Detailed Reviews
We recently visited McRae for a funeral. My mother asked me specifically, if I would book our room at the Magnolia Inn. Her past experiences here were the main reason for her request. The person who took my reservation over the phone was courteous and friendly. I took this as a good sign.
We arrived late Thursday, December 13th (around 11:00pm). Tired and worn out, we were eager for check-in. My mother took care of this and indicated that there was no problem; however, when we went upstairs to our room (#33), the door would not open. We tried several different approaches with no success. I hurriedly went downstairs to retrieve the night management who followed me back upstairs to try the door. With very little maneuvering, he gained access. We were glad to get in and merely chalked it up to exhaustion on our parts.
The room was deplorable! My standards are high, but I have no problem making compromises, especially since we were deep in the country. With this instance, I was ready to leave as soon as we stepped in. The linens were in sad shape as was what little furniture was in the room (two up-right chairs and a table, a nightstand and a hutch where the very ancient television sat). The lighting was poor and the bathroom was scary. I am truly grateful our trip took place in the winter time. At least with the chill, I didn't have to worry about vermin scurrying across the floor.
The air-conditioning/heating unit drove us a bit batty as well. There were three of us in a room and we could never find a happy medium with the temperature. It was either too hot or too cold all the time.
The door continued to present problems for us. We finally figured out that turning the door knob in the opposite direction yielded results. Who knew?! In the harsh light of day, we also noticed that the outside was falling apart (in need of pant and repairs). Directly next to the hotel is a wooded area. It seems guests have taken to dumping their garbage there. It was awful! Amidst the beautiful Georgia pines were piles and piles of rubbish.
There was a refrigerator and old microwave (remember the turn-knob kind?) in our room, which was helpful. We also had cable and Wi-fi. If you're going to use the Wi-fi in your room, several people can't be on at the same time if you happen to have need of streaming or heavy internet usage. My sister watched Hulu in the room but had to do so once my mother and myself no longer needed to use the internet. Otherwise, she experienced choppy or no service.
Had she not prepaid, I would have asked my mother to change to a different location right away. There are other hotels in the area and Eastman (about 20 miles outside of McRae) had a couple of the bigger chains in their city. It would be worth it just to stay there.
It's too bad this location isn't what it once was. With some upgrades and TLC, it would really be a nice place to stay. My mother stated that she didn't recognize the management and was convinced that this was the primary reason for all the problems. Even if you have to spend a few more dollars, I highly recommend that you find somewhere else to stay.

Sorry about that title if you live in the area-the place is acceptable if you are passing through and need a place to stay. Nothing grand, so don't expect that. The room was clean, price was ok. I am told that the county imposes a ridiculously high special tax on motel rooms. We paid $14 county tax and a $5 Georgia tax, which was not the fault of the motel, but did bring our total cost higher than I had expected. Just a few nits to pick: Washcloths for shower were old and tattered-mine needed replacing. AC/heater was very loud and noisy in room 29. It might be better in other rooms. Towels were also old and rough. Parking was limited. TV was terrible. It appeared that there was no cable at all-just random chanels with odd numbers like 111.54. And there really needed to be some kind of guide to the tv in the room to help us out. Hot water was good. There were not enough pillows, and mine was rock hard, which I didn't enjoy. Check in was fine-the clerk was pleasant and competent. After all that rambling, it was ok for a small town off the beated path. Like I said, just don't expect a Hampton Inn.
Oh, and a really good restaurant next door. Apparently lots of locals eat there on Friday nights.

We were looking for a motel in a rural area and the people here were accommodating even at 2:30 am. The room was clean although a bit worn. That's the 4 star. There was a fridge and microwave which was nice. The office staff was friendly.

It was the dirtiest room I have ever been in, thank God I had sanitizer wipes in my car. I am a smoker, but I couldn't even stand the stinch in the room. Room did not look like it had been cleaned in months. It smelled better and was a lot cleaner when we left. We wouldn't walk barefoot in the room it was so bad.

This place is disgusting - do not stay here. My skin crawled from the moment I walked in and saw my mistake. Check in experience was bad, they didn't even have access to my reservation through the magnolia site. Again, pls do not stay here!!

Owner is exceptionally nice and understanding. Older hotel, but my room was very clean and smelled great. My stay was only night, but it was quite nice. They accommodated my needs with no problems. I received outstanding customer service by all. Thank you so much for all your kindness!

We went to McRae for our granddaughter's graduation. The room was nice and the desk clerk was courteous. The lobby did have a curry smell but it was not offensive. We did have a problem with the air conditioner but the desk clerk said she would have it checked. We will stay there again.

My husband, and daughter and I recently stayed here because we hadn't had power for a week.
It's only 6 miles from our house so it was a convent stop. I've heard it was not a good place to stay but honestly I was very happy. It's a bit outdated. But it was clean. Comfy. And served the purpose. It was our home for 4 days. The only bad thing was there wasn't free breakfast. And the guest upstairs had kids running and jumping til 2am. My 6 month old was woken many times. Other than that it was good. Would recommend for an overnight stay.

Passing through and needed a place to sleep for a few hours. The Magnolia Inn fit the bill. It was clean and quiet but a bit tired. We all (3 of us) slept well in different rooms, but there were reports of different hot water temps in the morning. Thankfully my room was fine. The service, even when checking in at 1 AM was good.

Sheriff brought me to this place so I could be safe overnight till I could arrange transportation out of town after a so-called friend left me stranded in town after driving her moving truck 10 hours to this state. Hotel clerk, named "Cookie" greeted the sheriff and I as she welcomed us. She was very accommodating given my situation and comforted me with her words and presence to give me at least a sense of "ease" as I was scarred and lost and left with a dead cell phone. She helped me to put a tragedy into something much better and put my mind to ease as we talked and she offered support. She was a great person and extremely nice. The rooms were average and could use more TLC as well as someone who took pride in their work, but it did the job and was clean. I had a pleasant experience, considering my situation. Restaurant next doors served up good food.
