I have been a passionate advocate for Broadway Mansions, staying two or three times a year for a few years now. I have arranged friends to stay there, recommended it online, and even arranged for meetings and groups to use it too.

However that is unlikely to continue. Over the past few stays the cleanliness has been declining and worse the staff have been getting much much worse. On my latest trip on our first night my wife got electrocuted in the bathroom. Fortunately it was more shock than burn, but the response was terrible. The technician walked in touched the light (which was now off) and said it was fine. The Asst Manager promised to move us and even though this was raised each day we never were and so used the bathroom less than we would have liked.

At checking in it had also been a mission where the person serving simply kept ignoring my questions over our booking and the room requests to assign us the room we wanted. He just talked over the top of me and refused to read our booking acknowledgement.

Another example of declining standards was whenever I walked through the entrance on my own. I would be propositioned by young women asking if I wanted company. And given the vocal activity from our neighbouring room, I did wonder if the hotel had set aside a roon for this purpose.

Probably worse though was for the first time ever my bags were searched in my room and money was stolen. All our main valuables were secured but I still had around NZ$50 in loose assorted Hong Kong and New Zealand dollars in a pocket of my laptop bag. Sadly this was taken on our last day. It was obvious the bag had been gone through but again raising this with staff got no response whatsoever. They did not even come to our room to discuss it. I have since written to the hotel to give this information, leaving both my email and phone numbers, but no one even replies to these either. Very poor service and I do wonder if there is new management given the changes in service standards and reduction of facilities.

This is a great building in a fantastic location, but it is being let down by the people who work there. I have always given the highest ratings to Broadway Mansions, but sadly this is no longer the case.

If you are looking for Western service and amenities, this may not be the place, but if you are looking for a great location, great view, and a bit of old-world Shanghai, this is a great value. Accomodations more than adequate - spacious, high-ceilinged room (riverside - recommended for view; a bit noisy, but hey - it's Shanghai!) with everything needed for a comfortable stay. Restaurants a bit boring, but so much within walking distance it is irrelevant. I loved that I could fling open the windows and overlook the Bund, the river and Pudong across! Very colorful!!

This is one of the old shanghai hotels with a lot of history and a lot of character. The staff were very pleasant and helpful in everyway possible. The location was also excellent, with some stunning views of the Pudong and the Bund. I stayed here twice, and on both occasions I was able to persuade the staff to upgrade me to a suite. The suites were very nice, spacious and well furnished. Ok ok, maybe I have the luck of the Irish with an irish passport but I got it twice so I would recommend others to try. All in all a very good standard hotel with a lot of character and charm.

The Broadway Mansions is not as it appears. Outwardly it looks high class and very nice; however behind the scenes it has several issues. The common areas are are well presented; however the bedrooms are a dissapointment. They are old fashioned, poorly lit with major electrical issues. Behind units plugs were hanging off walls exposing bare wires, the electrics tripped at least 2 or 3 times a day, and there were iron burn marks on the carpets of both the rooms we had. Despite advertsing amazing views we had none, looking into parking areas or high walls, and the Shanghai blog sites stated that they had NYE celebrations for western guests. This was not true, and there was a distinct lack of said western guests, even in the British Pub onsite; which was only british in name. The hotel is in an excellent location which is its only redeeming point.

Having stayed in more than 50 hotels in the past 18 months I would have to say that this is the least welcome I have ever felt. I went to the desk and spoke to the girl who had a badge that said I can speak english. Nice touch I thought! I had a friend with me who was Chinese but she knew nothing about my booking or what requests or arrangements I had made prior. I was immediately told that there was a big problem with my booking because I had two bookings. That was actually correct as I use wotif.com and originally booked for two nights and then booked another two nights so two different booking confirmations. Not a big problem from my point of view. Suddenly the staff member starts talking in Mandarin to my friend who doesn't know anything about my booking so I ask if she would't mind talking to me. She ignored me and so I asked again. 4 times I had to ask her to stop as it appeared that all these arrangements were being made without my consent or knowledge.

I had requested a non-smoking room on a floor as high as possible. When the mess with two booking was eventually sorted out they had given me a smoking floor that was the first floor of rooms. When I questioned this I was told that they never ever look at the requests so why did I bother. Hmmm I ask the same question.

OK we could forgive one bad experience from one staff member so let's not let that cloud our judgement here. Bu oh no - when I got to the room it was like going back in time but not in a good way. The room was dark, smelly, and poorly equipped. When I got a shower it didn't work properly, the water was luke warm (it was minus 3 outside so a hot shower would have been nice. Then the shower head fell off.

Breakfast was horrendously expensive and when we arrived at 9.50am I asked if we still had time for breakfast and were assured that we had plenty of time. So at 9.58am the staff begin packing up and by 10.10 am we were ushered out the door. None of the staff in the restaurant spoke any english so couldn't express that we felt we needed more time.

