This is an interesting boutique hotel in Norwood, a lively suburban part of Johannesburg with many restaurants within walking distance and most places of interest within an easy drive.
We stayed just over a week and had two different rooms, see the notes below, unfortunately the rooms without the early morning banging were also the smaller rooms without a refrigerator.
The hotel staff were superb and cannot be faulted, so helpful and friendly.
The only meal served in this hotel is breakfast and my suggestion would be to book in as bed only and have breakfast at one of the restaurants around the corner. In the hotel there are only two cooked items on the menu, fried eggs or omelet and the cook can prepare neither.

What a great job they have done with renovating what was previously a cool dive. Now its a very cool boutique hotel, beautifully done and very affordable. Staff are absolutely wonderful, speak a mutlitude of languages and the lounge bar is really cool and drinks very reasonably priced. It even has a very good spa attached and for those who only eat Kosher food, two of the best Kosher joints are just around the corner.

Living in ghana I knew about power outage, but the hotel should have a generator it does not, power goes out any time and will stay out for hours.the pictures on the site show beautiful cozy suites, that's a joke, the rooms are like old time 1980 version. The lounge chair legs just fell off anything we put on it was light. If you from the states please bring wash clothes african don't use them, but still it a hotel. I assume they are working on the remodel cause the stairs carpet and wall are full of Water. Never ever again..I can say you are surrounded by lots of store, restaurants and shops.

The Management were pathetic. My check in was horrific due to:
Manager of the hotel (Charmeeze) had an un-friendly ,un-welcoming and problematic attitude. She told me that guests book online for a long stay and then don't end up paying for that stay, but for the period they booked. I told her that I am not one of those guests and will pay upfront for 2 nights at a time as I have done before. She immediately made me feel as though I didn't or was not going to pay, yet I have for the entire stay.
2) The so called owner( Mr Andile under correction as he refused to give his name) and then partner (same man)of the property rudely intervened with an unwarranted statement that guests don't pay and that ends up being his problem. He also mentioned that he set up all the systems for all Tsogo Sun and AHA properties and that they report to him. I opposed his claim as I personally know the heads of Tsogo Sun and Aha being a former hotelier myself. I informed him that there is no need to lie to somebody you don't know in order to boost your self esteem. I don't respect such people being it an owner or not.
3) This was my wife's first stay and my 15 month old son. They were not even greeted, welcomed or my son was not even played with as a baby. That just goes to show their guest services.
4) I was discreetly judged probably due to the way in which I was dressed (shabby) , therefore not taken seriously, but I'm sure if I had a suite on then perhaps I won't have received such disgust and would have looked as though I can afford to pay.
5) After a few days within the stay staff who were good to us, were getting threatened and informed by both these individuals (management)that their jobs are on the line and not to share any information with us.

Hotel is a bit old and danky.
During check-in, the agent ripped my passport.
Management promised they would cover the replacement.
They've been ignoring me since. I've been messaging the manager but she's been ignoring me.

Checked in with a large group and the staff did the best the could with such a large group. The people who work here are so friendly and kind. The management has done a great job training the staff.

I typically stay at larger Marriott properties. This was a different experience. The room had an actual key to get into the room. The room itself was just ok, nothing fancy. The hotel was really small and only had rooms on a few floors. If you are into small, initimate hotels, this could be for you. The staff and the service was great, which made the stay very good.

Thank you for your long and lovely review on our staff. The Ascot is a very small (as you know) boutique hotel and the boutique way is very different to a main stream large roomed hotel. The service will always be better at a smaller hotel but it is not everyones cup of tea - boutique style. None the less we hope that you enjoyed your time with us whilst visiting our country Thank you The Ascot Team

I stayed at the Ascot Hotel for about a week in Johannesburg before traveling on wards to my teaching program in Madagascar. The people who work at this hotel were so sweet and accommodating for me. After the first three nigh they already knew what I ate and made sure I had a full breakfast prior to leaving for tours during the day. I had a few staff members sit with me at dinner to discuss the National Parks I went to visit as I am a big advocate for conservation. The rooms/bathrooms were clean and the bed comfortable and clean. Overall, I had such an enjoyable time here when I checked out, I had staff members giving me hugs and calling me family.

My husband made the booking on booking.com. He assumed it was a good area because it is located near to Houghton....but he was wrong! The hotel is directly opposite a very noisy and ugly apartment block. The rooms were clean and the bathrooms were decent; however, the water took ages to heat up and was never hot enough to have a good shower. We could hear all the banging and scraping of the guests above us and had a very poor nights rest because of the noise. The breakfast was average too. The staff were friendly and accommodating especially when pushed. As a family with teens, we requested rooms next to each other; at the onset they said it was not possible, but at the persuasion of my husband, about 10 minutes later they could. All in all an average experience. I wish he had made the booking at a known international brand rather.

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. We are glad that you found the rooms and bathrooms clean as that is how we present ourselves to our guests. I suppose everyone's experience is different and some prefer the larger less homely hotels - as long as we addressed your issues - which it sounds like we did, we can only apologise that you did not enjoy the small boutique hotel experience Thank you The Ascot Team

Maybe not an obvious choice for people, but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with this hotel.

The lobby is small but nicely done. Staff are very professional and courteous. The room was a good size, and clean. The bed was short buy comfy. The bathroom was very nice. Loved the walk-in shower. Nice balcony. (though not much of a view).

Wifi worked fine.

Good selection of restaurants nearby.

While it's maybe not a destination hotel, if you need to be in the area, I think it's a pretty solid choice.

Thank you for your lovely words about our little boutique hotel. We appreciate all positive feedback from our guests - and are especially happy when we know we have ticked all the right boxes! The hotel is set in an Urban environment, much like many European hotels, so unfortunately we wish we had a sea view - or a wonderful view of gardens, but we are set in an urban node filled with the safe hustle and bustle of a small neighbourhood - in the heart of Norwood. It's extremely safe to walk around the area, visit restaurants and just be a part of this eclectic environment - thank you and we hope to welcome you again soon ...

We were not able to add the rest of the email address to the question above because Tripadvisor's site does not allow for HTML or website links to be included, however, in our email to the Ascot, we did have the proper contact address. Thanks!
