Hotel Grimsborgir by Keahotels, set amidst the scenic wonders of the Golden Circle, garners praise for its spacious and comfortable rooms, complete with well-equipped kitchens and luxurious hot tubs. While the hotel's atmosphere is generally regarded as inviting and the cleanliness of the facilities is often commended, some guests feel that the value proposition is diluted by overpriced services and lackluster amenities. Despite minor criticisms regarding heat control, cleanliness inconsistencies, and occasional service delays, the friendly staff and picturesque location continue to be highlights for many visitors.

This was our first hotel on our Icelandic adventure. We enjoyed the roughly 90 minute drive from Keflavik Airport to the hotel. We received a pleasant welcome and were informed we were upgraded to a 4 bedroom apartment rather than the two bedroom one we had booked. The apartment was beautiful, clean, chic and initially very cosy and warm upon arrival.
Our two night stay overall was very pleasant. We even got a glimpse of the Northern lights!

Breakfast was a varied buffet but it was a little difficult to get an omelette made as the chef wasn’t around for long!

We ate both nights at the hotel restaurant - meals were ok with good portion size. Our child’s pizza was made with ketchup rather than a regular pizza sauce which the chef reluctantly admitted to and suggested he was trying a new recipe! They did make amends by taking the dish off the bill and complimenting the desserts. The dinners are accompanied by a good pianist playing familiar tunes which was a nice touch.

Sleep in the lovely apartment was affected by the rooms being very hot despite us turning the heat down to the lowest level. Pillows were very soft and they couldn’t provide firmer ones although they did provide extra pillows to try to help.

Beware noisy neighbours too! Our apartment was next to a smaller one on the same plot occupied by noisy Americans enjoying their hot tub outside our son’s bedroom till very late affecting his sleep too.

However overall, I would stay here again. Service was friendly at all times.

This is one of the nicest hotels in Iceland. It’s conveniently located in the Golden Circle route, although is around 15 minutes from the closest town. There are several individual buildings where the rooms are located, each having a couple shared hot tubs which were very clean. The rooms and beds are large and comfy. The included breakfast was a delicious buffet with many options. There’s a lounge area in the restaurant with a nice fireplace and bar where we met a group of locals and had a great time. Highly recommend if you’re touring around the Golden Circle southern Iceland.

The room we had, a superior double, was large, modern, clean and very well equipped. It was in one of the small separate blocks located around the grounds, but only a short walk (or very short drive if it was raining) from reception and the restaurant. The bed was very comfortable and the pillows reasonably so. There was a small patio with two chairs and a table outside the room and this was fairly well sheltered from the wind, and quite a sun trap when the sun was out. Blackout lining to the curtains helped sleeping during the long hours of daylight.
Although we didn’t use it, there was a hot tub outside for use by the six rooms in our block, with robes and slippers provided in the room.
Although we would highly recommend the hotel, we did feel it was let down a little by dinner in its restaurant. The choice and quality of the food was very average and certainly didn’t justify the “fine dining” price tag. Like everywhere in Iceland it seems, wine was very expensive too. Breakfast, however, was excellent and included in the room price.
The hotel is classified as 5 star but, in my opinion, the poor dining experience suggests it is only 4 star.

We stayed in 10 places over 10 days and this hotel was fine... but not 5 star quality. It did not have blackout curtains. The bed was fine. The shower pressure and temperature fluctuated depending on who else was using water in other rooms. The rooms had little noise damper between the walls. The views from the room were not great. The breakfast buffet was ok - only 1 waffle maker (for making your own waffles) for the number of guests that attended the breakfast, was wholly inadequate. The line was so long we didn't get any waffles. The most it had going for it was the location on the golden circle. Staff was nice.

The Hotel Grimsborgir is a good hotel nicely located in the Golden Circle. We had an "apartment" which had 2 bedrooms, a mini kitchen and a common area. It was good, not great. We liked the two separate bedrooms and the common area was comfortable but the whole place could have used updating. The bathroom was very dark and the shower was vile and kept getting clogged. The night we arrived there was a road closure (obviously not the fault of the hotel) so we couldn't get into Selfoss for our planned dinner. We wound up eating at the hotel which was extremely stuffy and old fashioned, though the food was tasty. Our biggest issue is that none of the staff (waiters, front desk, etc) were wearing masks which made us extremely uncomfortable while we were eating. We didn't have much of a choice (where to eat) but during a pandemic, I would have thought in a service environment that the staff would have been more considerate of it's guests. Biggest plus of the hotel was it's great location in the bottom of the Golden Circle region.

We were advised by our guide to book here. Over priced, awful rooms. We couldn’t sleep all night because the rooms had connected terraces, there were drunks on our terrace. We were afraid to sleep because the only window to keep the room cool at night was right next to the door latch. Food was nothing much to talk about. Room was too tight and hot all night. The Hilton canopy in Reykjavík cost as much as here and here you get only a superior room for the price, and at Hilton you can get a one bedroom suite.

We had a lovely 9 nights stay during which we explored the Golden Circle. The hotel consists of several buildings arranged in a circle in the middle of a natural Icelandic landscape. The first building from the entrance is where the reception and the restaurant are, so keep in mind the walk from your building to the restaurant and don't forget to bring an umbrella when it's raining.

The room we had was very spacious with a lovely view through the fields towards the distant mountains. It had a well-stacked mini-bar, as you would expect from a 5-star hotel. We also had a wide terrace.

