The standard of the Phoenix hostel is very high. Our double room and bathroom was spotlessly clean and tended to daily by staff. The room size was adequate and very bright due to the huge window. Triple rooms had huge floor space. The facilities included A/C, TV & water filter. The hostel roof top bar was great for relaxing, and the restaurant downstairs was extremely popular. The bed was soft, which can be a bonus in China and the linen was clean and of good quality. The desk staff all had good english and were very helpful in translating the restuarant's menu which was in Chinese only. It was definitely value for money. The Phoenix is in a great location, just under 10mins walk to People's Square and close to two subway stations. We would not look anywhere else should we return to Shanghai.

For the price and location, this place was great. We arrived late but check-in was quick and friendly. We were walked to our room, which was decent. It was clean and the bathroom was clean. The bed was firm, as is the case in much of Asia. There were chalkboards around promoting all of their various activities and games. We only stayed one night so didn't have time to join, but it seemed like it would be fun. All in all, we'd stay here again.

Decent hostelish place to crash right near Peoples Square. Sheets were clean in our 2 rooms. Kind of funky bathrooms. Strong smell of bug spray in one room. Not a great place to hang out in your room, but you don't travel to Shanghai to hang out in your hostel room, right?, Really easy metro access to and from Pudong airport, follow the hotel's directions carefully and you are good. In July it was super HOT and there is only sporadic AC in the halls while they are cleaning rooms, and in the rooms AC only works when you are there and put your key in the switch. So, the trip up the elevator and down the hall and then the time to cool off the hot room was a bit of a drag. But it saves electricity-who says China's not green?! Try the 'hot pot' restaurants in the neighborhood-great fun! Staff were helpful giving us bus directions and some translation cards to get us to/from water towns.

First, the name is The Phoenix and it is a hostel. At that, it is the nicest hostel that we stayed at in China. The location is excellent as it is just a 10 minute walk to People's Square and Starbucks, and one minute from the subway. There are plenty of restaurants and convenient stores in the neighborhood too.

My sister and I stayed in a private triple room because the doubles were booked and it was still cheaper than the hotel we had to stay at the previous night. So the room was huge with a TV, fridge, AC and nice bathroom with a hot shower. The room was clean too.

There is wifi access throughout the hostel and free computers to use at the rooftop bar. The rooftop was nice and the bar served up drinks and breakfast.

The staff was so nice, friendly and helpful. They spoke English and helped us book train tickets.

I'd definitely stay here again!

This is a hostel, not a hotel. For the price, the stay was well worth it.

Contray to other reviews that reported dirty toliets, rats, smelly neighbouring shop, etc, I found the hostel perfectly fine. No rats for sure. The hostel is pretty clean and looked rather new. The hostel is well located along a food street, hence has many excellent restaurants and street side stalls within walking distance. Explains the smell when you walk up. In fact, the noodles smelt great. No smell in the rooms though.

We enjoyed our stay at The Phoenix Hostel in Shanghai. We thought the location was great for getting around to the areas we wanted to see. It is conveniently located only one or two minutes walk to (blue line 8)DaShiJie metro station, one station after the people's square station and only a few steps away from one of the main streets called Yan'an which takes 10-15 mins to walk to get to the Bund.

We stayed in a double ensuite room and the room was pretty spacious for a hostel. We had free wifi, but I guess it can be temperamental so they gave us a cable at check in. The internet still gave out on us a few times but hey, it was free. There was a bit of mold on one of the walls and one night we could hear rats or some other animal scampering through the ceiling but the pillows were really comfortable and we weren't disturbed too much from sleep. We could hear people downstairs vaguely but not enough to bother us. The bathroom was new and they give you a couple toiletries so that was nice. A little strange that it had a plastic floor though. They had hanging signs for the door if you wanted your room cleaned or left undisturbed.

There is a restaurant downstairs, which you will see since the elevator they take you up is through the restaurant (there are stairs in the lobby too though). This place only has one English menu for those who can't read Chinese but the food was pretty good. The hostel also has a rooftop bar with a view but we didn't really use it much.

One thing we would recommend against is using their laundry service. Your clothes will come back smelling of grease and generally unpleasant. Overall, we were happy with The Phoenix hostel and would recommend it.

Amazing place to stay in Shanghai. We really recommend it, because of the laid back atmosphere. The restaurant downstairs is cheap and has good food. Upstairs is a little rooftopbar, also affordable and a cool place to hangout. We had a double room with bathroom. It was nice and clean.

The location is very good. With a metrostation just around the corner and a 20 min. walk to the Bund.

We were there with a group tour. If we come back to Shanghai, we will definitely stay there again.

Stayed in a private room for 3 nights. Everything was clean and tidy, good security and staff very friendly! It’s just that there aren’t really any indoor common area and if you go during the cold months it’s just impossible to sit outside, making for no atmosphere at all. The little bar on the roof is ridiculously overpriced! 20 RMB for a glass of powdered OJ, come on!! But a lot of food around the area so it wasn’t a big problem.

I stayed here for two night's, and every part of the accommodation exceeded expectations. The friendly staff, who speak a great amount of English, allowed me to check in early after a long flight. I stayed in a small private room, with its own bathroom. It was very clean and comfortable. The location is fantastic- a short walk to metro and bus stops, as well as the city sightseeing bus tour stops. The hostel has more of a hotel feel at a fraction of the cost, especially if you stay in a private room. It is surrounded by cheap restaurants, but the restaurant attached to the hostel serves amazing food (try the beef and chives dumplings!). Overall, a fantastic place to stay!
