The resort is beautiful with the landscaping and the scenery! The staff is so nice and a lot of times they open the door for you. The rooms were modern and very nice too. Although in our hotel room bathroom, the grout and corners had not been cleaned and were dirty. When we came in the room the carpet between the bed had not been vacuumed and had crumbs on it. The A/C unit was loud if you used the outdoor tiny deck included in the room making it not as enjoyable to sit outside our room. The beds are very comfy and they get made everyday by house keeping and they pull the sheets super tight which shows that the sheets are high quality. If you don't use valet parking, the parking spots for hotel guests are not often open. Most of the time we had to park in the employee lot which was not very far. Also there is no breakfast included unless you go to the marketplace by the pool but the prices are high. Marathon Key is about 10 miles from Hawks Cay and had many fun little diners.

We were very excited to visit Hawks Cay for Christmas with family. Their website showed a great location, lots of activities and lovely villas. It should have been a perfect vacation but unfortunately it was not.

We were greeted warmly upon our arrival, told where we could locate our villa, handed a map and sent on our way. Our villa in Marina village was clean but pretty tired looking. It was then that we discovered the first problem: We had booked a villa with 2 twin beds in one room (for our 16 and 19 y/o), and a queen in the other. We got a double and a queen. When I called to see if we could rectify the situation, I was given options that didn't even make sense for 4 adult sized people, so we decided to make the most of it. My oldest daughter decided she could take the fold out but when we went looking for bedding, none was to be found. She had to call twice to get bedding. The first time they delivered 20 pillow cases. It was very late and she was very tired by the time we were able to get the bed made.

The next day we tried to be positive as we set out on a fishing trip (which was excellent, despite some rough seas). We returned and discovered that the TV on the main floor didn't work. Not a huge deal b/c we didn't expect to spend a lot of time in the room, except then the weather turned and sitting by the pool wasn't a viable option. It was at this time we discovered that the wifi was spotty at best and even if we tried to buy the premium wifi it wouldn't process. We tried calling the front desk for help and got nothing.

The 3rd day, Christmas morning, we were having breakfast at our villa with our family. Perhaps we should have looked a little more thoroughly the night before b/c we discovered it was woefully unequipped. No pot holders, or real cooking utensils, a couple of skillets and a pot, but hey! There were two microwaves, for whatever reason. We managed to make it work, mainly because some else brought disposable plates/cups/silverware and some towels that could double as pot holders.

We had a toilet that clogged (and was fixed) and the last night we were there the ceiling started leaking from one of the bathrooms above. It was pretty clear it wasn't the first time and based on what I saw, I doubt it will be the last. It just doesn't seem like maintenance in the villas is a priority.

The pool area was nice and the lagoon was pretty cool. The food was good at Prime 61 and Angler and Ale but unremarkable from the Tiki Hut, despite interesting sounding menu items.

We had high expectations which seemed warranted considering we were paying almost $1000/night with fees. We do not feel like we got our money's worth and will not be returning to Hawks Cay, and wouldn't really recommend it to anyone else.

I’m writing this review for the sanctuary townhouses which rent for upwards of $1000. If you’re staying at one of the hotel rooms for under $200, go for it by all means, it’s a great deal. Nothing in the resort look like the pictures. Really, nothing, which should not be allowed. Sanctuary townhouses are very old and bare. Kitchen cabinets were empty when we arrived, we had 4 glasses, were a group of 8, planning on feeding the kids breakfast at least. There are pictures is a real pool which is private, the pool is the size of a hot tub. Again, dining for 4, one small table and 4 chairs, the house is supposed to accommodate up to 10. It’s VERY crowded in the common areas, you can’t get a lounge chair by the beach or pool if you’re not up laying towels by 7am. Oh and we got strawberry lemonade for the kids, they all drank it until one said it tastes weird. They all had vodka in them. When I went back to the bartender, I got schooled, I was supposed to say non-alcoholic while ordering lemonade! He charged me for another round. Good luck!

We just left Hawks Kay Resort (8/23) where we have been multiple times including holiday weekends, and were very disappointed with the overall service and accommodations. We (six adults) were celebrating two milestone birthdays, our sons dual Masters Graduation, and his planned engagement event and we specifically chose HKR as the place to celebrate them all based on our previous visits.

We typically don’t send negative comments or remarks on facilities with “island service” as we know things are at a slower pace. However, if your resort is the prominent winner of the USA Today Top Family Friendly Resorts, then the service should match it at all times– and at this resort, this week, it did not.

