Hotel's Favourite
Spent 1 night here for a quick girl's overnight. We wanted somewhere that would feel special without breaking the bank, and Viceroy NAILED IT. Blink twice and you may miss the entrance to the hotel as it sits perfectly in a block with restaurants instead of being an obnoxious eyesore, but once you step inside prepare to be wowed! The lobby is beautiful and modern and feels fancy but not stuff. It feels special. (And smells heavenly!) The staff were warm and welcoming in what felt like a truly genuine and natural way. Like they love what they do, and they loved to be welcoming us!
The room itself was beautiful. Smaller than some of the big chains, but the giant windows (lake view!) and perfect furnishings totally made up for any lack of bonus space. Like the lobby, the rooms feel special. Fancy and NICE from the bedding to the lighting. Don't let the "smaller" scare you. I mean, yes.... If you have a toddler there's not much room for them to get the wiggles out. But for adults, it's totally fine. The space is used really well.
Oh, and the Bathroom! Large. Beautiful. FANTASTIC shower! And luxury shower products to real seal the deal.
I asked in advance - via email - to have a bottle of champagne in the room (and charged to me) since we were celebrating a birthday, and not only did they make it happen, but they left a birthday note and didn't charge me! That was unexpected and incredibly sweet of them!
GREAT location within walking distance to lots of dining and shopping, and just a few blocks from the river. PRO TIP: valet parking is available but hella expensive, so use the SpotHero app to find a lot nearby. We parked in a lot just across the street for, like $40.
Overall I am so happy we chose the Viceroy for our getaway as it was exactly what we were looking for, and what we needed, and I will ABSOLUTELY be back.
(Oh, definitely check out Velvet Taco next foor, home to a huge variety of delicious tacos and the best margarita I've ever had!)

My stay at the Viceroy was one to remember! This was such an eloquent hotel, with luxurious rooms, and accommodating staff! Upon arriving at the Viceroy for check-in I was swept away by the main lobby which has great detail/decor/art and was warmed by a fireplace, and hotel staff who were very friendly in their welcomes. The check in process was very easy.
--Due to COVID however, I will note that those who are not on your reservation will not be able to stay and they check all guests prior to entering the elevator. I was surprising my partner and so I did not think to add his name at the time I booked the reservation. The hotel staff allowed me to add his name to the reservation no problem and free of charge. The staff was very accommodating throughout my entire time at the hotel. That level of hospitality allowed for a comfortable stay which I appreciated.
When getting to my room for the first time I noticed that the room was 'sealed' (a seal on the door) noting that it had been sanitized and cleaned prior to my arrival. This gave me a peace of mind as I was bit nervous in staying in a hotel during COVID.
The room was beautiful, great views, and very comfortable! (I loved the bathroom the most lol the shower was so nice) I will absolutely be back! Thanks Viceroy!

Very clean and well decor hotel. Central to dining and shopping. Great tub and shower. Overall wonderful hotel with everything you need. Luxurious and great views of Lake Michigan.
I stayed during covid and the looting/riot in August 2020. Hotel has a ring security to see who is entering at night and they provide sanitizers/alcohol wipes. Front desk was well-dressed and receptionists had great manicures. If you appreciate design and small details, then stay at this hotel.

