#43 of 220 in Chicago
Travellers' Choice
It doesn’t get more Chicago than this 1893 icon of old-world design and good cheer. Originally home to an elite men’s club, the Chicago Athletic Association hotel building is an architectural gem dating back to 1893. Converted to a boutique hotel and urban playground of the same name in 2015, the property sports 240 guest rooms, seven bars & restaurants, the city's first Topgolf Swing Suite, and a downtown location central to Millennium Park, Lake Michigan, The Loop, and more. The Chicago Athletic Association hotel offers an artfully-restored historic stay along with some of the city’s most-lauded dining and drinking outlets. This hotel has received the 2022 Tripadvisor's Travelers Choice Award for consistently earning great reviews and also ranks within the 10% of properties on Tripadvisor.

It's really hard to know where to start with how HORRIBLE of an experience it was to stay at this hotel. I'll try my best to summarize: - The bathroom is nice...about ends there. - The hotel's front desk requires you to take an elevator or stairs...so if you arrive via car with some bags, good luck. There was no one at the door, and no cart for bags etc. I had to go up to get check in, search for a cart, then come back to my car to start loading stuff. - The views from a majority of the rooms are absolutely terrible. So if you like looking at HVAC, this is the place for you! - The picture of the room is on a sunny day...so this is a great place to stay if you're batman or count dracula. Even with all lights on, we had to use our phone flashlights to find things...in the middle of the day. - When we got to the room, it was 74, and we turned the A/C on...well an hour later, it was 76 and kept climbing. I called. the front desk and they said "well this is an old hotel, unfortunately that's how it is." And they sent fans up...box fans. This is supposed to be a fancy 4 star hotel...and we used box fans. You can't even open windows for a breeze because you have no air flow. We were drenched in sweat all night. - Had to call Hyatt at midnight, have them cancel the second night and book me a night at a different hotel.

Hotel's Favourite
While I was in the bar in the Cherry Circle Room, another patron commented that this was the most beautiful hotel he had ever seen. Restored to it's 1894 glory, this former private men's club for the .01% is now available for anyone who wishes to visit the lobby and become a Gilded Age millionaire. The rooms are quirky, but in a fun way. A lot of the rooms are converted athletic courts, which means you might end up with a crazy high ceiling or an odd shape. But there's a lot of humor in the interior design, with gym netting above the desk and pommels at the end of the bed. CAA is an exercise in wit & style. Wry & ironic, they take their service seriously, but never themselves. My one suggestion is that in the mornings or when the hotel is quieter you might turn down the techno pop dance music, when the game room is hopping, but nobody's dancing at 7AM in Chicago, in January. :-) I'm already planning my next visit. Thank you for your amazing hotel!

Very clean and beautifully done. Each part of the decor is thought out and adds to the experience. The common areas have games and an historic feel but are clean and updated. Room service did not disappoint. I only wish I had more time to enjoy it all!

Great hotel in a good location. Very unique common areas with beautiful woodwork. Game room is pretty neat too. Rooms just a little small. Might be worth upgrading to the next size. Friendly staff. Must visit to rooftop bar. Would stay again!

Spent two nights here and enjoyed the superb location, able to walk everywhere! The restoration of the old building is exceptional and worthy of walking for a drink or burger just to look at the skillful and masterful way they honored the history but brought wonderful modern design touches to the spaces. The rooms are very comfortable and luxe. Mohair velvet curtains, Pendleton blankets, marble vanities and lovely black and white tiling in the baths. From the knowledgeable and friendly welcoming staff and check in to housekeeping, everyone was professional and made us feel valued. Breakfast was good and dinner one night was decent, but limited choices in the area we ate, as we didn't want to go to the Cherry Circle. Cindy's up on the roof is fun and the view is fantastic. Location is close enough to walk to the lake, the river (don't miss the Chicago Architectural Foundation Cruise!), the Art Institute, and of course Millennium Park. Lovely amenities and very comfortable beds, pillows and lovely linens.
