Aunt Edna's Boarding House B&B is a designated heritage structure on Little Bay Islands, a typical Newfoundland Outport. Cultural interpretation in word, music, and song are what make Aunt Edna's stand out from all the rest. Gourmet, vegetarian, and traditional meals add to the experience with fresh seafood available right off the wharf across the street.

Detailed Reviews
I can only repeat what other reviewers have deservedly stated. Sharlene is a kind, generous and informative hostess. She looked after us like only a loving aunt would. She is a spectacular cook with a flare for presentation. Our welcome, accommodation and food were first rate. Anyone looking for a taste of outport Newfoundland at excellent rates will be thoroughly pleased.
Hoping to see you next year, Sharon and Rob.

Our recent 2 night stay with Sharlene at Aunt Ednas turned into one of the highlights of our trip. The house is beautiful, nicely decorated with lovely period touches throughout, a very comfortable room, separate private bathroom with clawfoot bath and even a possible mischievous resident spirit who unfortunately ignored us! As there are no eateries on the island Sharlene provides gourmet meals on request, both lunches and dinner, she is an amazing cook and irrepressible raconteur!
A must place to visit before possible resettlement removes another page from the history of Newfoundlands outports.

Stayed 2 nights at Sharlene's heritage house in LBI. What a quaint old town. There are no stores, shops to browse, nor crowds to avoid. We enjoyed our stay with Sharlene who showed us a down-home Newfoundland good time. Took us to a neighbourhood "scoff" where she played her bohran, the Irish drum, with the impromptu band. One of the guest took us on a quick walk to the rugged inlet behind the house and then invited us to his place the next day. We hiked to the top of the town trail Pole Hill for a specatular view of the cosiest harbour we've seen outside of St. John's. We ate at Sharlene's who is a terrific cook and seems always to make too much. We did walk to the neighbour's the day after the party and Ray and Doris provided lemonade to us almost complete strangers. What wonderful people they all are...

Hostess, Sharlene, extremely welcoming and personable. Feels like home right away. Excellent food and Sharlene treats guests with generosity, grace and good humour. Heritage house that's been appropriately updated to the period of its time. Everything about the accommodation was great and the location worth the side trip off the mainland of NL. Beautiful site and sight; neighbours friendly and welcoming to come-from-aways. Little Bay Islands may be resettled in next couple of years...definitely worth a visit while it's still possible. In the summer, Kitchen parties (musical jamming sessions) happen at the house on a regular basis--part of the NL lifestyle.

This restored house shows the life of a well-to-do 20th century family on a now remote island, once the center of an active and prosperous fishing and boat-building community. The owner, Sharlene Hinz, is a vivacious, friendly, natural hostess, full of island lore. She produces excellent traditional meals, and the rooms are well furnished and comfortable. It is a small place, authentic, and totally charming.
The island itself has a limited economy, and the inhabitants tend to be retired, but full of energy and fun. There is a wide variety of hiking trails all over the island, with lookouts, railings, and signs (sometimes). In season, blueberries and raspberries are plentiful, and the locals will share their knowledge. Resettlement, as is many similar locations, has become a topic on everyone's mind, and this gem of a place may disappear. Go while you can!

Aunt Edna's Boarding House B&B in Little Bay Islands is a treat. Owner, Sharlene Hinz has done a splendid job restoring a lovely old house into a delightful B&B.
Little Bay Islands is a 30 minute ferry ride from Pilley's Island. Presently, it is a little awkward to get to LBI since vehicles have to back onto the ferry--apparently damage to the front ramp has not been repaired by the NL Government which runs the ferry service. While a bit irritating, the experience becomes part of one's overall memory of a unique place in NL. Consult the schedule for departure times.
Recently, the residents voted to accept a payout from the government to relocate. It is very expensive for the Government to provide services to a community of about 70 people: in the long run, it is cheaper to pay them to move. Therefore, the days of Little Bay Islands seem numbered. When the villagers relocate, the ferry will shut down.
That is why it is important to visit this picturesque village soon. The people are friendly and interesting. There are wonderful walking trails, including a boardwalk to the top of a hill overlooking the harbour. The local cemetery provides a glimpse into the long history of this lovely village which has fallen on hard times since the closure of the only industry a couple of years ago--the crab processing plant.
Off the beaten tourist path, this is a wonderful spot to learn about the real Newfoundland and its people.
Aunt Edna's B&B has its own colorful history, as owner Sharlene Hinz will happily explain. It has a unique charm and reflects the artistic imprint of its owner who is very hospitable. The rooms are quaint, but all the modern necessities are provided: WiFi, modern bathroom fixtures, etc. The dining room and living room are wonderfully comfortable. Since there are no stores or cafes in town, Sharlene provides excellent meals, as well as wonderful conversation. Guests are made to feel very welcome.
Little Bay Islands and Aunt Edna's B&B provide a unique experience--one, sadly, that may soon disappear.

Sharlene and Jim made us welcome.
Sharlene showed us the room and round the B & B explaining everything as we went along.
The B & B is an old Heritage house that had been left to it's own devices for a while. Sharlene and Jim bought it and renovated & redecorated in keeping with the period of the house. A lot of the furniture was just gathering dust when they arrived, try and find dust now. Yes the place is clean through out.
Comfortable and good food to go with the excellent hosts.
I sure can recommend Aunt Edna's

As some may know they are looking at stopping the ferry going to the island, before they do this you must visit the island and stay at Aunt Edna’s. A more beautiful place, gracious host (Shar) and friendly people you will not find. 12 out of 10.............the highlight of our trip. The only bad thing was we only booked one night.

Thank you so much, it will be a sad day for sure when I take that last ferry trip off island. But not to worry we are already working on an alternative. I'll stay in touch.

We were lucky enough to be the First guests for the 2019 season. The ferry trip to the island was fun as we chatted with several local Newfoundlanders. Little Bay Island is gorgeous, beautiful harbor and charming town.
Sharlene is a welcome treat so welcoming, we felt like we had known her forever. We had the spacious Seaview room. The queen bed was soooo comfortable and the shower superb.
We had a glass of wine while chatting with our gracious hostess and learning lots of the History of Little Bay Island.
Love, love, love our stay. We are so happy to have taken the time discover Little Bay and Aunt Edna's.

Thank you Jan and Mike, you were the perfect guests to kick of the season and remind me of why I love Little Bay Islands and my B&B. It will be heartbreaking when they turn out the lights and we all board the ferry for the last time. Enjoy your travels and if you have any problems just ask the Newfoundlander standing by for a hand and he and all his buddies will be there for you. All the best, Sharlene

My wife and I stayed at Aunt Edna's Bed and Breakfast on Little Bay Islands in September. The house is a beautifully preserved heritage home just up from the water. It is easy to get to and is the best base for exploring the island. Sharlene is a wonderful hostess We very much enjoyed her company and her hospitality. The breakfasts were terrific and the two dinners that she prepared were delicious. The house is clean, warm and cozy and geared to relaxation. The Island is interesting to explore and has a number of trails for walking. Sadly though, the community is in turmoil as they struggle with the question of "relocation". This is a wonderful place to visit and should not be missed by those who wish to experience a taste of Newfoundland Out-port life while it still exists.

Thank you for the review of Aunt Edna's and our beautiful Little Bay Islands. I've put on my travel writer hat now and I'm on the other side of the country now writing about other small islands in Canada and how they survive and prosper. I'm starting with Gabriola Island, one of the islands of the Gulf Islands of BC. Thanks again!