What an absolute disaster. From the minute we pulled up it started, no bell man or porters, freezing cold lugging our bags up to only one man at reception.
We checked in around 9pm and it’s taken us 3 hours just to get the tv working.
The bed is too soft and hard at the same time feeling the structure of the cheap mattress, the pillows are squishy and too soft and offer no support, the rooms are badly designed with even the basics being missed, the lighting control did not work, no room for luggage or storage, so much so that we had to get a chair removed from the room to fit our cases, no placement of switches, no fast easy way to boil a jug to make a cup of tea after a long day of travelling.
THE FOOD.. holy S**T! The absolute worst crap 💩 ever served and was sent back. 130 USD for a salmon dish and a roast chicken dish, fries an a side salad.
The salmon came as two tiny pieces COLD.. some little bits of cold cauliflower on some white bean paste, my partner who had the chicken couldn’t eat it, not a green thing on the plate, seriously a brown mass arrived in what can only be described as a pile of overcooked crap. The fries were also oily and over salted... the salad we requested to have dressing on the side, just as well as it came as a small bowl of beaten lettuce.
Honestly we had better food on United airlines on the flight here than this really bad hotel.
I would highly recommend not to stay here at all costs. It’s overpriced, badly designed, seriously bad food and I’m only just warming up...
the tv system is so complicated it took three people - all staff - trying to also work the tv system and also saying that it was very difficult... I was ready to rip the stupid thing off the wall and chuck it out the window - or literally throw something at it..
The wifi is rubbish, god only knows how anyone can do work here, can’t download anything, no movie channel, just a series of difficult screen options with the most ridiculous remote ever invented.
I wouldn’t even rate this place, the first thing we’re doing is getting out of here, the only thing I can day about this place that is any good is how the staff tried so hard to help us and also understood the frustrating and difficult basics that could not be accomplished.
When you travel a lot, all you want is a good room, good bed, good pillows, a decent meal, and watch a movie with a cup of tea.. all of these things were a difficulty. This hotel needs a reset button. Rating this place a capital F for FAIL. Staying here was a mistake, to endure staying here would be pure torture.
It’s just after midnight and this experience has been nothing but an obstacle course. Valentine’s Day ruined, and quite honestly, would have to be one of the worst hotel experiences of my life.

The hotel does not automatically tidy the room, make the bed and provide fresh linen you have to request it. And you only discover this cheapskate policy when you arrive back from dinner and are told it is "too late now". If you ask why it is not done automatically you first receive a blank expression and then are told "Covid": but no further explanation is available.
There is no breakfast dining room available during weekdays so if you don't fancy room service you must go out and find somewhere else to start off your day.
We thought this hotel would be a good base for our Chicago stay, and we looked forward to enjoying the promised ambiance, but it didn't turn out like that The staff weren't very welcoming, we were told the rooftop bar was closed and we never ever discovered where the entrance to the Somerset restaurant was although our initial experience of the hotel didn't give us much motivation to try very hard.
The only bright spot was the location and the car valet service but at $75 per night that ought to be expected.

I have stayed at several 5 star hotels in Chicago (Trump, Waldorf, Langham, Conrad) and the Viceroy doesn't make the cut. My stay was during Chicago's covid restrictions so my expectations were lower than previous trips. I understand that times are tough for the hotel industry now. However, I was not impressed with the service or accommodations.
The Bad:
1) As soon as I walked in the front door, the air freshener scent was overpowering. Waiting in the lobby for 5 minutes was about all I could take. Every time I walked in the front door or stepped out of the elevator, the smell was way too strong.
2) The room was small. The space between the TV cabinet and the bench at the foot of the bed was very narrow- uncomfortably close with 2 people in the room. The bathroom was spacious.
3) We called the front desk & requested ice. TWO HOURS later, the front desk called back and apologized for forgetting the ice & asked if we still wanted it. Not the service I expected from a 5 star.
4) Maid service was suspended due to covid. We didn't find this out until returning to our room late in the evening & needed fresh towels. I appreciate the Viceroy's commitment to keeping their guest/employees safe and understand the need to limit exposure . However, I would have appreciated being informed of this during check-in. Again, not the service I expected from a 5 star.
The Good:
1) This hotel is convenient to many restaurants, shopping & entertainment.
2) The hotel was very clean.