Attitude of staff. My girlfriend of some 12 months lives in Shanghai and works as a Doctor. She is Chinese. She joined me on the second night and from that moment the staff treated me with total disrespect and treated her like a prostitute. I have never experienced such poor treatment in a hotel and cannot begin to express how upset we were.

As I said earlier, I stay in a lot of hotels, I am not arrogant, boorish, rude, disrespectful. I treat people well and am quietly spoken. It has taken a lot for me to write this review but I was totally disgusted with the way that we were treated in this hotel. I loved Shanghai and its people but not this particular hotel.

The good: pretty good location and nice breakfast buffet (American or Chinese). The doormen are great (can hail you a taxi) and will confirm with driver your destination. The front desk has cards that state in English and Chinese "Take me to __" and they will fill in the Chinese for you. Everyone seemed to speak very good English. The hotel has English HBO and Cinimax. Room was very large with teriffic and newly remodeled shower/bathroom. But beware, every room was somewhat different when we compared them to others. Had post office and business center in hotel, as well as very pushy sales staff in attached gift shop.

The bad: the ROCK HARD BEDS!!! The floor was softer than these beds. I have never slept on a brick bed before staying here. The others in our tour group all had the same complaint. Because I primarily use the hotel room for sleeping, I had to rate this hotel only 3 stars, even though it was great that they all spoke English and were very helpful.

Although they had fast Internet, they charged $20 US a day or $1 a minute to use, which I thought was high.

The food store in hotel was extremely high ($3.00 for a Coke that you could buy for .50 on street) but I guess that is to be expected at hotel.

Bottom line, if part of an included tour group, not so bad. But if paying on own or going on business, the beds are just too hard and you could stay at better for the same price.

Stayed there for 4 nights. The new decorated deluxe room was furbished and decorated in the best of taste. Small but very clean. Don't know if the standard rooms are as nice. the staff was very friendly and helpful. Very favourable price compared to good standard and fantastic location of hotel. The building is old, but in very good condition and everything is clean. The buffet breakfast is not very good (poor choice and expensive), better take your breakfast à la carte at the coffee shop (opened 24 h). Would choose this hotel again!

I recently went on the "Taste of China" trip with Friendly Planet. Broadway Mansions was the first hotel we stayed at in China. We walked into the hotel and there was a foul smell. When I asked the clerk at the desk they commented it was an old hotel. We went to our room and I almost fainted. The rugs were filthy with dirt foot prints. The bathtub stopped up and they came to fix it. After that the toilet stopped up and we could do nothing about it. When I ask to change rooms I was told I would have to wait until tomorrow. After changing rooms we walked into another filthy room with footprints but this one had the same foul order. We were told no other rooms were available and to open our windows. We found out the smell was sewage. An employee from Friendly Planet was on our tour and took pictures to take back to the agency. I received an e-mail making all kinds of excuses and saying this was a top hotel with high marks. The usual excuses and not wanting to take responsibility. They offered me a $100.00 off my next trip. They can keep their $100.00.

Generally, happy with our stay at the broadway. Good spacious rooms and a good location.Couple of minor hiccups - the room wasn't made up when we arrived, the internet should be free (80 yuan an hour) at a hotel of this type and the beds could be softer but overall the pros outweighed the cons. The staff were helpful, the rooms were spacious and comfortable and a good base to see Shanghai. Recommend.

Stayed for two nights in a river view room with my partner, arrived early and got straight into room which was great start.Staff efficient but bell boys very friendly and helpful.
The river view was excellent especially at night, would recommend paying the little extra when booking for the view!
Room was spacious, clean and the bathroom was fantastic.
This hotel is right at the top of the bund so you have the lovely walk along it into town every morning. Everywhere is within walking distance(if you are happy to do quite alot of walking) although the metro system is also very cheap and easy to use and the tickets machines are in english.
Nearby to eat is shanghai Grandmother which is cheap and tasty.
One tip would be don't get a private airport taxi on arrival no matter how jet lagged you are , it costs £50 and the driver expects a tip , although you can expect no less than a Buick if you fancy driving into the city in style. It's much easier to get a metered taxi or the Maglev and a metro , which is a great experience.
Shanghai is an amazing city , I would also recommend Shanghai Pathways Tours - we went on the bird, flower and antique tour and got a taste of the real Shanghai with a very knowledgeable and friendly tour guide!
Enjoy

How far is it to the international airport, do you offer a free shuttle service. Can we check in before 2pm
Answer from Glenn B
Granby, Colorado66 contributions13 helpful votes
The international airport is an hour drive from the central city. Third party shuttles are available for a reasonable fee. We reserved the shuttle at the hotel front desk. You can also ride the maglev train most of the way and then catch a taxi to a hotel. I did that once; fun but not certain it saves time or money.
