Located right across the vast green area of People's Square, Concert hall and Yanzhong Square Park, which resembles the Central Park atmosphere in NYC. The hotel building is historic and quite attractive, retaining the classic western-chinese mixture look.

The room was clean, but the shower booth floor had stains all over, which I was already aware by reading other Tripadvisor reviewers' reports.

The breakfast was OK, haven't tried the room service as they close quite early, so I had to walk to nearby convenience stores to buy some noodles. (And if you miss Starbucks, there are two nearby the hotel so rest assured)

This was actually more like "average" but I put above average because the price was right. Clean rooms, no cleanliness problems, laundry prices were very reasonable, minibar prices also very reasonable (6 RMB for a beer, 5 RMB for an OJ). I stayed here for 4 nights. No complaints; the maid service was actually better than that in a "5 star" hotel I stayed in in Beijing, since they filled a pitcher of drinking water for you every night whereas the "5 star" hotel didn't.

I really only have two complaints about this hotel--one may be related to the natural high humidity of Shanghai--the rooms were a bit overhumid (cool, but humid) and once used, our towels wouldn't dry out, even with the bathroom fan on. We were comfortable but I hated having to wait for the damp towels to be replaced every day (I could have asked for replacement earlier I suppose). The second complaint is that when I used the hotel's internet access (which was admittedly cheap), the connection was extremely slow, as in much slower than a 56K modem.

Another thing I liked about this hotel was the very reasonable currency exchange rates. I wrote them down and compared them to a few places we saw walking around Shanghai, and the hotel's were much better. We also ate breakfast in the cafe one morning and it was decent.

It was a real good surprise for a hotel in the heart of shanghai.

It's a quiet hotel located in heart of shanghai.
Close to metro (Line8 : Dashijie metro station). 1 metro station from people square.
But you can walk to go to people's square (between 10 to 20 min walking) or to go to french concession.

Close to local restaurant behind the hotel. Close to shopping area. Near the main shopping street. Near Museum.

Staff is very friendly and efficient. There is always someone to help you for luggages, or to take taxi.

The room was big and very comfortable. We did spend 6 nights there. View on the bund. Level 7 (room 720). Very very very QUIET ROOM with a modern design. So we did sleep very well. WIFI in the room. It was a non smoking floor. in the corridors of the hotel, it smells very good

It's Value for money. Next time we go back to shanghai, we will choose again that hotel. A really good surprise.

The staff is very nice, although they have limited English. Expectations of the level of service, in general (but not always) compared to western standards, must be lowered. Tipping is not a common custom so that removes some motivation. They get paid the same regardless of their level of service. For example, when I approached the desk for a simple question, the clerk was busy with some activity and more or less ignored me for a couple of minutes, while they completed their current task. This happened more than once. However, when they finally acknowledged me, my questions were answered although I felt as if I had interrupted something. Being an elder Chinese (American) male made no difference to them even though we are to be held in high esteem by their culture. The room was comfortable and fairly clean. The location was excellent, within walking distance to the Bund and E. Nanjing Road. There are numerous metro lines that intersect near this hotel. Restaurants abound, however most menus are in Chinese only, and the locals do not speak much English. Bring your own napkins or plan on paying a couple of yuan for them. This is true at many, but not all, places. You must be adventurous as we were and tried a wonderful noodle house where the young staff made successful attempts at translating with their phones as we did with ours. They went out of their way to accommodate us at "Why Wait till Chengdu". This was a great experience and pretty good food. Do not expect this to happen everywhere. You will be asked to come in (Chinese speaking) by some while others will ignore you.

You cannot really go wrong staying here. I would consider this hotel again, should I return to Shanghai. Be prepared for an experience you will remember as you explore the area, both negative and positive. If they know you will not purchase anything, you will be totally ignored, such as when I visited the local tropical fish/cricket/bird mart that is within walking distance, where I was a non-person, and more or less non-existent to them. On the other hand, many vendors and shops are very engaging as the anticipation of making money makes them smile.

