwalk, popular attractions like The Bean, several parks, and the lakefront. Restaurants a few blocks over on Clark Street gave us lots of delicious dining options.
All of the staff were extremely friendly and welcoming but Spiro was a stand-out! He bent over backwards to help us with things like a luggage hold and several cab requests. It really felt like a family member was looking out for us. The entire stay was an “A” but Spiro made it an “A+”.
The only thing I would change was the sliding bathroom door as it is VERY heavy. It was especially hard to close.
We would definitely stay here again!

This was my 2nd trip here (6mths apart) and it was just as great! We stayed in the Junior King Spa suite for 2 nights. We arrived early, our room was ready and clean. There was no valet on Friday, but the parking garage is very close. They even brought us out a cart to bring in our bags before parking. The rooms have a lot of great amenities: refrigerator, shampoo/conditioner/body wash, makeup removal wipes, they have, large walk in showers and large jacuzzi style bathtubs and they even give you bath salts. We had extra pillows in our closet as well as robes. We enjoyed the pool and it is lit up so beautifully, especially at night. It has a great view of the city. We were able to request a microwave and they put it in our room. The doors are very heavy and we didn't hear any noise from adjoining rooms or the hallway. The windows are from floor to ceiling which is abolutely stunning. The hotel is beautiful and close to so many great restaurants. There is also a 7-11 and a Subway restaurant right next door. The staff is absolutely amazing and the reason we stayed at the same hotel! Not just the desk staff. The valets, door greeters, cleaning team, security, they are all so nice, which is unfortunately a rare commodity these days in customer service. They honestly go above and beyond. We had the pleasure of meeting staff members Antwonne and Shaunda on several occasions and those 2 really brighten your day. We've stayed at many places in Chicago and this is by far the best in customer service that I've ever experienced.

I've stayed at the River North location on two different trips for 3 nights and 5 nights in 2023. Since then, it has been the first hotel try to reserve when staying overnight in downtown Chicago. Price determines whether I book or not as prices seem to fluctuate a lot!
Positives: great location (close to shopping, public transportation, great restaurants); indoor pool is nice for kids and family when it's not too busy (pool is on smaller side); nice terrace; decent gym; reasonably priced when I visited (but seems prices have risen quite a bit recently); in general, room and hotel is in newer condition; shower water pressure if okay
Negatives: poor quality, scratchy towels; bed sheets and blankets are low quality; beds are below average comfort (worse than most 3 star hotel beds)
In conclusion, if you can book for around two hundred per night (maybe three if the city is busy due to concerts or special events), it's worth it for the convenient location and newer rooms and facilities. However, I have noticed recently when looking for a place to book, prices are double or triple this which I personally would not pay. Overall, my stays there have been satisfactory. If you want something more luxurious though, look elsewhere as beds, sheets, towels, etc. are 2 of 5 stars.

Can't say enough good things about this hotel. Spiro goes above and beyond to make sure you're in good hands from the second you enter the premises. The front desk staff also is extremely accommodating. The mattresses are the most comfortable than any hotel I've stayed at. Can't wait to return to Chicago. Highly recommend this centrally located property.

My stay at The Royal Sonesta was a good time. Shout out to Antwonne for always making sure I had everything I possibly needed. If I needed something done he was the guy to speak to. Very nice to have him around.
Also, I walked into my room while house keeping was in there and the lady did her job very well on sanitizing the shower and bathtub.

I stayed at the hotel for 7 days, and I am so glad I picked this hotel.
First, the reception staff was always welcoming and cheerful, professional and helpful. Every time we entered the hotel, we were greeted with a smile and a kind word.
Then young lady who did my check-in was very kind in accommodating my request for a type of room.
Then the gentleman and lady who bring out coffee in the morning are genuinely service-minded and helpful.
The gentlemen who helps guests at the door, and specifically Antwonne were caring and efficient and because I was travelling alone before meeting a friend there, it gave me the impression that they were watching over us guests. I also had the opportunity to experience the professionalism and kindness of Lornell and Sophie, respectively Directors of security and Reception, who showed a great degree of support and help when I needed assistance, even though the need stemmed from a situation that was totally unrelated to the hotel.
Location is fantastic, a few feet from public transportation, lake and beach accessible by foot, shopping areas and downtown as well. Hotel is not completely renovated everywhere, but it is clean and well maintained. I would go back without hesitation.

I’ve stayed at many hotels in the city over the years and it has been quite some time since I’ve been wowed like this. The staff at Royal Sonesta River North is like a well oiled machine. The decor, amenities, room, lounge, staff, patio and pool all exceeded my expectations. Check-in was seamless and I was so grateful for Lucas providing us with a clean room and option to check-in at 11am for a reasonably small fee. He also came through with a sweet upgrade that was so cozy we extended to stay an additional night! Michael S at the front door is exactly who each company should recruit to be the face of their the organization. Kind, professional, courteous and possesses an attitude that shows he takes pride in showing up to work everyday…what a rarity! Opened doors, held bags after check-out, answered questions and assisted with logistics. I cannot speak to the food as we didn’t eat at the restaurant—still a little torn over the loss of Sable. If the food is anything like the service and decor I’m sure it’s top tier. My gf and I had an amazing time…already looking forward to my next stay I can say w confidence I will be back.

it was amazing, the attention was cool and Antwonne was amazing as well as the people in the reception.
