Booked thru Booking.com (as no rooms available in Ascott's website during the dates 28June to 2 July23) and came with a free car ride to hotel from airport. They only waited 45min from scheduled arrival time and charged me RMB1 per minute if any delays. Took me 2.5hours from landing to clearing Customs.Ended up paying RMB150 for waiting charges.Could have just taken a taxi instead of the driver kept calling me asking when I can exit from Custom but I cant tell them to work faster. Its so annoying with this free ride.
1. Hotel is centrally located with Metro Line 1 entrance just across the street.
2. Hotel is a bit old and you can see it in the room's conditions. It could have been good if they have plug points at the working desk and living area.
3. The TVs are old and have grainy pictures and the living room's sound system doesnt work. The kitchen is ok with washing & dry machine. The free coffee and tea a bit tired with just Nescafe and Lipton teabags. They gave us 2 set of toothbrushs on check in and thats what you get as room amenities. They need to properly label the shampoo, conditioner and body wash tubes in the shower as all 3 looked the same design and only have very small words describing which is which.
4. We booked our room with breakfast . You choose 2 mains from a one pager and then buffet bread, salad and fruit with coffee and tea. The western mains are Ok but the Asian ones are not up to mark of a good 4 to 5 stars hotel standard. We have a char siew bun and you cant tell what it is anyway. They need to raise the standard if they want more people taking their breakfast as we noticed the coffeehouse is quite empty. Anyway, you can go down to B1 or B2 of the Metro Line1 for many food outlets.
5. When checkout, you need to "park"your space as people just dont queue and worst is that the reception entertained them and have no respect for people who queue. Only 2 staff working, probably understaffed and only one can speak and understand English.
I think the hotel need upgrading and more training and more staff before we consider it again.

Overall service was pretty good and the place has great facilities, table tennis, tennis, pool, great gym, close to Lots of shops.

My 3 rating comes from two areas.

1. We asked for connecting rooms and we were told we had to be on separate floors! Eventually we took a downgraded room just to be beside each other!!! No refunds on that!

2. Poor breakfast. They offer semi buffet style which I like but the delivery was not up to scratch. Eg I asked for 2 poached eggs and it came swimming in water. Hash browns were overcooked and cooked to a crisp. Salmon scrambled eggs came out like a fried omelette, Chinese dumplings came out cold.

The buffet continental breakfast was just an eclectic mix.

Not sure I'd come back to this hotel as I think there's better options even though I facilities are excellent.

We enjoyed staying in this place and had a good two bed apartment for eight nights over New Year. It was well serviced and well appointed. It was a little tired in places but still very good. The location is great and very much part of the French Concession shopping world. There is a metro just down the street and one can walk easily to many great places. There is an excellent international supermarket which we used a lot so we could east in the apartment. The only thing I would say is that the rooms were very expensive although this is probably explained by New Year.

I’m writing this review lying in bed, listening to a full conversation of the neighbour next door on his phone. The other neighbour next door is watching TV and I can hear it all. I am gobsmacked. It’s like being in a traffic jam (on-a Tuesday night). I had tried to forget the dated rooms, no room service (due to covid apparently except there is no mask wearing or asking for health codes), sauna and steam room don’t work. I’ve stayed at Ascotts in Beijing and in other countries and am a loyal customer but this is a bad joke. If you want a hotel that feels like a used car from 20 years ago that still charges new car prices, then get in line! Surely the Ascott company must be cringing over this embarrassment to their glamorous chain. You know it’s bad when you cannot even make out the numbers in the lift they are so worn out!

The Ascott has a GREAT location and is a good hotel. Service is friendly and they have upgraded their breakfast options over the past three years and now have a very good in-house restaurant.

My main - and really only - complaint is that our room is in need of some basic maintenance and TLC. Rooms should be updated periodically and it seems this has been somewhat neglected at the Ascott.

I was staying in the hotel after a gap of about 7 years (last i stayed with them was 2016). The property is very nicely located and a 5 minutes walk from Xintandi also a 1 minute walk from Metro Station.

We choose a Suite room so we had a separate living room and a separate bedroom. Both were decent in size (not very big). The living room had a kitchenette, a dinning table for 2 people and a sofa sitting for 4 people.

A door separated the bedroom. The room had all possible amenities. Surprisingly the telephone handsets were out of order, One of the power socket in kitchen was not working. Also there is no power socket in the sofa area.

All the furniture and the Kitchen accessories were either old or dented and requires urgent renovation.

The bathroom was also moderately spaced. The bathing experience was a decent one. For the bed, it was a little uncomfortable probably the mattress. I did not had best pf the sleeps.

The property has a indoor pool and a gym. The breakfast was served on 6th floor and the service and food was very good.

A team of professional and warm people led by GM Shawn Ong. We felt welcomed the moment we entered the hotel. Room is fully equipped and spacious. Location is superb with eateries, spa and shopping. Good for families as well. We enjoyed our stay very much and strongly recommend anyone to stay with them when you visit Shanghai.

I’m an American expat, and I’ve been living at the Ascott for 1 month. When moving here, it was difficult to find answers to all my questions, so I want to provide all the information that I can for other expats moving to Shanghai. My company is paying for my residence, so price is not considered in my review or rating.

