I had an overall satisfactory stay at the Holiday Inn Shanghai Pudong. The hotel, owned by China National Coal Group, had a special welcome desk for those affiliated with the Group's Communist Party branch. I usually receive courteous greetings at the front door, although my check-in experience was mixed. While the receptionist helping me did all she could, her colleague, who was supposedly a supervisor, tried to bypass her and even had a quarrel with her in front of me, which was utterly unprofessional. The manager apologized to me afterward when I brought up the issue with her.

The Executive Club lounge was closed during my visit, but the hotel offered those with lounge membership the lounge offerings at the restaurant downstairs, so there was no problem. The afternoon tea can be either enjoyed on premises or taken to go. Breakfast and happy hour spreads are adequate. The staff at the restaurant were very helpful, but I also caught sight of a staff member laughing at the behaviour of another guest leaving the restaurant, which I thought was very inappropriate.

The room had a large desk suitable for work. The view was okay, and the bed was comfortable. On the other hand, the bathroom was too small. The sink was too low for me to use comfortably, the water pressure was very low, and the shower knobs were difficult to operate. While I appreciate the Japanese toilet, it did not flush well.

The check-out experience was very nice. I mistakenly left my phone at the front desk, and the receptionist quickly delivered it to the front door as I was leaving the hotel, which I was very grateful for. They also helped arrange taxis for me a few times.

It’s a very old hotel, so room is quite big. location is also near to a metro, small park and eateries. the bed is comfy, while they need to improve more on cleanliness overall.
the lift is quite slow during morning breakfast rush… breakfast selection was wonderful!

After four or five stays, I continue to label this hotel as the world's best Holiday Inn, as I did almost three years ago.

Really, the Holiday Inn Pudong is better than some of the IHG's more upscale Intercontinental Hotels. Yes, it is that good. Definitely it is better than every Crowne Plaza hotel I have stayed in.

First comes employee training. Customer service can be spotty in western-chain hotels in Shanghai, but at the HIP the staff is readily conversant in English, or nearly so. The dining room suffers a bit, but more about that later. Personnel are simply well trained, no doubt about it. If you had stayed in the the dozens of China hotels as I have, you would understand why the HIP ranks near the top of all China hotels I have frequented. Customer service comes #1, not as an afterthought, or after a complaint.

Secondly, the facility itself is superior to any other HI I have seen on four continents. Remodeled three years ago, HIP is not showing wear and tear. Maintenance is superb. Carpets are spotless. (See my TA China Forum Top Question about "What should I expect at Chinese hotels" for comparison.) The rooms feature oversized bathtub/shower combinations. There is the clear glass-enclosed bathroom, with Venetian blinds provided between glass panes for privacy. This creates a much lighter, brighter and more open bathroom. Nice. The amenities are generous. Towels big and fluffy. I guess luxury hotel stayers could pay more than twice the HIP price for the additional heated towel amenity.

Third, the location is just great, with two Metro stops within one or two very short blocks, Pudian Road on Line 6 and Pudian Road on Line 4. Interchanging from these two stops will get you anywhere in Shanghai. Weather wet and/or cold? Avoid the downtown traffic gridlock and shortage of taxis and take the Shanghai Metro, the world's largest and newest major subway system.

Eat locally at one of the many middle-class Chinese restaurants, such as HeiJi on the same block, or others within a five minute taxi ride. This area of Pudong is close to many cuisines on Weifang and E Shan Lu. Don't get talked into tourist traps when you can eat with local families at nearby white-linen restaurants which have English menus.

Luxury and electronic shopping is a short walk away to Zhangyang Road. A couple of electronic malls let you comparison shop at reputable places. The fake markets have the "f" word for a reason, so avoid them for anything of much value. For those who cannot resist the opportunity, the Science & Technology Museum Metro Stop Market, the city's largest, is just two stops away, transferring at Century Blvd. Enough stores there to keep a bargain shopper busy for a half day or more.

Where is there room for improvement at HIP? First and foremost, the hotel needs WiFi in the hotel rooms, the international standard now for iPhone, iPad and eBook users. When a foreigner visits, the easy way to avoid excessive data charges on electronic devices is to find good and fast WiFi in the room. The hotel has so-so WiFi in the lobby, frankly a pain to use when necessary. I know the hotel wants its USD$10+ per day for in-room wired internet, but times and technology have changed.

Secondly, the first floor restaurant is not much more than a coffee shop with the same prices as the far better nearby restaurants. Definitely recommended is the breakfast-included rate option as it is a great spread, and big eaters can avoid anything more than a snack for lunch. While the breakfast cannot compete with the award-winning breakfast buffet at the nearby Intercontinental Pudong Hotel, the HIP's breakfast still is an excellent job overall.

