Have used this hotel a few times over the years. I’ve also recommended it a few times. Always good service. The building is set in lovely grounds in the middle of a bustling neighborhood. Great location. Service is good. Will keep returning in the future.

I used to be a fan of the InterContinental brand – it has such a set of persistently high-quality properties across China that, I always said, could hardly be a source of disappointment. However, the more travelling experience I have, the less passionate I am with InterContinental. For sure, InterContinental hotels still rarely disappoint, but equally rare is the occasion when they elicit excitement – the persistence in quality seems to come with the price of overly rigid standardization, which brings in boringness. Gradually, InterContinental becomes in my mind a synonym of standardized business hotel, which I would avoid if the purpose of my stay is to explore a great hotel. Nonetheless, I have long heard that InterContinental Ruijin is different. Many, even some textbooks about hotels, boost this InterContinental hotel for being an exceptional place to walk back into those begone romantic days of Shanghai in its semi-colonial time. Therefore, I paid a visit to this hotel when I was still in Shanghai. Conclusion first: it is indeed not a conventional InterContinental hotel. Also, its exterior architecture, landscaping, and room indeed possess the magic power of bringing every of its guests back to the old time. However, overall, I would need to think twice before recommending this hotel to any of my friends. InterContinental Ruijin has a truly unrivallable public area. In fact, I am not even sure if I should describe it as a public area. Unlike most of the hotels in Shanghai, InterContinental Ruijin is not hotel located inside one single building. Instead, it is composed of quite a number of classical-style mansions scattered around a vast British-style garden, covered by extensive lawns and canopies and dizzyingly cut through by some little creeks. It is situated at the heart of the bustling old section of Shanghai which is full of grassroot lives, but the man-tall wall seems to have some sorts of magic power that it creates a completely different environment inside. Driving into this hotel is an astonishing experience: one second before we are still in the restless Shanghai with everything and everyone flying all around; the next second we are in a garden that one can hardly imagine would exist in the very heart of this metropolis, with its golden leaves softening the tiles, the little birds cheerfully playing on the lawns, the heart-refreshing song from the creeks. All with so few people. It is a British-style garden, but it seems that not many gardens in England can rival the refreshing while refined air here. It must be the most breathtaking entrance experience in Shanghai, if not in the entire China. I could not resist the temptation to wander through the garden later on – it took me 30 minutes just to walk every part through. These 30 minutes are among the most memorable time I had in Shanghai: listening to the fall breeze of Shanghai while fascinated by the red-brick classical mansions spotted across this maze-like green land, the sweet and Shanghai-ly refined way of life that those fictions about 1930s Shanghai describe seem to have all come into life. I would not say the rooms here are equally fascinating. In fact, if being singled out to appreciate alone – out of the context such a gorgeous landscaping – I am not confident if I can refrain from describing the rooms at InterContinental Ruiji as being too old-fashioned. Its rooms lavishly utilized red-wood furniture – from the bed, to the desk, to the wardrobe, even the wooden floor! – everything is red wood. If something does not carry a red wooden color, it must be colored by wine red or golden yellow. In the other word, InterContinental Ruiji is not shy from adopting the colors fashioned by most of the first-generation hotels opened after China’s economic open-up, a style that is old but not old enough to show the beauty of time; a style that, I believe, most people these days would find too heavy, dim, and not too comfy. However (a big however here), it is different here at InterContinental Ruiji. The rooms really need to thank the garden at this point: being completely surrounded by and attached to the beautiful garden, such room design not only escape the above-described outdated and pressuring vibe; it makes the room truly (and lovingly), really, “old Shanghai”. Walking up from the apparently endless garden, one would find such a heavy room truly – securing. With the trees still swinging and breeze still lightly flowing outside the balcony, everything inside the room seems so warm and sweet, which is made even more so by the old-school furniture (not only in terms of color but also style). It is like walking from a heavily snowing Central Park during winter into a heavily enclosed, cozy mansion with a tall Christmas tree right to next to a crackling fireplace. Sitting inside this room which fuses old-school urban Chinese style with classical style, overlooking at the vast garden which can turn so cold and seem a bit too out of touch by human at night, I doubt if there is any style more reassuring and sweeter than the rooms in InterContinental Ruiji. Given how peerless the architecture, the garden, and the room are, why would I still need to think twice before recommending this hotel? It is because of the service. While the hardware of InterContinental Ruiji is amazing to the extent that it is hardly like a conventional InterContinental hotel, equally unrecognizable is the service. The check-in process was, to be fair, fast and efficient. However, it seemed that the hotel had failed to make use of these three golden minutes to leave a good impression to its guests. The front desk seemed to be rushing all the time and kept the conversation to the bare minimal. From the perspective of a guest, all I could see was that it was an efficient team, but not a group of great hotel people who would welcome their guests in any manner passionate, warm, or friendly. This InterContinental hotel is obviously not a business hotel and many guests come for holiday or staycation, so why refraining from showing a bit of temperature? Additionally, I understand it could be the result of staff shortage, but InterContinental Ruiji seems to have really wasted their amazing hardware. There was no information provided about the garden, which is full of stories and history; not even a map guiding guests how to walk it through! It is not anything fatal but is quite a shock for a hotel enjoying such a wonderful setting. It is such a waste to the hotel’s asset. Peace Hotel, which is not far away, on the contrary, seems to be doing a really good job on this aspect and manages to tell a lot of stories about their architecture, thus add to the stay a truly rewarding touristic element (which not many hotels in China have the condition to do so! So I believe it would make a hotel sharply stand out if it has the condition to do so and knows how to do so). However, I believe the abovementioned problems are actually acceptable – ultimately the hotel has done their job; they just did not go one step further to make its guests feel truly welcomed. However, what I experienced during the rest of my stay was indeed a bit out of my expectation. A few examples here. When I was on a golf cart to move from the check-in building to my building, I asked the bell-team gentleman riding the cart if there was anything map or leaflet about the garden so that I could walk around the hotel more informedly later. Guess how he replied? “Maybe the reception has it,” he said, in a tone that cannot be colder. It was as if I was randomly catching a stranger outside and asked her something. Then, that gentleman escorted me to my room, which I really appreciated. However, to my surprise, he seemed completely unaware of the very basic etiquette to let others leave the elevator first. When the elevator door opened, he just walked straight out of the elevator, without even glimpsing at anyone inside. In fact, he did not even press the open button. His whole movement was so natural that I doubted if he knew he needed to hold the door at all. Finally, he came into my room, dropped the suitcase, then said nothing and left. Is it the end? Unfortunately, not yet. After entering the room, I realized there were some problems with the room. I immediately called the front desk about that. “We have already upgraded you,” she replied. Alright, but that was not the problem; the problem was that the room was broken. I told her once again about the problems. “We have already upgraded you,” she gave me back the same answer. I am still extremely puzzled by the logics behind her answer: I am grateful for the upgrade, but does it solve the problems inside the room? It is like I told a restaurant that my dish is rotten but the restaurant simply answered “we have given you a free meat ball in that dish already” then did nothing. These problems are not anymore about whether the staff was hospitable. It is about whether they were doing their jobs or not. For me, they were not – not one person failing, but apparently quite a large portion of the team was failing. InterContinental Ruiji has a set of hardware that I doubt if there is one hotel in Shanghai that would not be jealous of. If staffed by first-class people, no one should be surprised that InterContinental Ruiji would come very close to getting the crown of Shanghai’s hotel industry, if not actually getting the crown. It is my sincere wish that such a lovely hotel can shine to its fullest extent in the soon future.

