Hotel's Favourite
It was definitely the right decision to stay at Yu Kiroro for our girls gathering holiday in Hokkaido in mid January. From the first impression when we traveled on the shuttle bus from Otaru-Chikko station to the hotel, we could see the luxurious building and the dreamy lit Christmas tree amidst the snow wonderland. The lobby was decorated with warm fireplace overlooking a big high floor to ceiling glass window to a beautiful scenery of pine tress covered in thick white snow. This place was very well designed. It was luxury, yet warm and cozy. The lighting combined with the colours and paintings used in the decoration around the hall, the elevator was posh and cheerful in contrast with the cold white colour outside. The check in was very efficient. We stayed in a two-bedroom suite. The suite was very clean and spacious. We had a kitchen for ourselves and a large living room. Again, the room has great floor-to-ceiling height and a big glass window overlooking the snowy mountain. The furniture within the living room was comfortable. We had a dining table to enjoy our meal, Hokkaido-made desserts that we got from Otaru and local drinks (Famous local whiskey and sake). The bathroom was very functional, the amenity was generous, the bed and the pillows are only going to melt you in. We had breakfast and dinner at Yukashi, the only restaurant in the hotel. The dishes was beautifully plated, using high quality local ingredient (Akaigawa Rice, Hokkaido Seafood, local tomatoes and sweetest corn). During the course of our stay for 3 nights, we tried almost 10 dishes and we would give 9.5/10 on average to all the dishes. Some dishes that you cannot miss are the Lobster Linguine, Katsu Curry (We asked for higher spice level, which is even better) and Seafood Risotto. For dessert, I highly recommend Sake Tiramisu. The quality of the snow at the ski trail was amazing especially after the second night of our stay when we had over 20 cm of snowfall overnight. The snow was unlike any other places we have been and it was perfect for skiing and snowboarding. Even some of us do not ski or snowboard, they still enjoy the whole experience of food scene, the beauty of the nature that we cannot find in our hectic daily lives. The energy of the place combined with the serene of the nature are a powerful charge for our mind. Traveling to this place with good friends, and our beloved ones will be an incredible experience in a life time. I will be back.

The snow in KIRORO is the best for snowboarding and skiing in Japan. The atmosphere here in Yu KIRORO Hotel is awesome. No shopping is available but facilities and services are great. Very expensive but valuable. I will come back ever winter for sure.

I had been traveling Hokkaido over twenty years and visited quite a lot ski resorts hotels; Yu Kiroro simply doesn’t meet the standards. When I searched Google; it shows Yu Kiroro is a 5-star ski in ski out hotel. After arriving; their front desk clerk Shella told us they are service apartments; NOT hotel. She told us their front desk manager will contact us for explanation but no one followed up at all. We stayed there for four days three nights and they only cleaned up the room ONE time; replaced towels ONE time; and do NOT change bed sheets at all. If you need more towels; there will be extra charge. Also the check out time is 10am; if you request for late check out; there will be extra charge. The so called ski in ski out 5-star hotel can help you to dispose ski equipment but there will be extra charges. Also their onsen doesn’t meet ski resort standards as well, their outdoor onsen is just a small bathtub around 3feet x 8feet. They only have one restaurant with simple dishes; also breakfast is included with very limited choices; no gifts shop; no game room. In past years I love every ski resort staying in Hokkaido but not this time. Overall it’s a disappointed experience.

