It seems that this hotel (formerly Lapis Casa Hotel) is now run by new management. After reading several reviews, we booked the hotel based on its proximity to Xintiandi and the French Concession. The hotel has great potential to become a boutique hotel since it only has 18 rooms. However, we found that the upkeep of the hotel as well as the service was not up to par. We didn't expect luxury, but we at least expected friendly service and a warm atmosphere. The rooms were very dark and lacked proper lighting, the sheets were not fluffy and soft but were made of rough material, the bathrooms were moldy, there were exposed cables under the television, the amenities were in cardboard boxes, breakfast was very poor which included half a slice of sandwich and 1 piece of bacon or ham, and there was a foul smell in the room. Also, the lady at the front desk was not very friendly and seemed to raise her voice at us at times when we asked for directions. Service was really lacking and I hope management can improve on the service of their front desk. It's a pity because the hotel has great potential.

The minute my family and I (6pax) went into this small hotel lobby we were rather impressed by the old-fashioned decor and the courteous, friendly welcome. English speaking is not a problem at all.
The bedroom, a romantic, comfortable and reasonable size was filled with aroma from the burning candles, Even the toiletries in the bathroom was of a certain Italian 'BRAND'. They were clean and well maintained. My son, 5ft 11 ins had no problem with the height of the shower.
The location was most convenient, 2 minutes walk to Xintiandi. Also, it was within walking distance to the MRT, Yu Yuan and the busy Huai Hai Lu. Getting a taxi was easy at all times of the day.
This hotel must be one of the most memorable I had ever experienced. My family was so impressed that they would like to be back in our next visit.

I stayed here late October, right before the China Import Expo in Shanghai which has certainly pushed prices up. Considering the higher price:

- There was no elevators. The hotel was converted from a row of old Shanghai buildings of 2-3 floors and was not retrofitted with elevators. Partly due to the old building nature of the hotel, the room was cool and comfortable, which was very helpful as the air conditioning was not functioning properly.
- Cleanliness was not the best, with slight sticky patch on floor on check in. On the second day the floor was clean.
- IPTV and wifi was not working initially, but was sorted with a router restart.
- Bed was very hard and pillows very flat and worn.
- Shower was temperamental. Hot water tap was very sensitive and goes from cold to very hot with a slight turn. Water pressure was weak.
- Interestingly, the in-room bar was complementary, including San Pallagrino sparkling water.

A rather disappointing stay. At the normal ~800 RMB per night rate this might have been decent enough, but at the elevated ~1200 RMB rate, it just wasn't good enough.

Booked a suite for 2 nights.
Arrived at hotel at 14h, room was not ready so had to wait 1h.
Breakfast room is very small and choice of breakfast is very limited.
After the waitress asked me if I wanted type A or type B breakfast I waited for half hour and still got nothing but a coffee.
So I just left, packed my bags and went to check out.
Original idea was to stay 2 nights in this hotel.
Girl at reception told me computer is broken so I should pay cash, because I already used my vredit card for the warranty I told her I only wanted to use my credit card.
she started to send text messages and finally she managed to call someone to help her.
Check out took half hour.
I travel all the time for business and I don't need 5 star hotel, but if I pay 165 Euro for a room I expect also to get serious service.

Stayed for work - great central location but rooms just feel as if they need a good clean - carpet looked tired and at places dirty needed a good vacuum round the edges , actually replacing it would be good - bed good and ok comfortable . Good Italian restaurant downstairs . Just needs a good spruce over . Felt, looked and and smelt like it needed a good make over -light in rooms really dim - would look for a deal at a better hotel and maybe spend a little more and get fresher and newer

This is best described as a boutique hotel. This is my third stay with them, out of many, many Shanghai trips. Often we use one of the international 5 star brands, but when I want a break from all that sterile stuff, I choose a place like this. Rooms are good size, clean, comfortable and interesting. The wi-fi is free and reliable. There's a good small restaurant downstairs and a wine bar too - some interesting Spanish wines.

You need to prefer character over uniformity, and recognise the difference; and be OK with that. Try the hotel, I think you'll be surprised. Staff are excellent, and while their English is not perfect, it pretty good. More than sufficient to make check in/out easy.

The hotel is just 4 minutes walk from Xintiandi so it's in a very central and convenient location. Rooms are clean though some of the facilities inside are kind of old. Surprisingly the amenities available in the room are of very good quality - when I stayed they were offering Appelles products. Beware if you have big luggages as there are no elevators in the hotel and you would also have to drag your luggage to the streets if you need to get a taxi. Breakfast is not something I would recommend though, and the service at the cafe was quite terrible.

On my travels to China, I stayed a few days in Shanghai. I booked online this small hotel as I wanted to experience a more authentic stay , rather than a big international hotel chain . Plus this hotel was very centrally located just next to the xintiandi area which is very nice and full of restaurants and bars ( maybe a bit too expat though , but very nicely done ).
The hotel is quite luxurious , even though small. the rooms are in classic romantic style with a bit of a mix between oriental and western . The room was very peaceful and the street where the hotel is located does not have much traffic . The staff was very helpful and could speak english. The hotel also has a fitness center , which was excellent as I do like to work out a bit at least even when I'm travelling.
There are a lot of food options all around the hotel . Their own restaurant is Japanese , but unfortunately did not try it . It will be for a next time . I wish there would be more hotels like this one .

We stayed here for 2 days as we were here for a friend's wedding. Superb location - you can't really beat that for the cost which amounted to about USD 190 for 2 nights. However I found the rooms very very dark. So for ladies out there who needs to dress up/do makeup for a special event while in SH, the poor lighting would give you some problems. I would probably check out similar boutique hotels in the area next time I am in SH.