The restaurant is really good, and although the menu doesn't provide a ton of options, each dish is obviously made with care and attention to detail. It seemed to have a bit higher prices than a regular restaurant in Reykjavik, but it had an even higher quality of the service and the food. There was also live music there every night.

The hotel staff were very friendly and quick to respond to any need we had. They would also provide suggestions about activities and places you might want to check out.

All in all we had a wonderful experience at Hotel Grimsborgir and highly recommend it.

My husband and I stayed here for two nights and very much enjoyed our experience. However, I feel that I should better set expectations for other travelers who may have experienced luxury hotels in the past.

The staff was pleasant and friendly. The room was clean. The hot tubs were shared but lovely. The view was superb. We even spotted a rainbow the first night. I thought the bathroom was well done outside of the plastic shower curtain, and I liked the bath products.

All that said, it really isn't a luxury experience. Some of the furniture is literally from Ikea (the pax wardrobe system). The swan towels were cute, and the electric fireplace was cozy... but again, not really luxury stuff. The restaurant seemed like something very much out of Mrs Mazel. The cocktail list is outdated (cosmos anyone?). The wine offerings were both expensive and particularly bad. For example... Kirkland Sangria (yep, Costco brand) for over $100 USD. No baggage help, etc.

Listen, I may be able to list these things because they're billing themselves as a 5 star luxury experience, and I want to prepare people. But I have to go back to the good because if you set your expectations, you will truly have a lovely time here. The location is INCREDIBLE, and the view is why I chose Iceland in the first place. I would absolutely come back.

This hotel is perfect for touring nearby sites. Good breakfast, the chef made special vegetarian meal for dinner upon request. Front desk staff was much helpful, particularly Claudia. Due to extreme weather, I wasn't sure about road conditions, but Claudia took time to explain things to me carefully and encouraged me to make the drive. She wet above and beyond to make my stay comfortable. Thank you Claudia!

I will start by saying I don't like writing negative reviews. But sorry to say, of the 5 hotels we stayed at during our 12 day trip to Iceland, this one was the worst.

The bad:

There were no bath towels in our room (only a couple of hand towels) when we checked in. I had to walk all the way up to the main building to get them.

There were no sheers or blinds under the blackout curtains. With people constantly walking past our large window, we had no choice but to close the blackout curtains for privacy, even during the day. Yet, we noticed when we walked by other rooms that many of them had lace sheers. We did not pay a cheap price for our room, so not sure why something so basic was missing.

The hot tubs, while a nice touch, felt unclean with all the spider webs and soot around. The only good thing about the spider webs were that they caught some of the hundreds of black gnats swarming around the tubs.

The good:

The restaurant offered a great breakfast and delicious dinner. Had it not been for this, I would have rated this hotel 1 star.

We would never stay here again. It's a deceptive practice to bill something as 5 stars when it is nowhere near that. Not worth the price paid - would definitely explore other options in the area for better value for the money.

Hi I am pretty sure that the difference is the hot tub being in a shared terrace space for the junior suite and the hot tub being private in the gallery suite. We stayed in a house with a private tub which was lovely. I do remember the terrace of the junior suites with a hot tub that guests share. The hotel was quiet while we were there so nobody was really sharing but I personally would prefer the gallery suite with my private hot tub. Hope this answer helps and do check with the hotel if I am right. Good luck.

Does anyone know roughly how much transport is from the airport to this hotel?
Answer from Ioan-Teodor T
3 contributions
Probably between 200 and 300 € for a shuttle. I'd recommend renting a car from the airport. Not much to do in the middle of nowhere without a car. It's part of the charm of the place that it is both remote and luxurious. But I can not imagine one could have any benefit from not getting a rental car in Iceland. Unless one plans on meeting up with Friends that have a car at the hotel and just needs to get there from the airport.

Without a car you will have no other option but the hotel restaurant. The good news - restaurant is OK. Hotel consists of several buildings, so you will have to walk to the restaurant. Book the table to be on a safe side.

Answer from Hotel Grimsborgir
Selfoss, Iceland
Hello, The hotel is located in the countryside, 10 minutes from Selfoss the closest town. It is on the golden circle route so there are many activities and things to see and do around the area. You can do the golden circle one day or even do part of it in one day and the other half on another day because there are many small stops and interesting things to do. You can also go to the south coast on one of the days. There is an outdoor swimming pool in selfoss which is only 10 minutes drive from us, and also other pools in all of the towns around us, as well as natural pools such as: Secret Lagoon and Fontana Spa (in Fontana Spa they also bake rye bread in the ground in the natural hot springs around them and you can join a short tour to see how they bake and taste it) You can do horse riding on one of the farms in the area, which can be great fun for both children and adults. Hveragerði is a town about 20 minute drive from here, where there are a lot of hot spring around and inside the town, there are green houses there (Where they even grow bananas!) and also a hot river which you can hike up to and bathe in the natural hot river. It takes about 1 hour to hike up to the river, but the accesibility depends on the weather when you are here. If you are coming now in the winter months it might be more complicated to access the path up the mountain to the river. Snow mobiling - you can do snow mobiling from Gullfoss waterfall. There can be two persons on each snowmobile so you could take the children with you or you can pay a little extra to have one of the children to go with one of the guides if you prefer. There are even more things you can do around here so if you have anything specific in mind, please do not hesitate to contact us via e-mail. Best regard, María Brá Finnsdóttir General Manager