We checked-in on Wednesday at 12:30 and were told by the front desk Guest Services agent the resort was only at 40% occupancy – it still took until 3:00 before our cottage was ready. The cottage (3 bedroom unit) we stayed in was in poor condition (all light fixtures had 1 or 2 of the 3 bulbs burned out, a dried-up dead roach in the main bathroom covered in ants, main living room furniture was past worn and soiled, and the glass sliding doors to the deck were hard to open/close). The rental unit was far from what we expected as HKR quality, and lacked the upgraded look of the two units on either side of us.

We had to place six separate phone calls (three times with no answer after allowing the phone to ring for 3+ mins) to get ahold of Guest Services to request clean towels and dishwasher detergent on our second day – took 6 hrs to get them delivered (glad we didn’t have an emergency and need help). The main family pool was unexpectantly closed for “Maintenance” (no fault of the resort, and they made every attempt to get it cleaned and back open) guests were all directed to the adult only pool, and HKR Mgmt made no effort to open the bar by the adult pool or provide any pool side bar/food service. Several servers told us they were understaffed. On Friday we were told by a HKR Guest Service agent they were at almost full capacity but very limited on staff do to COVID, and the parking lot and pool areas confirmed the resorts high occupancy.

We started our vacation at the new Isla Bella resort, then moved up to Cheeca Lodge for a few nights, with the intent of ending the important week at HKR. Spending several days telling our guests what a beautiful and classy resort HKR was going to be – we were embarrassed and disappointed throughout our four day stay. If you are planning on Selling 0ut your full resort, then it better be staffed accordingly – from check-in, both bars open, and guest service requests. There are too many other high priced/average service resorts in the Middle keys to go to, we wont be back to HKR anytime soon.

Our family of 7 rented a villa on the lagoon at Hawks Cay for a week in early April.
The place was overcrowded with lots of families. This did not allow for any social distancing or space for anyone. They required masks only in the Main Building and restaurants.

The also have a system of allowing people to leave towels on chairs at the pool and beach area as early as 7 AM. At 7:30 they were all filled, some groups of 7-9 reserved at once. We were told that if no one showed up within an hour to claim the chairs the towels would be taken off. That didn’t happen once during our stay. Definitely not an equitable situation.

Our biggest complaint is the condition of our villa. Each one is individually owned and the owners furnish it themselves. We were told that the villas were inspected regularly and if they didn’t meet the resort standards they would be taken out of the rental market.
We paid $12,000 for a 3 bedroom unit that didn’t have a dresser, closet or any furniture in one of the bedrooms. This was required. There was paint peeling on the ceiling of one of the showers and in other areas. Several of the sinks had rust spots around the drain. The caulking and paint in all of the bedrooms needed to be redone. There were stains on the couch. On one wall in the sitting area there was a wall with 3 holes in it. Obviously at one time there was something hanging there at one time

The kitchen was furnished with 8 of everything. The unit was supposed to sleep 10. There were only 2 little pots and one small frying pan. I know you are supposed to eat out, but we didn’t every night. We had to ask repeatedly for a pot big enough to cook pasta. At first we were told the resort didn’t furnish them. We could go to the dollar store. After several conversations up the chain of command one was brought to us.

This unit definitely needs to be renovated and brought into some sort of standard. Looking on VRBO there were many units renting for much less that were very luxurious.

Not worth the $12,000 plus fees that we paid.

Had a great 4 night stay at Hawks Cay. I had been here three years ago. Stayed in sunset villa with two adults and two teenagers (4 total). I’ve read a lot of complaints about the sunset villas here but ours was beautiful with two full baths and a half bath downstairs. Definitely renovated nicely. Great sunset views on both levels (yes you do stare at the marina building but you can take a short walk down the path for an unobstructed sunset view). Rooms are small; we had two queen beds (not great quality BTW) so one kid ended up on the downstairs sofa bed no big deal. The resort is beautiful albeit very crowded by the resort pool. All chairs taken and reserved by 8:00 am (full “chair wars” in effect here so you get up by 7 am to stake your space). Really appreciated the early check in we received. Definitely try to hit grocery store before arriving or you are driving 20 mins to marathon. They used to have a great store at the marina but it’s shut down now and the grab and go was sparse and expensive. What keeps this place from 5 stars is a stunning lack of value. Virgin pina coladas @ $14. Margaritas @ $21. Add poolside lunch for four and you are up to $200 per lunch. Same with dinner—angler & ale is good (quality of service varied a bit) but really pricey for what you receive. We also did not receive maid service in our villla for any of the days we were there although towels were replaced on request and trash emptied. I think Hawks Cay generally has a great thing going; guests and staff are friendly and the place is well maintained and the vibe is low key—little things like keeping the pool open for night swimming make it a very fun place for a relatively accessible family vacation. Just keep an eye on the incidental charges which add up very quickly.