A word of caution to first timers--there are several Holiday Inns in Pudong, and this review applies to the one on Dong Fang Road. The others have different official names, but still confusion is easy, such as the "XYZ Holiday Inn in Pudong."

Reviewer pictures are not really necessary as you cannot tell the difference from the hotel's own professional photos. It is that well maintained.

As a tourist, I have spent well over 12 months in China hotels over the past six years. Simply put, it continues to be an absolute pleasure to stay at the Holiday Inn Pudong, Shanghai.

I've stayed at this hotel twice, the hotel is great, the staff friendly and they all speak English. However the reason why I'm writing this review is to warn people about the spa (Asani spa, next to the fitness centre, which is not managed by the hotel).

I go to a lot of spas to get a massage on a regular basis, and It is an absolute rip-off. First of all the staff are untrained and it is totally overpriced.

I paid 1200 CNY (about £120 at the time!) for an hour's massage, as half way through the masseuse asked if I wanted a longer massage and went on to explain the "T&Cs", in the middle of the massage. So not only overpriced, but also unprofessional. Not realising the exchange rate, I agreed to another half an hour for 400 CNY more, however upon returning to my hotel room realised the massage had not been half an hour more. Either way, the massage was below average (I actually ended up with a sore neck afterwards) and it was overpriced, and the staff acted in an unprofessional manner. Not to mention the 15% mandatory service charge. I left with the feeling that they were only after my money not after providing me with the service.

Anyway, as it is not managed by the hotel (I believe it's called Asani spa or something) and it's located next to the fitness centre, they don't take any responsbility for it, so I tried to complain to the Holiday Inn but to no avail.

There is another massage place across the road from the hotel, so if you are in the need of a massage after a long trip, I suggest you think long and hard before going to this establishment for it!!

I Booked a 4 night stay on room-only basis, the hotel is in the Century Road area. Check-in was straight forward, all the amenities and hotel features were pointed out to me. I was given an upgrade to an Executive Room with Lounge Access.

The room was on the 16th floor and was extremely spacious and luxuriously appointed with tea and coffee facilities, large plasma TV with around 40 channels, mini bar, complimentary bottled water. There was a glass working desk and small sitting area, also a laptop safe hidden by a sliding door. The bathroom was large with a huge square bath however it is more quirky than anything and a way a saving space.

I took breakfast in the main restaurant, I ate early and there was a wide selection of hot/cold food with distinct serving areas. The restaurant filled very quickly but the food was soon replenished.

As I had lounge access, I made use of it on several occasions. I was always warmly welcomed by the staff. Breakfast is served from 7am onwards and there is a good selection of hot and cold food, not quite as extensive range as the main restaurant but a good alternative. In the evening alcoholic drinks are served by staff and are swiftly topped up without prompting, also a large selection of snacks was available but as soon as these were taken they were not replaced. Soft drinks and tea/coffee served throughout the day with fruit/biscuits available. From the Smoking Area there is a great view of surrounding area.

The metro station Pudian Road on Line 4 (Inner/Outer Circle Line) is a five minute walk from the hotel and serves Shanghai Railway Station. By changing at Century Road an ideal connection for Lujiazui (Oriental Pearl Tower) and Longyang Road (Maglev for Pudong International Airport))

An excellent hotel in a convenient part of Pudong, and efficiently run. I would happily return.

Good points-
hotel is much better than average Holiday Inn - has a swank feel about atrium and decor in public areas.
friendly staff
good size room with stylish decor
excellent business lounge
indoor swimming pool but heavily chlorinated and in need of some tlc or revamp

bad points -
hotel appears to tolerate a couple of spivs offering sex with local ladies who hang around on pavement right outside hotel so expect to be asked if you want massage with happy ending with good time ladies everytime you leave the hotel. 2 individuals in particular wre there every day for 3 weeks.

Irish bar is very empty apart from a smattering of local ladies.

I stayed in this hotel for 6 nights for a business trip. On arrival check-in was fast and efficient. I had travelled to China on an overnight flight, and arrived at the hotel at around 9am in the morning. I was able to check straight-in, and was only charged a ‘half day’ for the early check-in, and was still offered the inclusive breakfast.

The room was of a reasonable size on the 27th floor, and very quiet. Bathroom was also of a reasonable size, with a square ‘two person’ size tub and overhead shower.

The ‘flat screen’ TV had a good selection of channels, including CNN News channel and BBC World News.

Internet is via cable, and charged at 1 RMB/min (up to a maximum charge of 80 RMB in a 24 hour period).

