Located along the historic Bund with spectacular views of the Bund, Huangpu River, Pudong and the historic Wai Bai Du iron bridge, The Peninsula Shanghai perfectly blends with the historic architecture of its landmark neighbours. The Peninsula Shanghai, which opened in October 2009, is the first new building to be constructed on the historic Bund in over 60 years. Offering the best of Peninsula traditions and a range of signature services and facilities, including Shanghai's largest guestrooms and the city's highest staff-to-guest ratio, The Peninsula also heralds the return of parent company, The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited, to Shanghai where it owned and operated four of the city's premier hotels in the 1920s to 1940s - The Kalee, The Astor House, The Palace and The Majestic.

I very fortunately stayed recently at The Peninsula Shanghai Hotel for a three-day staycation.

The arrival experience was impeccable, the room absolutely gorgeous and luxurious; I particularly enjoyed all the small acts of kindness our housekeepers gave us placing cleaning wipes next to my laptop or Peninsula bookmarks next to my book for instance!

Breakfast was delicious and serene, and the gym quiet and very pristine clean.

I can’t wait to stay again!

Thank You to Hotel Manager Moky Lam and his team!

My family wanted to do a quick trip to Shanghai. It was my 3rd time being in this huge city (I'm not much of a city person). The Peninsula is a wonderful hotel and very up-scale. The rooms are very large and like all the other Peninsula hotels, the design is very classic. It's always been one of my favorite hotels to stay in...they have huge walk-in closets, great views, extremely large safe (so you can put things like your laptop in there) and it's always clean.

It’s amazing how good the service is at this place, it’s my go to place in Shanghai when I want to arrange a special event, what I like most is the attention to details, the rooms are great, the service even better and the food nothing but spectacular.

But what sets this apart demo other hotels is that nothing is impossible, ask and they will provide, flowers, nice romantic arrangements, gifts you name it.

Recommend this to everyone who wants the best service there is.

I really wanted to give this hotel 5*, but I had to remove a star because of the crowd and housekeeping.

But before I get into that, I must say that the rooms are much better than the photos. I am not a fan of the decor but somehow it works.

I love the room layout and they even generously gave us an upgrade. The concierge was also excellent! They arranged restaurant reservations and made a special Milo Dinosaur on Christmas Day for my 3 year old since it’s all she wanted this Christmas. The bear was also a nice touch!

However, the housekeeping is always talking really loudly on the phone. The room could be cleaner and the amenities were inconsistent on all days, such as the complimentary water, tea and coffee varied in number every single day.

What I can’t stand though is the crowd. First, the lobby was so busy that no one helped us with our luggage when we arrived. The help came very belatedly.

The lobby is like a zoo at all hours. The line to the lobby lounge extends all the way to the elevator. There’s also a line to check-in/out. I don’t know if they like it this way, but it’s quite disruptive and it impedes the guests’ movement already. They should get some tips from Four Seasons where it’s never like a zoo despite being fully booked. Every inch of the lobby is literally packed from 8am until midnight with people posing ridiculously.

We ate at Yi Ling twice. First time was excellent. Second time, they ran out of the dish we wanted, which is why we came back. Food and service were not as great so definitely won’t be going back a third time.

Lastly, what annoys me most is the noise from the hallway. You can hear other guests shouting, laughing and banging doors really loudly to the point the I went to check out Capella hotel.

Other than that, I really loved this hotel and service was amazing.

I had planned a business day trip to Shanghai from Beijing on Sept 1. Upon my check-in at the Shanghai airport to return to Beijing that evening, I was asked to show my results of the Covid test valid within 48 hours. Of course, I did not have it for no one told me that it was required, hence I was unable to return to Beijing.

Tony from the hotel who also gave me a warm welcome upon arrival that morning, escorted me to the check-in counter that evening. He was extremely helpful and immediately called his supervisor to see what can be done. Unfortunately, I was still unable to leave. He then called back the hotel car to take me back to the hotel.

In addition, he is aware that I smoke and lighters are not allowed on planes in China. The first thing when he welcomed me at the airport, he handed over a lighter to me. This gesture is highly appreciated!!

When I returned to the hotel, Danny the concierge helped me taking the Covid test immediately. He also helped me to download the App and showed me how to obtain the results.

A hotel car was already on standby to take me to the Covid test centre.

I would like to congratulate Ricci and his team for their efficiency. Without their assistance, I will probably be still stuck in Shanghai. Bravo Ricci!!!!

Once again thank you everyone.

I had a fantastic stay at Peninsula following my mandatory 2 week quarantine. For a an Englishman to try to deal with all the mandatory covid requirements is was a relief when Mike Zhang and the the excellent team at the hotel literally hand held men through everything i need to do in order to be set up and able to venture safely out the hotel. This included taking me to get local SIM card, setting up the required applications on my iPhone as well as establishing the required links to my British credit cards. I” cannot thank Mike and his team enough. As for the hotel, room and food everything was expertly as expected such quality and comfort throughout the hotel and especially the customer service delivered by each of the staff members from front of house to the cleaning team. Finally the position of the hotel on the Bund was the icing on the cake!! Thank you Mike and everyone for your warm welcome and taking care of me.

Best regards, Chris

Best hotel in Shanghai. I stayed with my family over the holidays. They have the best blackout curtains of any hotel, no light peeping at all. We ended up oversleeping everyday. And very functional room, we actually used the other furniture like the office desk and sofa. Rooms were clean and modern despite not being renovated. Pretty great condition. And terrific concierge, the only ones in my entire trip that smiled. Hats off to ricci and danny. Really top notch service that beat all the other hotels we stayed at in china.

A classic luxury hotel in outstanding location! The spacious lobby and lounge gave a sense of comfort and tranquility! The rooms had outstanding view! The breakfast was of great quality! As to service we were especially pleased with the service of Caroline, who was friendly, attentive, had great communication skills and spoke fluent English! As to the Western Cuisine restaurant ( if I am not mistaken on the 13-th floor), sorry to say, but it was a huge disappointment! The service was great, by the food was average to below! We had to wait quite a long time and pay a huge some of money for a small piece of mediocre food for which we feel robbed! Otherwise than that a nice hotel to stay while in Shanghai!

The air conditioning is not good - can’t imagine how awful it must be in summer as it was too warm in springtime.

While breakfast is nice, the service is abysmal. If guests are unable to serve coffee and juice for themselves, then you need to serve them promptly.

To be perfectly honest, this hotel was poor quality when compared to peninsula hotels elsewhere and is overpriced for what you get.

Absolutely love the Peninsula brand and this is definitely one of their best hotels!

Service, staff and in hotel dining is always spectacular. If you visit you must go to the rooftop bar for amazing views of the Bund at night time... you won't be disappointed!

$200 for laundry is a bit excessive but other than that, everything was fantastic!

The hotel is outstanding so I’d stay there regardless of whether the venue is 30 or 45 min. BTW, depending on time of day, traffic can be hectic so give yourself plenty of time to get there. And in F1 racing, it can be crowded near & around the track. So enjoy a great hotel & plan plenty of time getting there.