Booked a superior double room during my recent trip and was pleased with it. Room was cleaned everyday, water and tea were promptly refilled. The receptionists were very helpful with our questions and requests. Location wise is just 2 mins to Da Shi Jie subway station, 10 -15 mins by foot to People's Square / Shou Ning Road (where you'll find lots of seafood), 45 mins to Pudong airport. The neighborhood is safe and they have many delicious food around. Overall, it's a good hotel and location to be at.

A shower cabin with a black mold. Smells terribly. Huge bugs. No mini bar. Good things are : a good location, subway nearby, many restaurants, shops, parks, nice view threw the window, good English speaking lobby employees.

The hotel is in a nice location, reception is located on the first floor.
The room was quite big and clean. We stayed for four nights and each day the cleaning lady did a really good job.
The staff spoke adequately english and could answer all of our question.
They sometimes host Chinese weddings in the restaurant, it was fun to peek in and we were never disturbed at all, you could hear nothing in the upper floors.
All in all I would recommend this hotel, also the price is very reasonnable for the quality you get.

My first impression of this hotel was that it looked a bit dated. However, the rooms have been nicely renovated with modern touches; I liked it. The duvet was super comfortable and the mattress firm, like most other China hotels. The bedding was clean; no complaints there. I always had a good night's sleep.

The only thing preventing people in the room from seeing you in the shower are the blinds behind the big glass panel separating the room from the toilet. It's ok if you are staying alone or with people you don't mind accidentally seeing your "bits". Otherwise, keep those blinds tightly shut!

The odd thing about the minibar is that there was nothing in it. I'd have expected there to be at least a couple of bottles of water, but there wasn't. There were 2 (yes, TWO) teabags in the drawer. No instant coffee, creamer or even sugar. Bizarre. The teabags looked very lonely.

The buffet breakfast was average, not very much variety but enough for a business traveler who only wants a quick bite.

My one main gripe about this place is that you can only get wifi in the lobby. I couldn't get wifi from my bed, but I could if I stood behind my room door. Believe me, I felt a little ridiculous, but at least wifi was free.

We had mixed feelings about this hotel. But I think one thing that was clear that for about $80/night, it was a great deal--right on the park adjoining People's Square. We strolled easily over to the Shanghai Museum, walked to the main part of the Bund in 15 minutes easily, and could walk to parts of the French Concession in 15-20 minutes. There was also a subway stop (line 8, I believe) mere steps from the front door.

Check-in started off a bit rocky, despite the beautiful old lobby, as we were kept waiting for a while and were not offered water or anything, which we could have really used after a long journey. However, my impression of the front desk staff improved when they gave us a fantastic recommendation for a soup dumpling place. And once we got to our room, we were pretty pleased with it. It was not huge (we didn't have the smallest room category either), but it was well laid out. The bathroom was spacious and had a huge rain shower and full bathtub. The toiletries were all nice as well. There was a big closet with bathrobes and slippers, as well as a safe. We also had a lovely view onto a park--we had chosen that view, despite being told it could be noisy from the street. We did not find it too noisy at all, but we are used to living in noisy city apartments. I don't normally choose rooms for views, but this one was very pleasant.

A couple issues: the lack of wi-fi in the rooms is absurd. We actually could get the lobby's wi-fi in our room pretty reliably until the last day, when the signal seemed to just disappear. But it is silly in this day and age not to have the rooms set up for wi-fi. The TV that doubled as a computer was not an adequate substitution.

Lastly, there were some crumbs on the coffee table when we arrived. I brushed them onto the floor and later noticed they were never vacuumed up during our two-night stay. This gave me pause.

However, the room was very comfortable overall, and the location just can't be beat. I would consider staying there again just for the location--we didn't see much else in that area for such a good price.

Hi, you should ask the reception for an early check in. At 5am the Shanghai Express train should work, then you can use it to get from the airport to the city and then take the metro.
Answer from TaldoraTraveler

You can either take a taxi or take the Metro. Dashijie metro station is directly under the hotel. You would take line 2 from Hongqiao, then change at Peoples Square to line 10. I've done it many times and its really easy but can be hectic at "peak hour".

Hello we are not a budget hotel chain and do not sell cheap hotel rooms sorry, we are a mid-scale brand with rates 400 to 800 CNY depending upon 6 SH locations. You might try Jinjiang Inns for a rate under 400 CNY. Good hunting
