Been using this hotel for the past 30 years. We drove up from Lancashire and arrived in time for lunch in the bar. My wife as usual ordered the steak frites; I chose the Bass Rock Burger. First attempt at the steak was sent back due to it not being properly cooked. A fresh steak was promised by the waitress. When that arrived it was over cooked; we suspect that it was the original re heated. It was inedible. Apparently it was not the normal chef. What went wrong? The whole episode has left us with a feeling of total disappointment. A hotel such as this needs to ensure consistency. Luckily it was not a special occasion such as a golden wedding. Why so bad after so many years?
We’ve just returned from a lovely 2 night stay at The Marine and Lawn North Berwick. On arrival we were met by a lovely receptionist. We shared a family room with our 11 year old son. Room, excellent although shower a little under pressure. Beautiful sea views. Furniture and fittings, top quality. The breakfast was excellent on both mornings with the staff friendly and attentive. We really enjoyed the spa on 2 occasions, particularly the jacuzzi . The newly installed chipping/putting area provides an extra activity. We explored North Berwick and enjoyed nice meals with plenty of choice. The beach walks were a real treat also. All in all a relaxing get away.
Check in – Absolutely no issues whatsoever. The girl on the desk was friendly and welcoming and check in only took a matter of minutes. The girl asked when I would like breakfast, and a short while later I was emailed with my requested 8.00am time. Great touch. My room – Beautiful room, loved the décor and also loved the very deep free standing bath. I have to congratulate housekeeping. The room and the bathroom were absolutely spotless. Impeccable. Everything very neatly stored in the wardrobes as well. Iron, hangers etc… Bar – I had one quick drink in the bar when I got back around 11.30pm. Bar was lovely and the female was again very welcoming and friendly Sleep – I am a terrible sleeper in general. No matter what time I go to bed I always wake up around 5am or even earlier. I must have fallen asleep around midnight and woke at 7.50am having slept right through. I don’t remember the last time I had a sleep like that. Absolutely brilliant and an incredibly comfy bed 😊 Breakfast – Unfortunately this was the only negative for my stay. Again the service was excellent with friendly and attentive staff. The food however was really very poor and very disappointing. I ordered the full breakfast without haggis and had an extra egg instead ( poached ). Not a huge issue but didn’t think the presentation was that great, but the main issue was definitely the food. The sausage was undercooked, the eggs were very cold and the potato scone was very overdone. I honestly struggled to cut it with my knife and fork. I was also surprised how quickly my breakfast came out from the kitchen. It was less than 5 mins, so kind of makes me think the potato scone may have been sitting under the hotplates for a wee while. Strange one with the eggs being cold as they were cooked nicely with a perfectly runny yolk. The sausage wasn’t great at all I’m afraid Check out – No issues. It was 2 different girls from check in, and again both were lovely, friendly and welcoming…
Staff were very helpful. We had good food in the BassRock bar and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Our dog was made to feel very welcome and when a ceiling lightbulb needed changing the Facilities Manager changed it immediately.
My fiancé and I stayed at the Marine hotel as we were in the area looking at wedding venues. Unfortunately, while we found the bed comfy and the breakfast good there were a number of areas that didn’t meet our expectations for a high-end hotel. One of the main reasons we chose the Marine hotel was for the spa facilities, however we were disappointed to find temporary male changing facilities and the female changing room freezing cold with missing roof tiles. There were a number of spa rooms out of order and the sauna was cold. We were not notified in advance of our stay of these problems. The bathroom in our room had a chipped toilet seat, a cracked tile and the shower pressure was weak. We had been really looking forward to our stay at a hotel with a great reputation so were disappointed to encounter the issues outlined above. We contacted the hotel following our stay to provide feedback and did not receive a response.…
A great hotel overlooking an iconic golf course in the heart of East Lothian. Superb. It was a real treat. I stayed with my son and we have a most memorable weekend. Access to/from the train was easy, staff was great. We'll be back.
