Offering warm and welcoming accommodation, an open-air restaurant, a gift shop, and a one-of-a-kind wedding and events venue, Mount Meru Game Lodge is set in beautiful and tranquil surroundings nestled between the Usa river and the Sanctuary. The Sanctuary is home to water buffalo, birds and monkeys, including the elusive Colobus monkey. Conveniently located just 30 minutes from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), the Lodge is an ideal starting point for your safari. The Lodge and Sanctuary date back to 1959 when Dr Andreas Von Nagy bought the property as a family home. The main building dates back to the 1930s and was originally the farm manager's house. In the first half of the 1900s most of the area on the southern slopes of Mount Meru was coffee plantations. Dr Von Nagy was passionate about animals and he quickly turned his family home into an animal sanctuary and orphanage. He set up the Mount Meru Wildlife Reserve in order to protect the wildlife on Mount Meru, what is now part of Arusha National Park. He also helped the government to establish the Wildlife College and used his animal sanctuary and orphanage as a training facility for the students. His home and passion attracted visitors from far and wide, rooms were added to accommodate his visitors and the Lodge was born. The Lodge is one of the oldest lodges in northern Tanzania. Great effort has been made to keep the Lodge as original as possible while at the same time offering some of the modern-day comforts. The Lodge has grown in popularity over the years and our visitors have included numerous presidents as well as members of European Royal families. When Dr Von Nagy retired in the 1980s, the animal orphanage stopped taking on orphaned animals. The Mount Meru Game Lodge remains in family hands till today and the family look forward to offering you a memorable experience during your stay in Arusha.

We enjoyed 3 lovely nights at the lodge at the end of 3 weeks in Tanzania. It was like the icing on the cake. The grounds are peaceful, butterflies everywhere and so nice to watch the animals in the dam and in the trees. Harry & Kim are the new owners and are making upgrades and repairs though it is already such a pleasant place. They are really friendly and took time to chat with us and find out about our life and how they could make our stay better. My mum was unwell and they allowed us a late afternoon check-out on our last day to make our life easier. You could not find nicer staff. From Housekeepers & gardeners to waitpersons & reception staff they only want to make your day better and who go out of their way to be kind and friendly. The rooms can be a little on the warm side but Harry & Kim are looking at ways to improve this in a way that does not negatively impact the ecology.. you have to respect that. Thank you

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Mount Meru Game Lodge. The staff were so friendly and they are incredible with children. I got to sleep in some mornings as my children would happily head to breakfast by themselves - I would eventually join them and enjoy a delicious cup of Kilimanjaro Coffee ( Which I couldn't resist purchasing some beans from the lodge's shop to take back home) We also enjoyed the variety of food and the great vegetarian options. The restaurant has a view of the watering hole with the Water Buffalo and Zonkeys (a Donkey and Zebra mix) in clear sight. Whilst a variety of monkeys play in the trees above. There are a few day trips one can take from the lodge. We chose to go to the Arusha National park which was a wonderful experience. The friendly Usa River Village is a short walk away and we got to experience the colourful Tanzanian markets. I highly recommend Mount Meru Gamed Lodge , we are already planning when we can go again.

Dear Othello25, thank you so much for your descriptive review. It is wonderful to hear that you enjoyed your explorations of the surrounding attractions including the nearby Arusha National Park and Usa River markets. Our guide, Jaito, who accompanied you and your children on your walk, thoroughly enjoyed showing you all around. It is an honour for him to introduce visitors to the neighbourhood. Thank you, too, for your note about the vegetarian options. We have a wide selection of meat-free meals including vegetarian soups and salads, vegetable stir-fry and curry, pasta and pizza, to name but a few. Our Lodge offers a safe space for parents and children to relax and play. It is great to hear that you managed to lie in while your children were entertained! We look forward to your return visit. There are a number of activities and attractions waiting for you including canoeing on Lake Daluti, cycling in the nearby forests and, of course, a coffee tour. Karibuni tena! With our fondest regards from the team at Mount Meru Game Lodge.

I stayed at this lodge for one night before my safari, and for another day and a half after my safari. We got there very late on our first night, and the staff waited for us, and still served us dinner even though it was past dinner time. They were very accommodating. Rooms are very nice, and feels warm and romantic. The best part of this hotel is the grounds . Absolutely beautiful! Wonderful and well tended gardens, animals such as the Columbus monkies, water Buffalos, Zebras, birds etc. There's a beautiful pool, but we didn't use it. Food was always delicious, and plentiful. I had a hamburger ordered for lunch a few hours before checking out, and it was huge and yummy. Met the owners, Harry and Kim. Two delightful people. They spoke regularly to their guests, and made you feel welcome. They seemed like such a nice couple. You can tell they are proud of their business, and working so hard to make it comfortable for guests. Best wishes to them. I would recommend some renovations in some of the bathrooms. It didn't spoil my experience, just something that should be done in the near future. An overall great experience at the Mt. Meru Game Lodge. I hope to visit again sometime, this time with my 2 kids.

