African Rock Lodge, situated in a wildlife estate, offers luxury thatched-roof accommodation with a private patio. It features an outdoor pool with sun terrace, a rustic bar, a guest lounge with flat screen TV, and a large braai (bbq) area. All of our air-conditioned rooms include a seating area and king-sized bed, tea & coffee facilities, mini-bar, Wi-Fi internet and mosquito nets. The en-suite bathrooms have double washbasins, a double shower (normal & rain shower), a bath, toilet and toiletries. Our accommodation is catered (breakfast and optional dinner). Taking that well-earned break will NEVER be the same without the "finishing touches" of your hosts Sander & Juliet. Giraffe, waterbuck, warthog, kudu, wildebeest, zebra and nyala are commonly seen. The Estate is perfect for walking, driving and mountain biking among the game. At night the nocturnal wildlife is just as plentiful, the calls of the hyenas are as loud as the millions of stars in the sky are bright. We offer Bed & Breakfast and/or Dinner Bed & Breakfast. Close to the Blyde River Canyon, Kruger National Park and several private game reserves where game drives can be organised.

What a wonderful experience at this relaxing and well-appointed lodge. Sander and his staff make you feel right at home. The evening dinner cookout was fantastic. And, from the lodge patio, you can easily experience warthogs nearby. We would highly recommend this lodge and staff for your next experience.

We stayed here for 6 nights, taking advantage of the lodge's Elephant package plus one extra night, and we couldn't have asked for more.
Each activity in the package was excellent and Sander was more than willing to arrange further activities if required - my wife took a horse ride through the bush on our extra day and couldn't have been more thrilled.
Dinner each night was absolutely top notch - the best food we had during our trip to South Africa. Sander prepared 4 types of meat each evening on the braai, beef, chicken and 2 others that varied like ostrich, springbok, impala etc, all cooked to perfection. The sides from the buffet included the usual suspects like chips, potatoes, veg, etc but also included local dishes for you to try (I could not get enough of the chakalaka). All this served in a beautiful setting under the African sky with the tables lit by simple lights.
The rooms had everything you needed and sitting on your patio watching a warthog or kudu stroll by not 3 feet away is something you won't forget.
Both Sander and Juliet were a pleasure to be with during our stay, it felt like you were staying with friends. Hopefully one day we can return.

Our group of eight, friends from different cities, did the 5-night African Rock Lodge “Elephant Package” from Sept. 17-22, 2022. The package included lodging, dinner each day, breakfasts, airport transfers, and daily activities. There was a full day safari in Kruger National Park, boat ride on the Blyde River, full day of scenic stops at Blyde River Canyon, visit to the Moholoholo Rehab Center and afternoon/evening drive in a private reserve. The tours were conducted by private companies.

The most outstanding part of our trip was the warm, friendly, welcoming atmosphere provided by Sander, his wife Juliet (the main chef), and the staff. We also really enjoyed the peace and tranquility of the wildlife estate where the lodge is located. The accomodations and grounds were clean, comfortable and each meal was a delicious variety. Even the Dom Pablo dessert made with amarula and ice cream was amazing. Drink service and meals were awesome and we most likely sampled every wine available. Each and every request was met with a smile.

South Africa has huge electricity generation issues and power is rationed every day on different schedules. The lodge provided a rechargable light and candles which helped. We all purchased "load shedding" shirts for a fun photograph.

I was disappointed in the small numbers of animals seen at both Kruger and the private reserve. It was cold and raining the afternoon we visited the private reserve so they may have been hunkered down. Also, the guide was not very talkative or engaging and I would rate that tour only a “2”.

We saw giant cats in fenced areas at the rehab center and a couple of white lions at Kruger. Bush babies hung out in the trees outside our room and visited us at night. They were cute and fun to watch. Some warthogs also visited the lodge and a couple of giraffes were near the road in the neighborhood.

Toward the end of our 2 week South Africa visit we did a 4 day 3 night safari in Hluhluwe Imfolozi reserve and saw more animals and birds than at Kruger and the Hoedspruit area. However, the welcoming spirit of the people here made it an awesome visit.

This place has it all if you are after a unique experience close to nature at the same time as close to Safari´s in the area. Stroll down the road in the afternoon and walk amongst grass eating animals like giraffs and zebras. The food and service is perfect. It has everything you need. The owners are fantastic and knows the little extras to make you feel special for them during your stay. Everyone I spoke to that stayed there at the same time was also amazed by this fantastic lodge. I highly recommend it and will 100% stay here again when I come back. And I will.

My family and I stayed at the African Rock Lodge for just one night during our 18 day trip in South Africa - and I wish we had had stayed for so much longer. The proprietors were the most wonderful, warm, and welcoming couple! The rooms we had were luxurious and beautifully appointed and the common areas (outside dining, pool) were likewise tasteful and beautiful.

The entire facility, which only hosts a very small number of people emanates such a feeling of peace and tranquility which is exactly what I needed as a rest day in between Kruger and flying on to Cape Town.

We enjoyed both dinner and breakfast while staying here, and both were delicious. Eggs are made to order when you arrive in the morning, and the braii at night is *chef's kiss* perfect. My son and I fell in love with their chaka-laka sauce (apologies for misspelling it!) - try it with everything!