Very good hardware but software can be even better Stayed there for 3 nights over my recent business trip to Shanghai. Overall it was a very impressive property which has a sense of colonial feel. Upon check-in , as a RA member the staff kindly upgraded me in to the suite which is located in their main building. However I was not told any other RA benefits i.e. mini bar and etc and it seems there is a lack of recognition of RA status which may be down to fact that the staff were all very busy on that day . Staff generally speaking were very friendly and attentive The room was very spacious and well organised . I had very good sleep over those 3 nights which is the most important thing in the trip. Their gym seems being operated by the 3rd party but it was a very functional gym which I thoroughly enjoyed over my stay. I really like their club lounge which is the highlight of this property however I also need to complain about what happen. Maybe for some odd reasons I am not aware of , the lounge staff allow the guests to enter the lounge with slipper and some guest was even wearing pajamas which is shocking to me. I told the lounge staff this is absolutely unacceptable and it should not happen in the property like Intercontinental. Staff did speak to the guest and asked them to change the cloths . Then next day, the same guest was entering the lounge with the slipper again and I just give it up, Hence I think that this hotel has a real potential to become into a top notch hotel but the staff need more training.

Such a fantastic hotel. Its beautiful grounds and buildings are just the heritage on site. Staff learned it’s my daughter’s birthday stay and prepared cake and card, which made our stay so unforgettable! We loved staying in the club room and enjoyed the club lounge so much. Staff were friendly and nice to my family.