I have eaten at the Marine several times now, and the standard slowly declined. Our last meal was disappointing and the "Bass Rock Burgers" were tasteless and certainly not worth £15. The restaurant manger was professional, apologised and gave us a 30% off voucher for next visit. This review is after the second visit. The burgers weren't any better. In fact worse. If you took handful of Tesco mince and moulded it into a patty and grilled it... the taste would be the same. Add to that two lifeless and tasteless tiny bits of gherkin, that looked like they had been in the kitchen for a few weeks, two sorry looking bits of reheated streaky bacon. One bit of lettuce..the chips seem reheated too...they used to be good. The service is ying and yang. There are two chaps that are on the ball and know the script. The rest of the staff are young and not properly trained. When walking through the dining area, they have the art of not looking at tables down to a fine art. the floor being their visual preference. Three times I had to get up and walk through next door to ask for some service. This has always been the case at the Marine..it would be unacceptable if you were in a greasy spoon cafe and even more unacceptable in a 5 star hotel. The total bill for two burgers, 4 drinks and a small meal and drink for our boy was £84.00 this is after the 30% discount. The promise of free cocktails wasn't allowed because the voucher had a mon - Thursday caveat. On the plus side, the views from the restaurant are epic. The two guys that are on the ball are great. The rest of it is not up to the mark and the staff need trained on the basics. I run a tourism business and always hope that I could be confident to send my guests here...however I won't. Because I know I would be creating problems I'd have to deal with.. I hope this is seen as constructive criticism and things improve. The food is underwhelming and the kitchen hasn't got the love of food/attention to detail they should have..after 8 meals here, I'm entitled to make that opinion.…
Friendly Staff. Great customer service Very personable. Great location & accessible to visit Edinburgh on the train. Highly recommended. Restaurant food was good. Took a winter offer & was upgraded & had a late check out which extended our trip. Beach walks just past the golf course.
It was our first experience in Scotland and I must say that the Marine hotel helped in discovering the charm of Scotland. Very impressed by the outstanding view and the quality of the service. And of course the wonderful SPA!
My wife and two kids were looking forward to a luxurious night away last week prior to going back to work and school but we ended up having a really frustratingly disappointing stay at Marine North Berwick. We arrived just before 3pm only to be told our room wasn't ready and to take a seat. There were plenty of other folk waiting to get into their rooms - fine, though - A 30-40 minute wait isn't the best with young kids, but, also, not the end of the world. When we did get to our room it seemed nice - big and spacious, fun for the kids to run about in. However, immediately we noticed this low, rumbling noise. My immediate thought was that it was something outside...I opened the windows only to hear nothing. The sound wasn't abating. I realised it was something in the room - like living in a flat above a room with a noisy washing machine going all day or that annoying drone you put up with whilst travelling somewhere on an aeroplane. It’s not the worst noise ever but it was irritating already and we'd only been in the room a matter of minutes. The floor was even vibrating underfoot near the window (which makes relaxing in the chair next to the window pretty difficult...) An enquiry at reception led to us finding out it was the hotel kitchen fan whirring below our room and that It would go off once the kitchen closed (eventually it stopped at 10:15pm, coming back on for breakfast service at 6:30am) - the girl told us she was going to speak with her supervisor...and yet, nobody came up the one floor to see us in our room. After an hour or so we eventually got a call explaining there were no spare rooms, no beds spare to put into other rooms they could move us to. Its frustrating but, again, not the end of the world. We were asked if it is loud…but nobody came up to hear what we were talking about. You would think that would be the first thing that hotel staff would do. We returned to reception twice more throughout the evening to respectfully express our unhappiness and yet nobody came to our room. The noise wasn't terrible but having young kids who we wanted to sleep and having paid a lot of money for a room in a very reputable hotel, a treat, a night away, we expected to feel welcomed and, at the very least, we expected someone to come up, hear what we were talking about and hear us out - to be treated with a basic level of care or importance. The room was eventually discounted, a welcome gesture, but one that wouldn't have even been necessary if we had just felt like we were being taken seriously. From that point on, everything we should've enjoyed became coloured by this. Dinner + breakfast nice enough - food was decent, servers nice enough...but little atmosphere. The pool - again, nice enough but the changing rooms were a bit beaten up/dated (loads of missing roof tiles in the gents changing rooms?) + there was no lifeguard. Our daughter banged her chin on the edge of the pool leading, funnily enough, to our nicest interaction with hotel staff - the first aider and spa/pool attendant came to the room to treat her and were really caring and friendly. The room itself (apart from the rumble) - fine. Spacious but bathroom a bit dated and electric tape used to hold a bit of the plaster wall on. Not overly luxurious... Overall, what would have been a nice (if a little underwhelming for what you pay) stay, became a very frustrating one in which we felt we were spending the majority of our time battling for any member of staff to take our complaint seriously. Nobody was rude. Nobody was incompetent. But basically everyone seemed completely indifferent. Other than one women just as we arrived who greeted the kids, little to no effort was made to make sure we were happy, surely the most important thing in hospitality! There just seemed to be this really odd malaise amongst the staff in general - no urgency, no extra effort you feel like you'd associate with an upmarket hotel. I'm sure we essentially had a bit of bad luck and that the hotel would be a very nice stay for a lot of people - basically, avoid Room 135!…
