I recently stayed at Africa Centre Lodge in Benoni. I got a prompt free pick up from the airport. On my arrival I had noticed that they have moved premises and the management is new. I must say that the service is really stepped up from my last visit. I felt at home the moment I walked into the lodge. The breakfast in the morning was fantastic, as most would say, 10 out of 10. It has good atmosphere where I found tranquility and peacefulness. They got even a free WI-FI awesome for my business views and social networking of course. I have spend my evening around they heated pool and the experience, was a blessing. I must add that the indoor gym kept me in shape for few days. Wish I have stayed longer and will most certainly tell my friends and recommend to anyone the new Africa Centre.

I don’t know where to start even! This is the worst thing ever happened to me, and I have travelled a bit… I am also a 20+ years hospitality veteran, so what I experienced at Africa Centre is a shame for the complete industry. The worst is that I found out that this has been going on for a long time, even other lodge owners know about it, but there seems nobody from an official tourism office to have gotten wind of it. Back in September, I had booked two nights for first week of November and made the transfer as requested. I had not checked reviews on the hotel as I had stayed there a few years back and it was a very successful place, lively and good value for money. Little did I know what happened over the past months that the owners had split up and the place is completely run-down. When I called Zaneta (one of the owners) for the pick up from the airport she informed me that there is no electricity in the hotel. Well, out of experience I know that power cuts are common in Africa, ad also in Jo-burg, so I did not further think of it as being a big problem. Once we arrived at the hotel, I had a weird feeling as I could not see many people and all neighbouring places had electricity. I was brought to a room and pointed out a candle. I fumbled with the little candle light for my small torch in my luggage. Then I saw there was no towel and not even soap in the room. So I went out to find someone, this is when I really had a strange feeling. Finally I found a lady who promised to bring the items to the room. I asked if there was any chance of getting some dinner, but was told that due to lack of electricity that is not possible. Instead I was told to walk out of the residential area to the next shopping center. So, in walked all by myself (not a good thing to do in Jo-burg, specially as a female), not knowing exactly where but I managed to find a gas station and some fast food restaurants. When I returned to the Africa Centre, I noticed a young man with luggage trying to find somebody for check-in. It turned out he had been there the week prior for one night and then also there was no electricity. So clearly, they have not paid their bills. The next morning in daylight I could only see the extent of the disaster (see photos). The grounds are completely in a mess, the pool is overgrown with algae, the furniture dirty. I went to the reception to find it closed. Finally I found the lady from the previous night and she informed me Zaneta was gone to get breakfast which would be ready at 8 am. I looked around and noticed garbage all over the place. The eating area was absolutely filthy! There were two cables fixed together with some tape, and a guy stepped on it causing a fire from the cables. He managed to put it out with his shoes. I demanded my money back, but Zaneta said she did not have any money to pay me back. I went back to the airport to find another place which of course I had to pay for again in full. Even after several emails, Zaneta has not responded. This place must be officially closed so that no more people get ripped off. Amazingly, Zaneta has well-manicured nails and drives a big Mercedes…

I was scheduled to stay at the African Centre Hotel, 65 Sunny Rd Lakefield, Benoni, I had EFT’d the payment of R1200 for my two night stay and received a thank you note and confirmation of my paid booking. When I arrived I was informed that the hotel was closed down and that the owner, Zaneta, would find me other accommodation in the area. So I called her and she promised to come right back to me. Twenty minutes later, I called her and she had turned her phone off and her land line went to voice mail. An hour later, nothing had changed despite at least a dozen calls to her. She was clearly avoiding me. So I had to find alternative accommodation at Birtchwood, and spend more money. I also want other travelers to be made aware that the hotel is not operational and that they don’t get caught out like I did. Fraud is fraud,

Friends of ours who come every year suggested we come here for our overnight before flying out. The hotel grounds were nice and the room adequate. The food was ok nothing special. There was a bit of confusion with our day trip to Soweto and the driver was not too interested. The BBQ place he took us for lunch though was very tasty. This was not the highlight of our trip but it was just an overnight so was fine.......not sure I would stay again and surprised our friends like it so much!