I stayed at the Viceroy in Chicago, thinking that I would be receiving the quality of service that Viceroy hotels are known for. The location of the Viceroy is exactly what I needed, so I was really hoping things would work out. Upon checking in I found that my room was infested with bugs. I notified the front desk and they treated the issue very nonchalantly. I informed the front desk again that there were bugs in the room and I was told that my room would be deep cleaned. The room was cleaned, but the bugs remained. The Viceroy hotel is certainly not taking precautions to sanitize their rooms because of the Covid pandemic, as most hotels out there are. When I spend the amount that the Viceroy is charging for a three night stay I am expecting my room to be clean and I certainly expect it to be insect free. If a clean room in Chicago is what you’re looking for I would avoid the Viceroy at all costs!

Our daughter had her wedding reception at the Viceroy and while the reception itself turned out fine, our experience with the hotel stay was less than happy. We booked the reception venue over year before the wedding and at that time the hotel and restaurant were part of the Boka Group. As such, we were looking forward to an outstanding dining experience for our guests. A couple months later Boka no longer was associated with the Viceroy. Due to the uncertainty with Covid and being able to have the wedding in the first place, we left the contract intact. Luckily Chicago opened up just in time to have the wedding we planned. A new representative took over and we met with her. At the tasting, the food was good but not Boka outstanding. No price adjustments was given just that we’d pay by the head instead of having to meet a minimum but it turned out much the same. Three days be the wedding, the representative that we met with and had all the specifics and details about the vendors was suddenly gone. My daughter spent the last course of days before her wedding trying to get a new representative up to speed and stressing when she should not have had this worry. In the end, the reception area was beautiful, largely due to the floral designer, and the food very good, although a couple of tables never received wedding cake.
Turning to the hotel stay, many guests booked rooms for several nights so a lot of money was brought to the hotel by our wedding weekend. Upon arrival only one of our two rooms was ready. My husband and and I cooled our heels in my 92 year old mother’s room for two hours after the surly reception desk agent had told us he’d “send housekeeping right up to get the room ready.” The hi tech TV, lights and phone are impossible for a 92 year old to operate. We ordered a pot of tea for my mom and it took 90 minutes to arrive. The empty pot, cup and tray sat outside her door the rest of the weekend- no one came to pick it up. The rooms are tiny. On Friday night we waited over an hour for a table at the rooftop bar, Deveroux, when multiple chaises and chairs were available. One of our guests ordered a glass of red wine and received approximately 1.5 Oz for $16.00. Everyone thought it was a tasting portion. Breakfast isn’t served in the restaurant on Sunday until 10 am but we couldn’t get a reservation until 10:45, which was way too late.
Overall the staff is rude and uncaring except for Antonio the valet and the bellmen. Samandra who was the assistant wedding representative was also attentive.

I have stayed in many hotels in downtown Chicago over the years, I stayed at The Viceroy during the worst winter storm of the year (2021) and going forward will never stay anywhere else on my visits and trips to the Chicago area. This is a true 5 Star boutique hotel experience. The location is the one of the best in the city. One block from Lakeshore, one block from Michigan Ave so the shopping, restaurants and neighborhoods are outstanding.
We booked one of their Grand King Lake View rooms and if you've ever stayed in Chicago you know how space in any hotel come at a premium. These rooms were beautifully decorated, the bathroom was enormous with heated floors, separate large soaking tub and rainhead shower and the views are some of the best in the city.
I cannot say enough about the staff, but Patrick made our stay outstanding. I will be only staying at The Viceroy going forward.

Dear Dennis T, Thank you for this fantastic feedback! We love to hear how much you loved your time with us and how well the team, especially Patrick, took care of you and made you feel right at home during a very cold Chicago winter storm. How wonderful to read how much you loved our rooms, bathrooms with heated floors and the design. We are all looking forward to welcome you back to Viceroy Chicago the next time you visit the Windy City! Nienke Oosting General Manager

Exceptional suite with a spacious feel and spectacular view. Room service is very helpful and speedy, and the mini bar and fridge are packed with a variety of options. A wonderful shower and bath area with gorgeous stone make the room extremely elegant and special.
