Pros: Free breakfast! Pool was clean Manager was friendly and gave us some good local tips. Right on the beach Free parking Hot showers Well equipped kitchen Food lockers Cons: Wifi was poor. No hand soap or hand towel in the bathroom of the dorm, these are not usually carried by backpackers... Laundry was sooooo expensive, sadly we didn’t have a choice but this was annoying!

Spontaneous we were booking a trip to Durban and then we found this wonderful place very close to the beach! It is affordable and very close to the beach. Michael is a very nice guy and he also helped us on planning daily trips. The breakfast was small but got everything we needed. There is a cute dog that will definitely welcome you! The rooms also have a very nice view to the ocean. When you decide to stay there it is worth to get up at 5 to watch the sunrise

Travelling from a cold & wet Edinburgh, I was welcomed into On The Beach with friendly faces. The staff were prompt & got me settled with a tour of the premises, ensuring I knew all that was necessary. My room was clean & comfortable, with a beautiful view of the beach which was just across the road. I spent a week at On The Beach with no issues. When it came to sight-seeing, the manager was super helpful and gave me great advice of where to go & how to get there. They even offered to drop me off central which was roughly a 15 minute drive. I got to experience both city and suburban life as it was in between the two & had a great selection of shopping & restaurants nearby. The days I spent in where spent by the pool and on the beach which was really convenient. There are also pets on the premises which added a homey feel & offered me a lot of company which I loved. I look forward to visiting again.

I had booked this property due its prime location to the beach Via Agoda.com. The issues started even before i had arrived. When i had phoned ahead to check whether there was a secure parking on the premises the gentleman(who did not identity him self) that answered the phone seemed to be distracted and flustered. I had asked the question in regards to the secure parking on the premises I was told to check the website. This was the first red flag. When my friend and I arrived we had asked for twin beds.We got a double. Not sure who is at fault ; Agoda.com or Durban Back packers. Not wanting to seem unreasonable we decided to simply accept and get settled in. When we decided to take a closer look at the bedding and furnishing they seemed to be quite rundown/old and stained. One of the window latches did not work which did pose a security risk. The safe provided was a quite small and with out a key to lock it. I ended up locking our valuables in my car while we went out. The was also some young men loitering outside the gate across the road which gawked and looked at rooms in a manner that would unnerve most. The same group of men returned at about 3h00am and continuously rang the doorbell and shouted. There are also a very sweet dog and cat on the premises so if you have allergies steer clear. Some might find the fact that the cat sits on the couches a bit distasteful , but i was fine with it. The wifi router does not reach the patio or breakfast area or it is spotty at best. There was also some issues with the power as our room was with out for about 10-15 min, this poses a problem if you are charging your electronics if there is a surge you might have some damage done to those items. Mike the caretaker did his best to remove the men loitering and had called the police in morning. He is the truest asset that the property has and even apologised for the disturbance. We were understanding on this point. The rooms are in need of some TLC as well.