This place is a VENUS Flytrap. Looks good on the outside and totally disgusting and dirty on the inside. Complimentary Tea/Coffee tray was dirty from previous guest. Room and bedding was unchanged (looked discoloured). Towels were torn and frayed on edges - and very discoloured. One almost feel sick with disgust on entering the room. There is no hot water in the mornings. The toilets don't flush properly, the hand basins do not flow. Breakfast is a definite NO, as this is bought from somewhere else, and is rather cold and unappetising. The kitchen is FILTHY. This Hotel is UNSAFE and house a lot of young and rowdy people, hang around the pub area...not sure if they are paying guests. They party until early hours of the morning without the consideration of other guests. If you are traveling as a family - This hotel is NOT FAMILY FRIENDLY...!!!!!!!! I will NOT recommend this Hotel to anyone. We were locked out of our room. No supervisor and no management visible after 5pm. NEVER EVER AGAIN, DONT GO THERE...!!!

NEVER AGAIN - DONT GO THERE !!!!!!!!!!! We choose the hotel because of the location and because of the facilities and because they arranged a 3 day Krüger Safari for us. Facilities/Services Restaurant on premises - closed Internet- not working Heated pool - not heated Safe Deposit box - not existing Reception - opened 7.45h instead of 6 am Breakfast - 8.15h instead of 6.30 am and only after several complaints Jacuzzi and Sauna - not in operation /working Pick up for the Safari - 1015h in stead of 8 am as told. NONE OF THE SERVICES OFFERED WAS AVAILIBLE. Our experiences and information from officals. Since there was no restaurant the driver took us to a restaurant and picked us up there again. When coming back at around 830pm the parking lot of the hotel was full of police and policecars. Also the next morning there was there police again. This was a very unpleasant and frightning situation when you get to know what has happend. We were supposed to leave our luggage in the hotel and stay another night after the safari. Since the place was for us no more safe safe at all we had to take all our lugguge along to the Safari....our whole arrangement was prepaid and we informed the hotel (Sarah) that we will not come back after the safari and requested another hotel. This was agreed and Zaneta(very rude) would inform us during the safari about the new hotel. Never got Info. Called several times and sent SMS. Finally we where told that we would not get another hotel ( 3hrs before we arrived). This via SMS. So we had to find a hotel by our selves even though we prepaid 3months ago. For the safari we booked a treehouse which we didnt get. BUT THE WORST OFF ALL AFRICA CENTRE AIRPORT LEISURE HOTEL , 65 Sunny Road,Lakefield, Benoni !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Been there once and wouldn't dare to do it again, Bugs in the Room, poor customer service, pictures are misleading. To be avoided also taking price in account, Maybe only decent part of stay was the breakfast (served anyway in a very crowded room)

Having stayed here in 2009 and been impressed with the service and budget, we opted to return for a further night in April 2012 as part of a transit through Africa. Since our last visit the hotel has gone down in standards and customer service. It looks tired and in need of a major overhall. We booked the couresty collection from the airport after a long flight from the UK. Despite a long wait for the driver and numerous telephone calls we were eventually picked up. It transpired that he had left without taking the passenger names, or a board to identify him. He didn't know who he was collecting and we didnt know what he looked like .............................. The rooms had been vacated earlier in the day by an Overland company and didnt appear to have been cleaned. My mother bent down to retrieve an item she had dropped under the bed and discovered a used sanitary towel attached to a pair of knickers. The staff didnt appear took shocked by this and eventually came to clean the room. The rooms smelt of smoke and needed a lick of paint, the electrics looked questionable and I don't think health and safety is top of the agenda. The food was ok, we didnt need to wait too long compared to some traveller reviews and the bar was close by, even if they had failed to restock after the last guests had left. It is a shame it has gone so down hill as it is close to the airport and located behind large safety gates, but it is a cheap hotel and you get what you pay for.

Do not stop here. We booked for one night as a stop over in Johannesburg before flying out again, so wanted something at a reasonable price. The free shuttle was appealing, and to be fair the driver was ready and waiting when we landed. When we got to the hotel, we had to wait for about 30 minutes before we could get into the reception. The receptionist then turned up with a large MacDonald's bag, she had obviously popped out for supper but forgot to apologise to us!! The rooms were very old and tired, the bed sheets did not look clean. We did have complimentary tea/coffee but there was not 1 cup without a big chip in it! In the morning we found out that mum and dad in the room next door never even had towels! Breakfast was a joke........there were at least 8 guests for breakfast sharing 4 small sausages, a spoonful of beans and a bit of salad. We felt sorry for the waitress, she said she had told her boss they needed more food. It felt like this business is in trouble as I'm sure it has been a lot better in the past. Thank goodness we were only there for 8 hours!
