Nestled in a prime location, The Portofino Hotel & Marina garners mixed reviews, with guests enamored by its elegant ambiance and stunning ocean views, yet some criticize the upkeep and cleanliness of the rooms. While the staff's professionalism often receives commendations, the value is questioned due to high fees and unexpected charges for amenities, which, alongside limited facilities, leaves some visitors feeling the experience doesn't justify the cost.
Despite this, the hotel's proximity to the beach and local sights remains a highlight for many travelers.

We enjoyed our staycation at The Portofino! Craig at the front desk was extremely helpful during check-in. We loved how dog friendly the property is! Having a glass of wine next to the lobby fireplace in the evening was perfect. Room service breakfast arrived so quickly and was delicious. We look forward to coming back in the summer to enjoy the pool!

My husband and I loved our stay at the Portofino and highly recommend it. Definitely choose an oceanside room as it is incredible to watch the sky change throughout the day, the ocean break on the sea wall and sunset was so lovely. The sea lions and seagulls were very entertaining and it made the whole experience feel more luxurious to watch from bed. The staff were friendly and helpful. A huge shout out to Cathy at the front desk and Servando at Baleen. They were the type of people that make you want to come back as often as possible purely for the conversations and recommendations. They made us feel so welcome and seemed to be genuinely excited that we were there on vacation. Our stay was all the more memorable because of them. Baleen has an awesome brunch next to the marina. The tableside heaters were much appreciated on a rainy and windy day! The hotel room was clean, the bed comfy, and the decor reflecting its location by the ocean. While we didn't get to enjoy them because of the weather, I hope to try out the one-hour complimentary bike rides that they offer. The beach walks are so close and we enjoyed being able to check out the Redondo Beach pier on foot. I appreciated the measures the hotel was taking for COVID and that they offered hand sanitizer throughout the hotel. My only recommendation is that the hotel should offer a water fountain in the lobby area because tap water isn't good there. The in-room bottles were $6 each so we ended up going out to buy water at a local convenience store instead because we were thirsty. Overall, a great stay and I highly recommend it!

Dear MsKing1727, Wonderful! Thank you so much for joining us at The Portofino Hotel and Marina. We are grateful to see so many of our guests return after months of limited travel and uncertainty. We are delighted to welcome our guests back and to have the opportunity to provide travelers, like yourself, an oasis to relax, feel safe and enjoy the fresh ocean breeze. Although it was a little stormy during your stay, we are thrilled you were able to enjoy watching the waves crash over the harbor jetty wall. It's quite spectacular view! Again, we appreciate your business and your invaluable feedback. We hope your travels brings you back to Redondo Beach soon! Regards, Darin Matsuda Hotel Manager

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveller reviews.
Stayed at the hotel from the 8th jan until 15th jan 2020 had booked four rooms and there were several other guests attending my sons wedding.
The hotel itself is gorgeous but nobody let us know that there was extensive renovation work going on and the noise was not good, but what really got us was the painting of corridors on the day of the wedding, not acceptable.
Parking $28 a night, rip off for people staying at the hotel or for wedding, as well as the Resort fee, didn’t warrant this for the facility’s offered, the living room was never used during the day due to the deafening noise. The bar was open infrequently at night as the barman disappeared and didn’t come back.
The room was ok, clean and beds comfortable, bathroom needs updating but nice touches with toiletries, shaving mirror and a big vanity mirror and hairdryers. The walls are paper thin hearing everything going on in adjacent rooms. Wouldn’t stay again, excellent location, poor service, uncaring management.
The baleen kitchen was good and the bar in it we had breakfast there a few times and it was fab we also used Polly on the piers and Ruby’s
The wedding was in a local chapel St James beautiful then back to the ballroom at The Portofino catering and bar staff and the-wedding planner kate were fantastic and the band to were brilliant
My husband spoke to a manager and we were giving a small discount but the main thing is keep in touch with your customers when work going on in your hotel

Dear Pretty_65, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We apologize the lobby refresh disturbed your stay. The hotel did its best to minimize the impact to our guests by providing the restaurant lounge as an alternative place to gather. Additionally, we stopped all work prior to food and beverage service in the lobby lounge, the Living Room. We are saddened and concerned about your impressions of the hotel's response to your concerns. Although, at that point, we could not affect the actual work, we could have provided you more options and a better response to them. It sounds like the wedding itself was beautiful. We hope you enjoyed your time in the States and will give us another opportunity should you make your way back to Redondo Beach. Regards, Darin Matsuda Hotel Manager

