We are frequent visitors to Shanghai and stayed in a one bedroom suite at the Capella for three nights.
This property is bar none is the best overall hotel experience we have had in Shanghai.
The staff was incredibly courteous and attentive, not least general manager Ronan. Their professionalism is rare in the Mainland China.
The on-site food was top-notch, both from the bakery and the Restaurant Le Comptoir de Pierre Gagnaire. The sushi restaurant in the same compound, recommended by Ronan and run by a Japanese chef, was superlative. A branch of % Arabica is just across the street, serving very good coffee. We liked High Yaki, a high concept izakaya, also across the street.
The hotel is on a beautiful tree-lined street in the French Concession, away from high rises of Pudong but within easy driving distance. The street gets plenty of foot traffic, yet the rooms are quite some distance back from the street and are very quiet.
Last but not least, the rooms are lavishly renovated Shikumen houses, giving guests a quintessentially Shanghai experience unrivaled in the city.
For an ultra luxe experience that gives visitors a serene feel and a true sense of place, Capella stands head and shoulders above every other hotel in the city.

I travel a lot to Shanghai with my husband and noted this hotel recently from the list of American Express fine hotels. It offered buy 2 get 1 free. I stayed for 3 nights and was so much impressed by this hotel and its staff, that’s why I write this review.

Much has been said by the other reviewers, I just like to add that I won’t forget the townhouses’ 4-meter-height ceilings, the beautiful wooden doors, and the finger-licking treats offered daily to the room as well as at the small library. I sure will stay at this hotel again even without the AE promotion.

Thanks the Capella team for the heartfelt services rendered (eg I didn’t need to repeat how I wanted my tea made at the library or breakfast). Keep up the great work!

What a beautiful hotel with incredible service to match. Special thanks to Andrei! They have thought of every single little detail and staff go out of their way to make sure you have the most comfortable stay. The only thing I will say is there is no sound insulation as they have kept the original buildings as is so you will hear neighbours. Bring earplugs or a sound machine if you are super sensitive to sounds.

I also had a wonderful massage at the spa and experienced a floatation tank for the first time. Again, just superb service.

The afternoon tea at the restaurant was delightful as was breakfast. I really like that it was table service for breakfast and the staff were super attentive.

Looking forward to my next stay!

Attentive culturist who sent us ginger tea after knowing that one family member has a slight cold; nice welcome pastry and pretty turn down amenities each night; heart-warming housekeeper and attentive restaurant staff — we experienced true hospitality during our 4-day staycation. Everyone is warm and smiley, you feel they are happy being where they are and served truly from the heart. Our Christmas has been all the more delightful despite not being able to fly home. Thank you!

Capella went above and beyond in helping me plan a night getaway for my husband's birthday. The room was beautiful with some decorations and a cake. The recommendation of restaurants and bars nearby was helpful as we explored that little corner of Puxi.

The Capella is really a very special place to stay. Perfect location within the French concession to discover the most interesting part of the city in perfectly restored old townhouses and with an unbeatable service. My family and i enjoyed the stay very much and the staff is really great in every way. Special thanks to Andrei who really goes the extra mile and really cares.

Excellent service! Went to Shanghai for business without car app and my Alipay died on me. Hotel staff went out of their way to help. Helped me solved all my problems. Booked excellent restaurants for me and got me good seats, despite late reservations. Could not ask for more.
This hotel goes to great length to make sure that their customers are happy. I have no hesitation in recommending it to those who look for good service from their hotel.
Hotel is set in a very good surroundings and the villas are beautiful. A bit disappointed with the bathroom as it is located on a different floor from the guest room. But this cannot be helped due to the fact that the hotel rooms are fashioned from historic buildings and the size of the each floor is limited. The slight disappointment was more than made good by the superb service of the hotel.

Very nice and comfy/spacious stay. Nice spa and gym facilities, but no swimming pool. Many cafes around the area and dining options too, but may be pricey. During the warmer weather, mosquito could be a problem, but during autumn or winter, should be perfect. nice service too!

Was fortunate to spend a couple nights here. Staff was considerate throughout, and we were wowed by the shikumen residences. Having a multifloor villa to ourselves was a delight and we loved the decor with wooden paneling and elegant art and floral pieces. Outside of our villa, the hotel property is highly photogenic, with ivy covered brick facades, calming pools, and a former water tower turned modern neon lighting at night. This neighborhood is very walkable too. When we return to Shanghai, Capella will be top of our list.

Greatly enjoyed our one night stay during Chinese New Year holiday. Hotel grounds and room are very visually appealing. Customer service level is higher than any other hotel I have experienced in China. Breakfast and dinner were both excellent at the French restaurant. Only complaint was the sleep quality. Pillows provided were not comfortable at all (too flat) and the room air was too warm and dry.