We were attracted to Yu Kiroro because of their serviced apartments as it would give our group of six the opportunity to gather together in the comfort and privacy of our own living room. What worked: - Spacious, well appointed and tastefully designed apartments with requisite creature comforts to make this a home away from home. The apartments that we stayed in also had lovely views of the ski resort. - The in-house public onsen has both indoor and outdoor pools with full bathing amenities provided. If public bathing isn't your thing there is also a private onsen which comes at an added cost to book. Onsen access is limited to in-house guests only, and it was clean and well maintained during our stay. - The one and only restaurant Yukashi was very good, particularly their Western menu. The Japanese menu was decent but not outstanding like the Western one. - Guest Experience Manager Allan deserves special mention for living up to his job title! We were initially given the wrong apartment when we checked in through no fault of the operations staff at Yu Kiroro, as the main issue lay with their booking website. Allan was quick to offer us a stop-gap solution until the apartment that we wanted freed up. He showed empathy for our situation and speedily offered a service recovery solution that was thoughtful and helped allay our initial disappointment. - Easy access to Kiroro Ski Resort which was amazing with the snow gods delivering lots of powder during our stay. With fast, well maintained and covered chairlifts, we were able to get around efficiently and warmly, except for a few ancient 2-seater open chairlifts. Courses were well groomed and resort F&B options were good with a variety of local and western restaurants. What didn’t work: - Yu Kiroro is NOT Ski-in and Ski-out. There is a Gondola that takes guests to Kiroro Ski Resort which is less than a 100m from the Ski Valet, however, there is no gradient to speak of so snowboarders are better off walking to the Gondola Building and skiers should be prepared for a workout especially when there’s lots of snow. Additionally, the Gondola has limited operating hours in the morning only, making it a one-way ride. - To return, the 1km long Gateway Course leads straight back to the Ski Valet but as it is 90% flat snowboarders are better off walking. My skiing friends didn’t have an easy time either as the snow conditions on the course made it challenging for them too. So it really isn’t Ski-in and Ski-out but Suffer-in and Suffer-out. - Yu Kiroro’s “Ski Valet” is a lofty concept but is in reality a ski storage area. Services only extend to helping guests store and take out equipment each day, and does not include returning rental equipment back to the Mountain Centre. During the time we were there only one poor staff managed the Ski Valet and was understandably overwhelmed even though he put his best foot forward. Over time more staff were assigned to help during peak hours, but expect this issue to continue given the severe staff shortage across ski resorts in Japan. - Only one in-house restaurant is available, which means having to book in advance or risk not having anything to eat if you’re tardy. Other supplementary F&B options included pre-packed groceries to cook with, Bento Boxes and access to Club Med restaurants at a hefty cost. - With no local ski village to speak of, guests are beholden to Yu Kiroro and neighbouring Club Med (with limited access) for apres-ski. Yu Kiroro would better suit travellers who enjoy a quieter, more grown up and self-contained accommodation option. If you’re looking for an all inclusive, minimal effort holiday with the option to jettison your children go to Club Med. The workaround to Yu Kiroro’s limitations is to manage your expectations of what Yu Kiroro is, as well as what it isn’t. We opted to rent cars which meant not having to be held hostage to the resort bus or suffer from a lack of dining options. Otaru is only a 40 min drive away and we drove in daily for dinner and to pick up groceries and other conveniences.

Response from Yukiroro Marketing, マーケティング at Yu Kiroro
Responded 23 Mar 2023
Dear KK, Thank you very much for your detailed feedback. We are happy to hear the overall stay was a success despite hiccups along the way. The previously mentioned issue with the booking site has been updated to match the correct apartment setups. Yu Kiroro is a ski-in-ski-out, but the section leading to the building is not as steep as the slopes upper in the mountain center. The gateway express lift had during peak season limited operation and as of now has no qualified staff to operate it from the ski operation side. Ski valet ideally should have more staff for dealing with the ski items, especially during the peak times. Unfortunately, as stated in your message, there has not been enough staff due to lack of staff in valet and all departments. Regarding our in-house restaurant, we are now in the works of finding a better solution for next season. Looking forward to having you again at Yu Kiroro. Kind regards, Yu Kiroro Guest Service Team

Yu Kiroro is an eye-wateringly expensive hotel at the base of the Kiroro ski field. It looks good from the outside and the rooms are well appointed but it has no atmosphere and the food is poor. Kiroro skifield says that it was voted best skifield in Japan in 2022 but I expect that simply means it is full of pretentious poseurs at the Club Med because best skifield it demonstrably is not. It does have good snow but the tree runs that are open are pathetic. Unless you come for the back country touring you should go elsewhere - eg. Rusutsu and Niseko have far better on and off piste skiing, have far better family facilities, and much more reasonable accommodation (and in Niseko, a variety of outside restaurants)