The hotel is located within a nature reserve and there are walking paths in the neighborhood so you can enjoy a walk or a bikeride and see what kind of South African wildlife is around.

In the morning, our hosts drove us to the Hoedspruit airport and helped us get checked in as well.

Thank you Sander and Juliet for a lovely visit! Hoping to get back your way one of these days!

Spent 2 nights at African Rock Lodge mid October. Was a real treat! Sander is an incredible host - nothing is too much for him. Advises where to visit and also routes to places one might be going on to e.g. the KNP. His wife, Juliet, has decorated the place beautifully and the food that is cooked is delicious specially at the braai Sander made one evening. The room is lovely, cosy, gorgeous beds. The pool is a super blue color and the main building very artistic as is the African dining room. My only suggestion would be for them to plant a bit more stuff outside the rooms before the trees start - it is very sandy and not so attractive. I think that could be improved but otherwise almost perfect. I would highly recommend ARL and send thanks for Sander and Juliet for their wonderful hospitality.

What a great way to start our trip. Sander & Juliette we’re so lovely, also very helpful when it came to booking safaris. The room was perfect and had everything we needed, with lots of little extras too - all very much appreciated! There’s a nice pool where you can relax after a busy day and if it’s not too hot you can take a walk into the local Bush to see zebra, giraffe and impala. Lots of warthogs roaming too, quite an experience! The breakfasts are good with plenty of choice. There is also a bbq every evening with lots of different meats to try, including impala & ostrich! There are restaurants locally but you have to drive as there are no taxis. Everyone seemed very relaxed about it and it certainly wasn’t a problem for us. Sander even offered to drive us. All in all a great experience.

Our family (wife, mother in-law, father in-law and myself) had the pleasure of staying here and booking the elephant package.

Originally we booked our stay in September of 2019 for a 2020 trip. Due to lockdowns and travel restrictions, we finally were able to take our trip in July 2021. Thanks to Sander for working with us to rebook this stay.

We had the pleasure of meeting Sander, Juliet and their incredible family and spending 5 great days with them.

The lodge and accommodations are everything we had hoped for with the spacious rooms, private patios and relaxing common areas. The entire facility is well kept, comfortable and very safe feeling.

Sander had set the perfect itinerary for our stay and even was kind enough to do a few drives around the area for us to see animals in the property and take us for a local shopping trip for items that we were looking for. If you need to get tested for your return trip, it is also just down the road.

The meals were exceptional every day. Juliet and Sander cooked for us on the Braai every evening and all the dishes varied each day. We were able to try items that we had not had before and enjoyed each one every time. It is just to bad we can not have these again until we return. The breakfast were great and had more than what we could try each day.

Every excursion we took was excellent and at the right pace to enjoy each day while having a little downtime to relax. Nothing felt rushed and each day was an experience to remember.

Unfortunately the time passed quicker than we liked and we had to return home. Would have liked to have spent a few more days enjoying the facilities and wildlife that would roam right into the area each day to view while relaxing on the porch or common areas.

We look forward to a return trip and spending more time at this great facility. Thank you again Sander and Juliet, we look forward to a return visit and spending time with you again.

We stayed at the African Rock Lodge a year ago. For those of you considering staying here, do so! The accomodations were very lovely and Sander was extremely helpful when we told him we were heading to Blyde River Canyon, he gave us maps and tips about trails to hike, places to go to and a very cool place to eat. My only regret is that we didn't stay more than 1 night.

Good afternoon, Thank you for your message. We do have adaptors available for use in the room. Just ask us upon arrival to supply you with the correct ones. Insect repellent is available in the room, which is a natural, deet-free product. If you prefer stronger, chemical products, those should be brought by yourselves. We do have a supermarket at 10 minutes drive from the lodge, in case we don't provide the product you desire. Feel free to ask any further question, I'll be happy to assist. Regards, Sander

Are the game drives included? If not, what is the average price of the trips?
Answer from SanderDN
Hoedspruit, South Africa2 contributions
Dear Bruna, Thank you for your question. No, there are no activities included in the price of the accommodation. (However, we have a few packages on our website where activities are included.) There are plenty of different activities to choose from so an average price is difficult to give. I will be happy to send you the activity price list by mail, if you don't mind to contact me by clicking on the "email hotel" link on my listing. Also, please advise your travel dates as the prices depend slightly on when you travel as well. Regards, Sander

Hoedspruit, South Africa2 contributions
Dear Husain, Thank you for your interest! In general I also recommend to hire a car in Jo'burg and drive to Hoedspruit by yourselves, the drive is 5hours and the main benefit is that you have more flexibility to move around the area whilst here, the flight to Hoedspruit is quite expensive and especially for a family it will financially make more sense to hire a car. Even the Kruger national park can be driven by yourself, in which case you only pay entrance fees (R280 per person), and petrol of course. There are different options for game drives on private big 5 game reserves in the area, as well as full day Kruger trips in an open vehicle. With your own car, you would also be flexible to do the panorama route (blyde river canyon) in a day trip by yourselves easily (I will give you a map at the lodge).. I mailed you with details. I can assist you with the bookings of activities if you would like. Kindest Regards, Sander