Within the room, the power sockets are configured so that they conveniently take British, European and US plugs.

Breakfast is served on the ground floor via a buffet, and offers a 50:50 split between western and Chinese cuisines. Overall the selection was good, and the service received was fast and efficient. There is also a chef on both cuisine sides to cater for individual requests.

The hotel has few in house restaurants/bars. Flannagan’s, an Irish bar on the ground floor seems to be popular with single business travellers, and they have a regular live band. Also on the ground floor, where breakfast is served, is another restaurant. However there is no noticeable difference between this restaurant, Flannagan’s and room service in terms of menu options. I did try a Japanese restaurant on the second floor, which I believe offers a sort of Japanese/fusion experience. So you can order usual Japanese sushi favourites, along with western dishes all shaped in small portions (e.g. potatoes/cheese croquets and egg omelette pieces etc).

Location wise the hotel is situated on one of the main roads through the Pudong district, and is a good location if you want to be in the area. However, if you need to be in the financial centre, or the main shopping areas, I would choose a hotel closer to that area (although a taxi journey to and from those districts costs only £2-3) but could take a while if you’re travelling in rush-hour and need to use the tunnel connecting both sides of the river.

Overall I was very satisfied with the stay at the hotel. If you want to go “higher-end” then there is a St Regis situated right next door to the Holiday Inn which could be worth considering.

From the warmth of the smiles, and the treatment as a special guest of this hotel, the Holiday Inn Pudong stay was darned near perfect. The lobby radiated happy employees. They are well trained and enjoy their jobs. You can tell after just a few moments. So before you even wonder if there is an Priority Club (PC) upgrade or what the room looks like, you feel special.

The upgrade was provided. The "Customer Experience Manager" was behind the PC check-in desk and said the management was very happy I decided on their Holiday Inn. He said they were proud of their new rooms and he personally escorted us to the room with the bellman and the bags. (I said to myself, maybe they know I write these reviews, but then after seeing all the recent top five-bullet ratings for this hotel, I realized they just treat their guests right!)

The room was superior in the truest sense. A corner room, it was not huge, but comfortable, light and very modern with a huge bath area and tub for two. The staff people remembered my name, albeit in a Chinese way, calling me Mr. Robert throughout my stay. Not just one, but a handful of employees memorize your name or do a really fast check on the computer to make sure they address you personally. Again, they are trained to make you feel special. As a Trip Advisor Destination Expert, I have been in many Shanghai hotels, and this one went all out in customer service.

The location in Pudong is a neutral factor in my opinion. You are a short two block walk to subway Line 4, just one stop from Line 2 (downtown and Maglev station to Pudong airport). If you enjoy some good exercise, it is an interesting five to ten minute walk to Century Blvd (Line 2 station), and then down to the Oriental Pearl Tower, Jin Mao and World Financial Center buildings, or up to Century Park. There are plenty of taxis at the front door, something you should not take for granted in busy Shanghai.

You are not on the Bund, but then again you are not harassed constantly by touts staked out at every tourist hotel. The Pudong area is modern Shanghai, as safe as can be. Upscale shopping is nearby as well as fashion market shopping at the Technology Museum subway stop.

Contrary to another reviewer's comments, there are several nice Chinese "white linen" restaurants within a block. Heji is practically next door, not a storefront but on the 6th floor, and is crowded with locals eating copious amounts of great typical Shanghainese food. Whoops, back to the hotel review...

The breakfasts were very good in quality. The hotel's lunch and dinner menus looked very affordable for such a high quality hotel. I will try the in-hotel restaurant next time. The hotel had the fastest internet I have seen in my 12 visits (and maybe 50 hotel stays) in China in the past three years. Lightning fast, just like my DSL at home. It costs 80 yuan, not a bargain but cheaper than some upscale hotels in Shanghai.

Which brings me back to the overall quality of the Holiday Inn Pudong. The staff and accommodations will leave no doubt in your mind. You will wish every hotel, not just a Holiday Inn, could reach this outstanding quality.

I paid average 150 USD per room night for single occupancy without any breakfast. I am a Priority Club Member and didn't get any preference. I wanted a half page B&W printout, they charged me even for that. The hotel is about 30 minutes drive from Pudong International Airport and 3 minutes walk from the Pudong Road Metro station. I booked a TAXI from Hotel Concierge for AIRPORT Drop and the TAXI charged me 206 Yuan. My local friend told me that it shouldn't cost anything more than 100 YUAN. The Hotel Lobby has FOREX machine where you can convert USD to YUAN/RBM (local currency). I requested the front-desk hotel staff to help me with the Forex, she was very reluctant to do so.