Dear Wande, it was a great pleasure meeting you and chatting, and we sincerely hope to see you again (as you say, together with your children) in the not-too-distant future. Thank you so much for your positivity and encouragement about our Lodge grounds, food, rooms and service. Harry and I thoroughly enjoy meeting and getting to know our guests, and hearing about their Tanzania experience. For us it is a real joy to connect with our guests in this way. We are indeed passionate about hospitality, our business, our team, and our offering, and we are so happy to hear that this shines through. Many thanks for your note about our bathrooms. You are right, and we have in fact started working in three of our rooms this very week: replacing tired floors and redoing those bathrooms that require an update. This is an exciting development and the continuation of renovation works that began in late 2021. Watch this space! Wishing you all the best back home and in the planning of your next Tanzania adventure. Karibu tena! With fond regards from the team at Mount Meru Game Lodge.

I stayed at the lodge for four days after going a 4 day safari. People here make you feel so welcome and were very accommodating. I asked for a late departure. The food was very good as well. I couldn't stop taking pictures of the animals around the pond.

We went on a family trip to Tanzania and this was our first stop. Arriving late, with very hungry teenage boys, we were greeted by smiling, welcoming staff, a warm bonfire, and treated to a delicious feast. The rooms are large, the beds are so comfortable and the setting ideal with our own watering hole with buffalo and zebra. The sound of cicadas, the colobus moneys, the beautiful lush gardens and wonderful pool meant we could relax and unwind. We went on a few trips: to a lake, Arusha national park and a Maasai village. We spent a lovely Xmas here, kids played football, they swam and we all loved the food. The staff were friendly and helpful. The place is well cared for and clean. A wonderful place that we will definitely go back to. Thank you Harry and Kim! Justine

Dear Justine, it was a great pleasure for us hosting your family group over Christmas here at Mount Meru Game Lodge. Nothing pleases us more than having children playing football on the lawns, and families enjoying our pool and watching the monkeys and birds in action in the trees. Besides the crowned cranes, yellow-billed storks, ducks and geese that frequent our small dam, we have bird species visit us from time to time. This week, statuesque white egrets and a pair of palm-nut vultures - welcome visitors! We look forward to your return to Mount Meru Game Lodge, and Tanzania at large. There is so much to explore in this beautiful country, and we would love to host you again! Sending our very best wishes to you all, from the team at MMGL.

Water buffalo chill in their dam cooling of . We did the same in the picturesque pool after a long day of sightseeing.. The pizzas are scrumptious but the day always starts with a wholesome breakfast. Thank you team Mt Meru lodge

Dear Gary, thank you so much for posting your informative review. We are thrilled to read that you enjoyed being with us all here at Mount Meru Game Lodge. We certainly loved hosting you and we hope that you (and your family) will be back. We remember you said how much you'd like to return in the not-too-distant future with your children - bring them to climb Mount Meru! We've just had the opportunity to do this for the first time, and it was incredible. Our Lodge is also very conveniently located and would make the perfect base for you all, what with the hike beginning and ending in the nearby Arusha National Park. We look forward to seeing you soon. Fondest regards from the team at Mount Meru Game Lodge.

I can't say enough fabulous things about this place. Incredible service started at the moment I made the booking. I booked this place with the aim of spending a couple of quiet days to chill and relax. My intent to relax was fulfilled with quiet reading and napping by the pool, watching the various animals go about their activities and a nice glass of wine. The grounds are incredibly serene and tranquil and the gardens are well groomed. There are plenty of nooks and hideaway places for quiet spots and privacy that I didn't even realise there were other guests. The lodge has a nice bar/lounge area if you want an inside place to sit and read or chat with others. I had meals at the lodge both days and found a good variety to choose from and the taste was fantastic. Harry and his staff ensured that my every need was met - even ones I didn't know I had! My suite had all of the amenities that were necessary and was a cozy place to sleep at night. I arranged a massage on my second day and was quite pleased with the treatment and care I recieved - especially for the reasonable price! This lodge has a rich history and there are tons of photos of the family and lodge in its early years. I travel to Tanzania at least once a year and Harry's lodge will always be on my list to stay for respite!

Mt. Meru Game Lodge came highly recommended to us by friends as an ideal stopover on our way to safari, and we couldn't have been happier with our stay. On the grounds of its own private game reserve with a pedigreed history, it has everything you could wish for--restful rooms, delicious food, happy staff, and truly inspiring hosts. There is a real sense of community and purpose here. Plus, monkeys overhead! We loved it.

We just came back from Tanzania, having spent 5 days at the Mount Meru Game Lodge. We had an amazing stay and it was the perfect place to land and settle in before we left on a 5 day safari. The owners and staff were amazing, as was the food , pool, and overall setting. We enjoyed our days there and also making little side trips nearby. Cannot recommend this place highly enough.

Dear JdeFou, what a wonderful review to wake up to - thank you so much for your 5 stars and for your comprehensive feedback. We appreciate it very much. Above all, our intention is to create a warm and welcoming home away from home for our valued guests, knowing that the majority of them will have disembarked from a long-haul flight or countless hours spent in a safari vehicle traversing the African plains, immediately before arriving here. Indeed, where we are in Usa River offers places of interest and excursions that, more and more, our guests are choosing to spend time exploring: the 18-hole Kili Golf course; cultural walking tour (guided by one of our staff members); canoeing on Lake Duluti, forest walks, day trip to Arusha National Park (entrance gate on the Momella Road is a 15 minute drive from here) and more. We hope your overall experience in this beautiful country was special and memorable. And we hope to welcome you back again to experience our hospitality. Thanks again for your valuable feedback. Best wishes for 2023, from the team at Mount Meru Game Lodge.