Absolutely beautiful hotel but extremely, extremely disappointed with service that barred foreigners from going up to visit (NOT stay) in a room without a passport, despite having a scan of the document with all relevant information on there. The reasoning given was “it’s government policy, especially for foreigners during this epidemic period”. A hazy indication was given that it was a rule of the public security bureau 公安局, which is not true (read the law). No attempt was made to sincerely apologise for refusing me entry, no attempt was made to find a solution. Ended with me walking out. I expect this behaviour from smaller Chinese hotels but from the bigger international ones in Shanghai (!) with such a good reputation and such a hefty price tag, I was shocked at how unwelcome I was made to feel. Will not be recommending to friends and will not be coming back. Left a nasty taste in my mouth.

Dear 821ellieb, Greetings from InterContinental Shanghai Ruijin! Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience at our hotel on TripAdvisor. Firstly and most importantly, please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience you experienced. I can confirm that we have been advised to ask for valid identification from every person who wishes to visit a hotel guest room in the hotel. For local Chinese guests this is their identification card and for foreign guests (such as myself) we must use a passport. Whilst I understand your frustration on this ruling, I can assure you that this is applied to each and every guest who seeks assistance to a guest room at any of our Reception or Concierge desks. I must apologise if this message was not correctly communicated by our team or came across as being only for certain guests, it is for all of our guests. Normally when this type of request is made we suggest that the in-house guest either meets his visitors in the hotel lobby or restaurant. Again I apologise if this was not offered and I have taken this up with our Front Office Manager to ensure further training and guidance is given. Thank you again for bringing this to our attention so we can ensure clearer communication is provided to our guests and visitors in the future. I would again like to confirm that we value the patronage of every guest and do not have different rules for different people. My apologies and should you need any assistance in the future please do not hesitate to reach out to me. We hope we will have an opportunity to demonstrate this was a genuine communication mistake and welcome you back. Best regards Kim Powley Managing Director InterContinental Shanghai Ruijin

If I hadn’t seen Intercontinental sign everywhere, I definitely would think I was in a local hotel with deep history. The downtown resort has the biggest and most beautiful garden in the center of Shanghai, including a 600 hundred years old water well(picture 2). Architecture is very impressive. As an ambassador member, I got an executive room as upgrade benefit. But if you looked at the ceiling lamp in the toilet, the dust had been there for a decade probably (photo 3). Breakfast selection was great but not the dinner menu. Service was still below my expectation for an Intercontinental. Lady at the front desk of the gym paid more attention to her cell phone than me standing in front of the desk. Greetings from staff made you feel strange. Finally, I must make negative comment about this ambassadorship. You will never find room available in the hotel if you want to use your free night coming with the membership. Even during the pandemic, IHG only extended it by 6 month only. IN SUMMARY, this is a nice hotel to stay if you are familiar with local style of service.

The hotel grounds are beautiful and the building is old and full of history, the lobby magnificent. We stopped by, just to have a drink at the lobby bar where the pianist was playing, and everything was telling us we will spend a good time there. We ordered basic cocktails, but were surprised to hear there was no ingredients to make our cocktails(no gin and tonic, no bloody Mary, no blueberry martini), the cocktail is at 88rmb and is served without peanuts, without napkins. For a high class hotel this is not acceptable. The cherry on the top was that we were charged 1 vodka 88rmb and 1 tonic 55rmb so 140 rmb for a vodka tonic, although it was not our first choice. Finally, at the lobby bar of an international brand, there is no way to pay with an international credit card...just bad.

My wife and I have returned to the Intercontinental Shanghai Ruijin for another weekend get away from across the river. I booked the a stay at the Club Intercontinental which has just recently been reopened. The club rooms are beautiful, clean and well maintained. The Club building is separate from the main hotel. For us, its exclusivity and service is what attracts us to stay here. While the club lounge is still closed, the amenities have been modified to accommodate the guest. They still have the happy hour, it's just that it is being served in the La Rue restaurant in the main building. Instead of the standard appetizers, this has been replaced by a set menu. Now I wasn't sure how this would be- but it turned out to be excellent. The chef has prepared a variety of dishes for the set menu and my wife and I felt that the choices were good and the food was excellent. Our server, May Zhang paid special attention to us and served us both nights- always helpful and has a great memory. She went well beyond standard service by getting us extra xiao long bao - a Shanghainese standard. Kim Powley, managing director, greeted us and went out of his way to accommodate a request that he surely didn't have to - thank you Kim. On the food and beverage side, the hard workers, Pascal Zhang and Cai, were also attentive during our breakfast time. The buffet has many selections and no one should come away disappointed. Well done La Rue restaurant. We hope to see you again in the near future.
