Had a great stay with my colleagues for some meetings in Shanghai and decided to stay in the Portman Ritz instead of the one in Pudong. All the usual bells and whistles one expects but was particularly impressed by the housekeeping staff. I normally work from the room and have somewhat odd hours - Ariel, Hanny, and Joyce were super accommodating with my schedule and needs. Not only was the room always clean, they were basically invisible and not disruptive. I wish my own ayis were this professional. The ritz is always a 5 star experience but these three heroes deserve 6.

The hotel has a prime location being located just a short walking distance to old, charming part of Shanghai as well as being in proximity of hundreds top quality local and international restaurants. But what makes this property one of the kind is professionalism and attention to details of every member of hotel staff. staying in hotels for most part of the year I don’t pay too much attention to different hotels, but this property’s employees made stay remarkable. It is level of hospitality unique not only for China but for the whole World.
Rooms maybe are a little outdated but are extremely well maintained and clean. The hotel is definitely a Shanghai’s landmark and has its charm.
The example of work culture of hotel staff is definitely given as example by management. It felt very special to have our stay supervised by management including DoR and Mr. Emre

This time I stayed here for two weeks. Although the hotel is a little old, it has been decorated. What impresses me most is house keeper.
Wendy knows that I am a regular guest, so she cleans my room carefully every day, dresses up many animals with towel, and leaves a note for me every day. This experience makes me fall in love with this hotel deeply
Although Wendy is only a hotel cleaner, but she is using her own actions to retain guests, this conscientious attitude is worthy of praise

While the Ritz is still at the top of the food chain as far as hotels go in terms of poshness and luxury, I was disappointed with the value it is delivered. In today's world of fierce competition in the hotel industry, even the top seeded brands are not immune from the pressure to deliver value. In fact, the higher the brand, the higher are the expectations. In the case of the Ritz it seems that at the top of the Marriott brand food chain, I actually got less value.

The good:
The room and the common areas are well appointed, well maintained and suitable luxurious. The bed very comfortable, amenities up to par.

Service is attentive, almost too much. Staff in the lobby usher you from the front door right to the elevators, or restaurants, or wherever you are going - no complaints there.

The not so good:
Design of the front entrance to the room is a bit awkward - a narrow corridor with large closet doors that, when opened, block the way. Shower door did not close properly.

One dinner I had at the Portman restaurant was ok, but nothing special. Nasi goreng meal was sufficient in size, but the quality of the food did not justify the hotel price premium. Perhaps it should not have been a surprise that the restaurant was nearly empty that evening. Also tried one breakfast. This time the place was full, but likely with guests whose rate included breakfast. Ordered Eggs Benedict from the a la carte menu - ok, at best. Bacon was charred and took a long time to get the plate delivered to the table.

Checkout took over 15 min and three agents behind the desk had to consult how to split out my food and beverage charges from the room charges onto a separate bill.

Where the value proposition has failed as well was on the Platinum Elite benefits. I got the standard stuff like the bonus points, late check out. At other brands of the chain I also got upgrades, with access to the lounge. Here, I got an upgrade to a corner room (not sure how it was different from the regular room in terms of appointment), but no lounge access or breakfast. Disappointing, as these were the benefits I regularly got at Marriotts, Sheratons, Westins and other Bonvoy brands.

Being here in Portman for almost 40+ days already. Overall very comfortable except that the breakfast-to-go is a bit boring so I didn’t really take it everyday.

The room is good with nice view facing the West Nanjing Road and the lady Lilian Zhang who tidy my room is very sincere and friendly, always wearing a smiling face and cheerful, thank you.

This short trip to Shanghai chose to stay in Portman because the hotel is located in a unique location, convenient transportation, next to Henglong, a street is very convenient. But I was more surprised to come to the hotel. I was in the executive lounge angel to check in. The little sister was not only beautiful, but her professional quality and attitude towards the guests were both praised by her thumbs. I like to live on the high floor. Angel helps me arrange 42 floors. The experience of administrative suite is still good, clean and tidy, and the room is positive. After going to the lounge and taking afternoon tea, angel greeted me warmly. She always wanted to meet your needs in the first time. I hope other hotels can come to learn.

I stayed at the Portman Ritz at the end of September and was super happy with everything. The location is fantastic, service is good, and the physical product was very charming, classic. Welcome amenities were great, thanks to Sander for gracious welcome at the first floor. Lisa at the Check in (at the Club Lounge) was very friendly and professional. I had requested an iron and ironing board prior to my arrival, I had received a welcome message from the staff (I think Helen) who placed it, offering assistance. I felt very happy with the attention, that I finally asked hotel to iron/launder my shirts professionally. I visited the club lounge a few times and Angel and her team there were fantastic! From the wait staff to the culinary team, everyone did their very best to make me feel as a vip. Finally, not to forget to mention Louis at the bar (first floor), who was very nice and attentative with mixing our gin tonics. I strongly recommend the hotel, for any purpose. Good service, great location, easily to get Didi/taxi, lot of things to do around the hotel. Finally, kudos to Sander and the great team he has over there.

There's no big birthday party for my daughter this year due to COVID-19, so she decided to have a birthday sleepover party with her BFFs. Luckily we chose The Portman Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, the hotel gave us an incredibly unforgettable birthday celebration. Specially thanks to Andrian Paz, guest relationship manager, who has been super creative and thoughtful in room decoration and set-up. He prepared beautiful cupcakes, balloons, kids toys, kids slippers and bathrobes, and even my daughter's photos in the room, which have brought a lot of surprises for the girls. I would definitely recommend families to celebrate your important days here in this hotel. For families with kids, please get a tent in the room. It only costs RMB180+tax/exp., but is big enough for a teenager to sleep in it during the night. I paid for 2 tents in our bedroom this time, which are soooo loved by the girls. We would love to come back again! Big thanks to Andrian!

The staff here are super welcoming as always. I come here for biz trips and stay here most of the times because of its location and quiet surroundings.
Would reccomend people who want good location, close to many restaurants, and easy access to public transportation(bus and metro) to stay here.

My wife and I enjoyed a lovely stay over the holidays at this fabulous hotel. The staff went above and beyond to ensure we had a wonderful time, especially Samuel who was incredibly helpful and gracious. The hotel is about a six minute walk from the metro station and centrally located in a high end shopping district. We enjoyed breakfast at the hotel each morning which was a very broad buffet with Chinese and western options. I sincerely hope our travels bring us back to the Portman Ritz!

Hi Lauren, the Portman-Ritz is convenient - it's in the center of Puxi downtown and about 15 min drive away from The Bund. To the best of my recollection I think there were several metro stations on Nanjing Rd (close to the shopping area and Jing'an Temple) - it's about 5 to 10 min walk from the hotel.
