This place was horrible..We got there at night after driving about five hours from San Jose. Only took a few minutes to look at the room and you can see it was dirty. Walked in the bathroom. The bathroom was dirty. One of the bed sheet was dirty and had a blood stain on it. It was enough for me and my family to walked out of there. I told the manager and the only thing he said to me was I can't do anything right now, is already late to do anything. I was frustrated. I was traveling with my mother, sister, and aunt . Four ladies late at night and no place to stay. I get home from my vacation seven days later to find out they charged my credit card the full amount.

Rooms: The rooms are overall okay and meet the purpose of accommodation. However, you will have to share a room with at least a few rats, cockroaches, bats, worms and spiders. Despite the fact that we told the hotel management about the animals in our room, they failed to care or do anything about it. On a daily basis, we encountered cockroaches in the bathroom, rat poop on the beds and bathroom and vat cries coming form the ceiling. Bathrooms: The bathrooms are not properly cleaned and do not function properly. The toilet keys water run all the time and the showers leak non/stop. Facilities: The facilities do not allow for proper hang-out. If you are looking for a hotel where you can hang out with your friends and/or family, this is not it. The only available place is the dining hall which sits next to other rooms, thus closing at 10:00 pm. Otherwise, the pool area has no sitting area and the pool itself is cold. Location: The hotel lays outside “La fortuna” and sits a stone-throw from the highway. Meaning, you will rely on a car to get around. Also, you will have trouble ignoring the sounds of the cars and trucks in the highway. If you do manage to fall asleep, you’ll constantly dream that you’re being hit by a car (Don’t worry, it’s just a dream). Food: The breakfast is extremely limited and thus very repetitive. The traditional breakfast consists of a small plait of fruit, one egg, rice and beans, a thin slice of plantain, half a piece of toast and a slice of ham. The continental breakfast consists of a small plait of fruit, one egg, a thin slice of plantain, two toasts, a slice of ham and some jelly. Overall: The stay was overall really bad. We did everything we could to stay away from the hotel and we even spent a few hours looking for other options. The management, although kind, is careless and unprofessional. I would avoid “Hotel Jardines Arenal” unless it is more than necessary.

-Warm water only worked with help of employees and for 5 min max- we were advised to take shorter showers- it was raining and cold (said “will be fixed soon”) -Breakfast was cold and coffee was horrible (no substitute for gluten or meat options) -Close to the highway ( the very small pool is right next to it) -Staff talked loudly with each other over long distance in the early morning -cleaning only on demand -Tv worked slowly, fan didn’t work, AC shut down from time to time -WIFI connection very poor!!

My review is based on 2 nights staying there: Pros: -WiFi in room -Decedent bathroom -Lovely bar/sitting area ( I really enjoyed it) -Walking distance to Butterfly garden -Very friendly and helpful staff -I assume cheap because it was booked part by my tour company Cons: -Very very damp Rooms including bedding -Need some major update to the room -Far from downtown (unless you can walk and down the steep hills) -No safe in room The saving grace for this hotel is the great bar/sitting area and the help the staff provided when one of my tour bookings was messed up. That’s why it gets a 3 star instead of 2.

It was just ok. The room was really small and it did have a few mosquitos but the AC worked and it was quiet so it worked for one night. The pool was a lot smaller than we thought it would be, but it had a great view of the volcano. It’s a bit far from town, so would work best if you have a car as there isn’t anything to do near the hotel.

And internet is really bad, even in front of the router. shower. Some folks in the group who stayed at the back rooms complained about putrid smell. One of the guests was smoking. Costa Rica law does not allow smoking everywhere. So when I ask the front desk why they allowed, her response was “Oh they are leaving tomorrow.” She totally missed my point. Do I matter as a guest? Does the enforcement of the law mean anything? Then there is the internet, kept dropping. I stayed at one of the rooms in front. There is no internet in the room. So I stepped out to the lounge, still connection was sporadic. Then there is lighting. The entire room was so dark even when “ONE” lightbulb on. The breakfast was served efficiently where they placed all the coffee and tea and you served yourself.

The best thing about this quaint little hotel is the staff. They are so friendly and make you feel right at home. Eric, who greeted us, spoke excellent English and was especially helpful and accommodating. He gave us directions, tips on where to buy things at less expensive prices and recommended some of the best attractions to see during our stay along. He gave us excellent advice. The gardens are lovely around the property and you can get a good view of the volcano from the back of the hotel. I also enjoyed the free budget friendly breakfast. The only reason I didn't give this property a 5 star rating is because of the road noise. I'm not sure but the rooms at the back of the hotel might be a little quieter. I will stay there again.

It was a good place for relaxation. Not much options for breakfast or eat out. You are far away from the little town. My recommendation is to rent a car. Food is okay. Service is great. I will stay there again.

The rooms were fine, as was breakfast. This was a quick stop towards the end of a week-long trip and the grounds has some interesting flowers. We all had a fun surprise at breakfast with messages from the kitchen.
