Detailed Reviews
We stumbled upon a gold mine when we stayed at the Novara House for 3 nights while searching for family history and grave sites in Counties Meath and Westmeach. First and foremost, Margaret and Richie are first rate hosts, amiable in every way, who provide super comfortable rooms (we overslept until 9 am first night!!) with lovely layered neutral-colored multi-textured bedding, comfortable reading chair and lamp and spotless new shower with everything we could ask for. The breakfast was first-class, whole portions of a variety of fresh fruit (no chop-chop), yogurt, fresh grilled tomatoes on toast points, etc. and a French Press pot of wonderful coffee all served on lovely china.
Margaret and Richie are so very good at sensing what their guests want out of their stay and so when we told them about our quest, Margaret was on the phone in minutes, making contacts and getting us in touch with several people who were then of further help. We ended up at the end of the week actually attending the Irish funeral of a distant cousin. That kind of assistance is priceless!
And this comes naturally to these people because they seem to know just about everyone through their history of having grown up in west Ireland and lived and operated a business in Mullingar for over 20 years prior to their B&B. Because they are just off Dublin Road, they are easy to find and so easy to use as a home base. We traveled in every direction from Mullingar to see people, cemeteries, historical sites and museums. And Mullingar town has everything one needs.
They also kindly and discreetly noted to us that the Friday night Dublin hotels can fill up and as we had an early Saturday morning flight, we made a reservation. That advice was also invaluable because as we checked into the hotel, we found they indeed were fully booked. This B&B is for everyone who values compassion and excellence!

Richie and Margaret opened their home to us at the last minute to accommodate our needs. The rooms were spacious, open, and had fabulous showers! Richie and Margaret were very friendly and easy to talk with, it made us feel very welcome during our stay. My family and I definitely recommend this B&B!

Because we were fooled. We chose this place solely on the basis of high recommendations on Tripadvisore, and were hugely disappointed.
By comparison to other B&Bs we experienced in Ireland, Novara House is simply below average, and the most expensive at that.
Mullingar is just an ugly town, and you should never enter it unless you absolutely must.
Novara House is basically ok, but no more than that - it feels like an average Motel 6 in the 90s. The hosts are overall pleasant people, but not too helpful answering basic questions about the area.
While it might be a bit harsh to call it a bad B&B, there is absolutely no doubt whatsoever it is easy to find a much better place which will give you a much better value for your money.

Welcomed at the door by Margaret and then a pot of tea, just the sort of welcome you imagine from an Irish B and B!
Great breakfast and Ritchie makes potato cakes to have with it which are lovely.
I came back from town to another pot of tea which I loved, and told to help myself to a cuppa if they were not around, which is what made it really comfortable.
It is about fifteen minute walk to town along the main road, and is quitter than the places to stay in town which I preferred

We had a fabulous stay with Richie and Margaret (the hosts). They were very welcoming and helpful. Breakfast was perfect. The house is located within easy distance to Mullingar. The location of the house is away from the busy road and nice and quiet. The rooms were nice and warm.

Thank you very much for the 2 days we stayed at the Novarahouse. It was very exciting to meet Bobby Horan there. And the breakfast was really really tasty. I recommend it to everyone who wants to stay in Mullingar for one or more nights. Thank you for everything.

We were very warmly greeted and offered a cup of tea the instant we came in, although we came quite late in the evening. We didn't stay long enough to get to know Mr. Deane but Mrs. Deane was very pleasant company. She also had some really good suggestions for where we could have dinner. The room we were offered was equipped with everything we could wish for and the breakfast the next morning was genuine. We both enjoyed our first irish breakfast. Should we ever be in this area again, we would definitely come back and stay at Novara House.

Great welcome from an bhean agus an fhear an tigh
Good nights sleep
Good breakfast
Good location
Both Margaret and Richie have decades of experience in hospitality and it shows in the care they take of their guests
A couple from Germany at an adjoining table at breakfast were greeted like long lost friends
I will be back if the opportunity arises

We managed to find this B&B by chance whilst driving through Mullingar, and we received a warm welcome and were shown up to a lovely double room with ensuite bathroom. There was plenty of space, wifi and clean towels. The B&B is a short drive to the town, where the owners gave us some recommendations on where to eat, and we were happy to come home to a comfortable bed to sleep. The breakfast the next morning was delicious- a full irish, and prepared us for our drive on through Ireland. Recommended stay.