While the rooms are a little dated, they’re still beautiful. Nautical themes are abundant: blue walls and carpeting, boat photos, a monitor showing underwater scenes in the elevator. My room faced the parking lot but even that view was lovely as you can still see the pier. I was pleasantly surprised by how quiet it was, even with people next door and the balcony right over the lobby entrance and how dark the room got with the curtains pulled, making it easy to sleep in! There’s a refrigerator in the room and a coffee maker. I was a little disappointed that there’s no full length mirror (at least not in my room). The bathroom amenities are sparse, I’m assuming due to covid, but there were large bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotion, as well as a hair dryer. Everything seemed very clean (some old stains on the carpet but that can’t be helped). The pool is small but warm and plenty of sun chairs. The hot tub and gym are currently closed due to the pandemic. You can easily walk to the Redondo Beach pier and from there to the beach, or the other direction to Hermosa Beach. There are walking and bike paths in both directions. Baleen restaurant is FABULOUS but there’s Joe’s Crab Shack next door and many other options to eat on the pier. The front desk employees were all so friendly and helpful, a special thank you to Jacob who was fantastic! Resort fees are extra upon checkout, $24.95 per night, and that fee is for the facilities: ie the pool, coffee in room, and bike rentals (only first hour, after that there’s an additional charge). Honestly, it’s one of the more expensive hotels in the area, but sometimes you just need to treat yourself! Great stay!

Stayed 4 days. Well worth the extra expense for the full 'Ocean View' room. Third floor is the best if available. We didn't have a car, but wasn't needed. Pier and several restaurants with outdoor seating are within walking distance. All have socially distanced tables, hand sanitizer at the entrance and masks worn by Servers (November 2020). Kayak, paddle board, etc. rentals nearby. Hotel is very clean, every staff member is exceptionally friendly, helpful and wears a mask at all times. Bicycles (practically new) are provided by the hotel (free for one hour) which was a plus. What a treat...felt like such an escape.

This is a 2-star hotel at best. The phone and TV were broken. Walls razor thin. They also operate a bar/restaurant across the street and blast music at your room. Clerk tried to charge us an additional "facility" fee for every night we stayed, despite the room being fully pre-paid.
Several extra mystery charges on credit card AFTER we checked out. These were not authorized. Do not believe the manager if s/he tries to write a reply to this review pretending to care, have contacted them several times and they do not care and are quite rude about it to boot. Suspect they are the type of hotel that places these BS charges after the fact hoping most people won't even notice.

I would be happy to connect with you and take a closer look at your folio. Please contact me directly at porres@hotelportofino.com. I look forward to hearing from you soon. I grew up near Redondo Beach, so I knew I wanted a location for my wedding that meant something special to me. I visited the Hotel Maya and the Hyatt in Long Beach, along with the Crowne Plaza (which, is now the Sonesta) and the Shade Hotel in Redondo Beach. All of these hotels are beautiful, but the Portofino is the only hotel that gives you a full ocean view throughout your whole wedding. My main two contacts at the Portofino, Chris Schmidt and Rain Villaneuva, were always on top of things and never hesitated to go over things again. Chris and Rain were with us throughout the whole COVID pandemic and kept in contact with us. Rain went above and beyond in communicating with the chef to make a gluten and vegetarian pasta for some of my guests, was polite and patient, and he even held my husband's wallet and phone during our grand entrance. My parents commented on how accommodating and sweet all the waiters were. My family and guests raved on how good the food was, even the picky eaters enjoyed the food! Our complimentary ocean view room was delightful! I loved how our view captured both the Palos Verdes peninsula and "seal island." I will say this, if you are looking for big spacious rooms then this may not be the hotel for you. Call ahead and ask for room sizes. The hotel property isn't very large, but there is a pool, bikes to rent, a restaurant and a beautiful lobby. The location of the Portofino is perfect! If you want to walk, you're about 15 minutes from the Redondo pier which has so many affordable things to do and places to eat. If you're venue hunting for a wedding or any type of occasion, then please consider this place. If you are visiting the South Bay for the first time, then please consider this place. Do your research and make the necessary calls, but in the end the Portofino is the right place to go. Even though my husband and I only recently got married on July 23, 2021, we are already planning that for our 5th or 10th wedding anniversary we plan on coming back to the Portofino to host the event.

I was a guest for 6 days and never had maid service. I went downstairs daily to ask for coffee, creamers and sugars as to make coffee in the morning. I took out my own trash, made my bed, cleaned bathroom, got fresh towels from maids in the hallways that were servicing other rooms. I never received, nor offered, any type of maid service. I felt at like I was at a motel6, a very expensive motel6.

Dear dmary50, We are disappointed we did not meet your expectation. Additionally, it is apparent the hotel missed a couple of opportunities to communicate and to actively look to improve your stay. At registration, the hotel should've reviewed some of the housekeeping service options. We will certainly share and review your comments with the team to highlight areas we could improve in the future. We appreciate your feedback and hope to be able to show you we care and listen to our guest feedback. Regards, Darin Matsuda Hotel Manager

All around amazing.
Upon arrival staff was very welcoming and tentative. In between guest checking in they took the necessary precautions to sanitize as well as explaining to the guest it will only be a quick minute. The lobby/guest area is beautiful! The decoration through out the hotel was my
favorite (if you appreciate the ocean, nautical, chic style.. you will appreciate). The ocean view was just breath taking as the sun began to set!
