Detailed Reviews
We stayed in the Turtle building at the back of the property; Room T-2 (2-story near canal). Very old school looking. The motel is literally next door to the Marathon airport...planes flew directly above our room prior to landing. It was a very cool view from the deck outside our room. All that to say it was quiet. I did not notice any noise from the planes when we were sleeping. The beds were some of the most comfortable I have ever slept on. The room was small and recently updated (not the best workmanship). It was however clean and cheap. Lighting was not the best inside the room, but it was adequate.
The deck was awesome for viewing the sunset. New deck chairs and a small table are there to enjoy. There were additional deck chairs next to the canal. My husband and daughter saw a manatee in the first five minutes we were there. We saw other guests using the free paddle boards, kayaks, and bikes. Unfortunately, we did not have time in our schedule to enjoy them. I was told you leave your room key at the front desk and you get it back when you return the items. Extra towels need to be requested during office hours (8am-10pm). I don't think they were servicing rooms until checkout due to COVID. We were there two nights and would stay again. It is an hour drive to Key West and the total for two nights including taxes was $302. That is less than one night at the cheapest hotel in Key West. A grab and go breakfast was included (oatmeal cup. granola bar, muffin, apple juice, and an orange). FYI...there is a hair dryer in the room. I didn't see it listed on the website. Call the hotel directly for a better rate than the online booking sites.

This was a great place. They have retained the old school charm on the exterior, but have updated the rooms and amenities. The grounds and pool area are attractive and well maintained, and although we never used them there are bicycles and kayaks available to use. Our room was an adequate size with a very large en suite bathroom with a walk in shower and good AC. Comfortable bed, okay pillows (personal preference) and a couple of Adirondack chairs and a small side table to sit on the balcony outside the room and enjoy a drink or coffee. There are some shortcomings but nothing terribly important - another chair in the room to sit on, some place to sit things alongside the pedestal sink in the bathroom and such. Breakfast was a bit of a challenge as the space is very limited and there was a bit of a traffic jam as people made their way through - selection and variety of breakfast items was decent though and coffee was very good.

We stayed here for 4 nights in a king bed room. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating, and the amenities were great. They have free kayak, bike, and fishing pole rentals, as well as a pool and 2 grills, and free breakfast. The room was large and the bathroom was nice as well. Our only complaint is the WiFi was very spotty, even though we were right next to the office. The price was also very reasonable compared to other places nearby that did not offer the amount of free amenities. The location is also great, being an hour drive from Key west and within 20-30 min of other notable attractions. Would recommend for anyone who isn’t going to spend too much time in their room and wants to experience the Keys.

Unfortunately the Florida Keys are expensive to stay wherever you choose, but we thought we'd hang our hats in Marathon for a couple of nights to visit Key west in the intervening day. Basically a good idea, since accommodation in Key West itself is horrifically expensive, especially if you book a little late as we did.
However, the Coconut Cay room still cost almost £300 for those 2 nights, but fell far below the standard you'd expect for that sort of money. The room was large enough but dimly lit (bedside lights only), with no carpet or rugs on a cold tiled floor, apalling Wifi that kept cutting out, a very noisy aircon unit and a general feeling of shabbiness and grubby decor. The bed was large and comfortable enough and the shower worked OK, but the bathroom walls (being the only area well lit enough to see) were basically grubby and tired, and the whole room felt down at heel.
Staff were friendly and helpful enough and, because we were making an early start to Key West and 'breakfast' wouldn't have been available until 08:00, allowed us to take some breakfast to our room the night before. This was possible because it was all pre-packaged - breakfast burgers (tasted very processed), plastic-potted cereal, sugary cakes in cellophane, some fruit, milk and yoghurt, styrofoam cups and plastic cutlery. However, there was no coffee making facilities in the room, so the best we could do was to heat water in eth microwave for tea.

