Destination: Marsa-Alam, is the gateway to the exiting Southern Red Sea and its myriad pristine reefs, holidays in Marsa-Alam are about blue skies, stunning beaches and zero distractions. This secluded place may have grown from a fishing village, but it's still undeveloped enough to put peace-seekers on cloud nine. Its seas hide an amazing array of tropical fish and corals. This hotel is lovely but in the middle of nowhere, and everything is geared towards the Italians (not even the reception desk understood English). And a word of warning about the transfer from the airport, its at least an hour and a half, and thats without dropping other holiday makers off at other hotels.
If you want to do nothing more than lie about during the day soaking up sun and eating good food (great food if like fish, which I dont) and having an early night then this is the place to do it.
Apparently there are activities by the entertainment staff, but since we were the only English in the hotel at the time we did not get to find out about them, in fact we were just ignored for the whole week.
The house reef is great, morays, eagle ray and barracuda off the pier, although expect a couple of days out of seven to be choppy with poor visability and the red flag to stop you getting in the water.
The diving is really expensive compared to Sharm and its almost all shore dives. Expect to pay a lot more than you planned as everytime you get in the water you pay park fees of 15 Euro (at the dolphin reef its 25 Euro to get in the water which was bereft of dolphins but a lovely cave dive to compensate).
And at the end of the dives our bill was converted from Euros into Egyptian (no idea what rate they used) but at least we have a 20% discount card for life for any other dives with the company !!!!!
The trip to turtle bay is good as there are turtles, but the dive is no deeper than 10 meters, and you may loose your mask due to the diver and snorkeller soup.
Overall a good hotel, but a poor service if you dont speak Italian.

First and foremost, this hotel has been included in the portfolio of a mayor italian tour operator, so expect more than 90% of guests to be italians.

We've been there end of August grilling ourselves at 43 celsius, luckily the place is windy therefore idling on the beach has been a pleasure.
The breeze unfortunately can turn the sea quite hard to swim into sometimes, anyhow the well built pier helps you to dive beyond the beautifull reef into a crystal clear Red Sea.
The whole hotel, in my opinion, is a little bit outdated and would need a renovation soon, the rooms are indeed huge and clean, if you need the AC to sleep do not forget earplugs.
The cleaning service is very good and the guys are always nice and smiling.
There is only one main restaurant, but on the beach, the bar serves a light lunch at noon and a la carte service at evening (booking required), the overall food quality is quite good, since the majority of guest are italians they managed to have a pasta corner and a pizza oven (only at dinner) so there are plenty of choices available.
Right outside the hotel you may find some shops and a nice beduin tent if you want to sip a mint tea or a coffee or smoke hookah (with very hygenic disposable pipes).
Since the hotel is located in the middle of nothing, there are several day tours availables, you may visit turtle bay, hamata islands or sharm el luli otherwise you can ride a jeep or quad or dromedary or arab horse and pay a visit to a beduin village.
We decided to visit Luxor instead, there is a new road crossing the desert that will take you to Karnak and Luxor temples and the Kings Valley in some 4 hours by bus (it's worth the journey).
The "animation" staff is 100% italian, I really appreciated them especially Terenzio and Achille, but I might understand it's not enjoyable at all if you do not understand italian.

We visited Dolphin Sol Y Mar in November 2010 especially to swim with the dolphins at Dolphin House Reef. Initial impression of reception and entrance is what I would have expected for four star hotels. No British flag though! The food was never piping hot, even when we were first to the buffet. Reception did not go out of way to help with hot water problems. Room made up after 3 pm some days. Had to pay for bottled water on all inclusive. No supplies or erratic service at pool bar. Everything in Italian inc music. No change at reception. Told to go elsewhere for drinks sometimes. No hot water in morning and mid day for shower. No information pack in room for excursions and meal times. Can’t make calls from room phone. Food bland and cold causing tummy bug. Room was clean, no litter and fresh pool towels daily. Pool clean, although not all staff friendly. Staff seemed inpatient. Dive school: disclaimers not in English. Emailed school before and they confirmed dive trips but none where available on arrival at dolphin house. Had to organise own trip to dolphin house as dive school wouldn’t and hotel reception did not go out of way to help. Dive school gave impression there was reef diving but not so as always too windy. Dive instructor inpatient and pushy and rushing us all the time. Was also too quick to follow behind during the diving. Very basic school and not over friendly. Tips: keep food piping hot. Bar stocked. Hot water constant. Free bottled water on all inclusive and if you sell hotel on the basis of regular dolphin house reef trips then make sure there are the trips. Would I stay here again? No. We only booked this hotel because the write up was that there were regular trips to Dolphin House. We generally like Marsa Alam but would definitely stay at a different resort.

Very quiet and clean hotel - perfect for relaxation and lying in the sun.
In december still 25°C and the sea is warmer than the air.