On a positive note, the property and hotel are very beautiful. We came right as the quarantine was being lifted. When I started my stay, the resort was only allowed to book at 50% capacity. That was on a Wednesday. By Friday, it appeared the hotel was booking at full capacity, which is fine, but it seemed all precautions for COVID-19 went out the window. I understand needing to recoup money lost during the quarantine but it seemed that the hotel was missing half its staff still and it’s only priority was bringing in as much money as possible. The website did a nice job of outlining all of the things being done to prevent the spread of the virus, however it felt that none of these things were really being done, as there were too many guests and not enough staff. Lines to order a burger and a drink were over 30 minutes long, with one bartender and 2 waiters for the entire resort. Sadly on the first day there weren’t even any paper menus, which resulted in all guests passing around 1 dirty paper menu. I didn’t see anyone wiping tables in between guests eating indoors or outdoors. No wiping of chairs in between guests. No one was wiping door handles down or doing these things that so many other places are doing well to keep staff and guests safe. The staff seemed extremely overworked. They had masks on, yes, but it almost seemed torturous to have them wearing those masks in the Florida heat trying to serve 10x more people than they should’ve been. I felt bad for them. I just am very shocked that there was no one cleaning rooms or anything but they could not repurpose these staff members to maintain a clean space for everyone. No tables or pool chairs were blocked off to maintain space between people. Overall, I think during this virus the resort management needs to do a better job of planning and keeping guests and staff safe. If you cannot keep it safe for full capacity, then consider keeping it at 50% capacity with a limited staff. Don’t cram people in their like sardines and then cut your staff. If anything, during this virus, there really should be more staff working to keep things clean.

During these troubled times we all need to increase our level tolerance, but some things still need to be called out.

For starters, the location is very kid friendly and we may consider returning with our children Under different conditions.

Bait and switch : When booking I explained we were coming for our tenth anniversary and were looking for a hotel with a spa and room service. The sales agent assured us that all the restaurants were open and the spa had massages available.

The spa was closed , the sit down restaurant in the hotel “prime” was closed except for Monday and Tuesday (can’t begin to fathom that choice ) and no room service .

But hey, it’s Covid 2020 and you need to roll with punches.

There was a market open that you could get a $12 Classic breakfast that was absolutely horrible . Expensive breakfast eggs are expected at hotels, but not dry eggs nasty Sausages and soggy cold hash browns .

However the angler and ale had a excellent whole fried yellow tail for $32 .

Overall the resort is appealing , has an extremely kid friendly pool. If they hadn’t pulled a game with the hotel billing I would have been more understanding.

Our room and resort fees at Check-in was $1238 for two nights in a standard king with water front view on second floor . I questioned what happened to the pricing since when we booked the rooms were priced at $417 due to its holiday weekend , and in addition. We were receiving a 25% discount for being fla residents (there was also an option for 15% discount plus $100 ). And there is a $45 per person per day resort fee.

But still the math didn’t add up, and when we asked the Check-in for an explanation there was none . After a few minutes of my wife telling me to let it go I did . But beware of their funny accounting.

We just got back from a 6 night’s stay at Hawks Cay. We were originally scheduled to go Spring break, but had to reschedule due to Covid. First, I tried calling before we got there to get info on what was closed, but could never get anyone on the phone. Then, we arrived at checkin on Monday 6/23 and had to wait 45 minutes in line to check in!!!! No discounts were offered due to the numerous closings on the resort. The attendant gave me no info on anything! They are extremely understaffed right now at both the main hotel and the restaurants on property. We stayed at the Sunset Villas that we booked through the resort and we never received towel service or trash service although the front desk was called and requested.
The setting is beautiful!!! This resort definitely has that going for it and Angler and Ale did a great job cooking up the fish we caught on our trip. Don’t bother going into the Marketplace. We tried to eat there for dinner one night. All 4 adults ( 2 different families) ordered “bowls” with either chicken or steak. They were supposed to be hot and have quinoa and other veggies. Instead we received left-over meat on a salad that was inedible!!!
We will definitely come back to the area, but not the resort. Way overpriced for the lackluster service, amenities and food. The other family that came down with us has similar experiences and heard others on the resort complaining of the same. I know that times are hard with Covid, but IMO, if they weren’t so understaffed and so much closed, it would be a safer and more enjoyable place to visit.

There are plenty of chairs along the poolside area. The bar and food area are near that too. We didn't feel the need to purchase one.