Nice stay. We were in the T or Turtle building. The room was nice and clean, had two full beds, a rocking chair, microwave, fridge. There’s a porch/balcony area with two beach chairs and a little table. We enjoyed a meal out there. We didn’t bring the boat down this time but see that there’s great boat parking/docking. No beach/beach access—just canal access to open waters.
The grab-and-go breakfast wasn’t bad either. There was a slice of banana bread, an oatmeal kit, yogurt, an orange and apple juice, packaged in a gallon ziplock bag. We even recycled the ziplock bags to bag up some of our catch ;)
Next time we might request a room facing the canal and dock the boat right behind our room. The canal rooms have a back porch with a picnic table, rather than the balcony as on the two-story buildings. That seems it’d offer some additional privacy and a view of the canal. We spotted a couple snappers, grunts, needlefish and a snook out in the canal.
There is a little laundry area, a pool and some outdoor seating spots. We didn’t see an ice machine though.
Be aware of resort fees ($7/night) and “bed tax”??? (5%/night) on top of the nightly room rate and sales tax.
The only issues we had—and those were minor—is initially there were no washcloths, hand/body soap, and only a third of a roll of TP. Those were rectified over the next day or two. There were also some (apparently) extended stay guests—some of whom were interesting to say the least and a bit more engaging than we would have sought out. Including a couple who was fighting in the middle of the night causing a bit of a disturbance (and some drama the next night out by the canal). But overall, great stay. We’ll likely go back with the boat.

Stayed here with another couple and their teenage son. We had a kitchenette canal view room. We put a twin air mattress in the kitchenette area and had plenty of room.
Pros: quiet place
Good value
Large rooms
Right on the canal so we could leave the boat all week
Manatees in the canal
Cons: no smoke alarm. Maybe it was grandfathered in? Maybe it was hidden?
Front door was an interior foam door and there were some repairs? to the frame. Not sure if it was from an attempted break in or just really bad repairs.
You will get one small bag of ice per day, about enough for two or three drinks.
Breakfast was a ziploc bag of yogurt, fruit, pastry.

We stayed at Coconut Cay from 3/28/2021 - 3/31/2021. We were supposed to get a waterfront room. When we got there we were told the only waterfront room was only available for one night and we would have to move after one night. So they gave us a room on the 2nd floor up 3 flights of stairs, NOT WATERFRONT.
We were supposed to pay $90 per night. When I booked it on the phone I told them we had 2 small dogs. They did not tell me there was an extra one-time $75 pet charge. After all the extra charges our room averaged over $200 per night. We could have got a lot nicer hotel for that price.
The rooms were pretty clean, but there seemed to be small pieces of trash around the resort when we got there and still there when we left, (other than the ones we picked up.)
They do have free kayaks and bikes available. There is a small pool. Even though it is close to the airport, the room was pretty quiet.
Because of Covid, breakfast was instant oatmeal, fruit, juice, yogurt, and bread in a bag to take back to your room.

Totally didn't know what to expect. The room which was clean and functional was great for our needs. Breakfast was a nice baggie of items that we didn't expect given it was covid. Our towels were replenished daily. The staff for the most part was very friendly. There was one lady at the reception desk that was quite gruff bordering on rude. But, the rest of the staff was great. The pool was ok. It was dirty the whole and needed leaves vacuumed the entire length of our stay over 4 days. It was great that you could use the kayaks and bikes which we didn't. The only unfortunate part of the stay was the "resort" fee that we were charged at check out that was not disclosed anywhere upon booking, check in or our stay until we checked out. That was rather frustrating. You shouldn't have to pay a resort fee for an older dirty pool and if you are going to charge a resort fee, maybe just charge to rent the kayak or the bikes instead. They say it is "like it used to be". Well, you didn't used to pay a separate resort fee because it was included in the stay cost. We did enjoy it and would stay again if we were in one of the three two story buildings. Can't speak for the single floor units.

I stayed her for 2 nights and loved it. The room was clean and colourful and overlooked the canal. The pet fee of $75/stay was a bit high but otherwise the rates were great for the quality of the accommodations. The only negative is that it is the flight path of the airport and was a bit noisy at times, but mostly quiet at night as I think it's only open sunrise to sunset. I will be back!

All hotels in the keys are expensive, but this one not only saved us a few dollars but was a great place. We stayed in the newer section and the room was very big, clean and comfortable. The hotel offers free kayaks for the canal the runs on the back side of property and has several fish cleaning stations. The breakfast area was a bit small but had everything you would expect for a continental breakfast.

Yes the pool is open and available for use. Very clean
Don’t stay there. It is filthy. The staff is terribly rude and they over charged by nearly double. They try to lure you in with fake photos and good reviews from people they pay then trap you there with a forfeit clause in a weird contract they make you sign before you see the room. It will ruin your vacation!