The Hotel
I’m living in a 1 bedroom premier apartment. Overall, I think it is very nice. Within a floor, there are several different layouts due to the shape of the building. Some are better than others. For a western “open style” layout, I recommend the rooms by the elevators (06/07 on higher floors, 07/08 on lower floors). The rooms with the most storage are 09 and 04 on the higher floors. 03/10 on the higher floors have lots of storage but a compact living area. I have not seen the others.

The workout area is decent in size, although it can get crowded at times. It has 4 treadmills, some machines, a total body gym-type machines, and plenty of dumb bells. They have a yoga/multipurpose room that can also be set up with ping pong. There is also a shallow indoor pool (haven’t used it), and an outdoor basketball/tennis court (although the weather is often poor). There is not a hot tub, but I think there is a steam room or a sauna in the locker rooms.

The service at the hotel is very good. They have responded to any questions or complaints quickly, and I feel safe leaving items at the desk for courier pickups or drop offs. Most people speak some level of English, so you can generally get what you need done.

Inside The Room
Apartments are serviced twice a week, and bed linens are changed once a week. Every room appears to have a separate shower and tub. All the showers I have seen have a rain shower option, which is nice. There is an outlet in each bathroom for a hairdryer. Vanities tend to be small, so be ready to share. They provide bathroom items (shampoo, etc) one time for free, then you have to buy them after that. I’d recommend bringing your own. You might also consider bringing additional wash cloths.

Bedrooms vary in layout between the rooms, but they all seem to have a king size bed with a set of drawers on each side. Ascott offers a few different pillow types, so you should be able to find something you like. Some rooms have desks, and in some rooms the desks are separate. They tend to be pretty big and have a direct connect for internet. Depending on the room, they may have a walk-in joint closet or two separate but similar closets for hanging cloths with some racks. My wife and I found these to be large enough when combined with the bedside drawers. The bedroom also has a TV.

The living area has 1-2 chairs, a couch, a coffee table, and 1-2 side tables. The couch is big enough for a smaller person to sleep on, although they are as hard as a table. The TVs appear to be about 42” with ‘lower’ definition, but that may be based on the feed. Each room comes with an entertainment system (CD/DVD and AUX—although no AUX cable is provided) and some storage below the TV. There are also some shelves in the living area that are ideal for small storage.

The kitchen comes with pretty much everything you need—a 2 burner induction cooking hob, a toaster, a coffee maker, a small microwave, a small oven, a fridge, and a dish sanitizer. A dish sanitizer just provides heat for your dishes—it is NOT a dishwasher. You will need to handwash your dishes, but this seems pretty common. If you are feeling evil, the maid will wash some dishes for you if you leave them out. Counterspace and storage varies by apartment, but it’s pretty decent. They provide plenty of plates, but there is a small number of glasses, bowls, and silverware. We went out and bought some large glasses to supplement what they have. They provide a few small cooking dishes and utensils, but you may want to pick up an extra mixing bowl. The dish towels that they provide are so coarse and stiff that they can no longer be classified as towels. Pick up or bring a few of your own.

Every room provides a 2 person dining table, and some rooms have a breakfast counter with 2 stools. Additionally, the Ascott provides a 5 gallon water jug that can be changed out for about $5. This is a great service because the water is not drinkable here. You need to provide all of your own cooking supplies, including salt/pepper, oil, etc.

Each room has tons of light, including some big windows. Heaters are fast and effective, but difficult to control. Some windows can be opened slightly to let in a breeze.

The internet has VPN for American web sites. The hard line at the desk is decent, but the WIFI is not very good. It can get the job done, but it tends to be pretty slow and inconsistent. The Ascott has tried hard to help accommodate me in my requests for better internet, but I think it’s limited be the Chinese firewall and the VPN connection.

Location
The Ascott’s location is very good. I prefer this area over Jing’an. Pretty much anything you would need is in walking distance or a short cab ride. It’s in an expensive shopping area, but prices near downtown Shanghai are pretty expensive in general. My room looks out at Louis Vutton and Tiffany’s, haha. There is a metro line in the building next door on Line 1, and Line 8 is a 10 minute walk to the Dashijie station. People’s square is also a reasonably short walk, and the Bund is about 1.5 miles. You can easily walk to downtown, but probably not to Pudong. My favorite place nearby is Xin Tian Di, which is only a few blocks away. It’s a great place to get some good Western food and has a movie theatre.

The building itself has several restaurant and coffee shops. The south Hong Kong tower also has a nice selection (indoor walking bridge to get there), as well as K11 which has a food court next door.

There are 3 western grocery stores that I know of nearby: City Super, GL Market, an Bazaar. City Super is the closest and most expensive, while the other two are a little cheaper but still expensive. You can make a trek to some more local grocery stores to save some money, but we usually bite the bullet and walk to GL or Bazaar (about 8-10 minute walk).

I’ve stayed at this hotel before. It’s not a 5-star but quality-wise (hard product), it’s at the same level as a solid 3-1/2 star apartment style hotel room with a kitchenette and washer/dryer combo.

If you want to be very central to shopping and being a tourist in Shanghai, and maybe even swing a few meals in your own room with the desktop stove and mini-convection oven, then this is a good choice.

Or is ULTRA-convenient to walk to the famous hongkong Plaza and Xintiandi. So if you’re headed to Shanghai for luxury brand shopping, then Ascott will not only Dave you a bit of money that can go towards shopping, but you can walk everywhere.
