Despite some setbacks, Captain Hostel is a great way to stay on Shanghai's riverfront Bund without paying hundreds of USD for a luxury hotel.

Just as a heads up, we did have some problems. I booked ahead online for the Yan'an Rd. branch, to make sure our rooms were secure. However, on the day our group of 10 arrived at the hostel, we were told that they had no rooms available. Strange, I booked in advance. Sorry, there are no rooms available, they said again. Our group was exhausted and we had a pair of 70+ folks with our group, so began to make a bit of a stink. They then told me that there were some problems with the water. Or electricity. No rooms available sorry, but you're going to have to go to the Fuzhou Rd. Branch. I was angry because we booked this Bund front branch for the view AND because it was newer. Based on an earlier recon visit, I saw that the rooms were clean and satisfactory enough for such a large group. Even though they paid for taxis to take us a couple blocks to the Fuzhou branch, I was not pleased with this. What's the point of pre-booking?

The Fuzhou Rd. branch was passable. The woman at the front desk, who I assume is the manager on duty (the underlings deferred to her for everything) was very rude. Always frowning, ignoring people who were waiting for service, and overall not a pleasant lady to be around. The rest of the staff, especially the cleaning ladies, were great, however.

Here, you are basically paying for the view. The rooftop bar/lounge sells drinks for exorbitant prices, but you have an unhindered view of Lujiazui. It is stunning, if you don't want to spring for a meal at any of the Bund restaurants OR a 80 RMB cocktail at M on the Bund. The rest of the hostel is barely passable. The beds in our rooms (on the 5th floor) were made of plywood and it felt like sleeping on a bench. The floor would have been more comfortable, but the carpet is filthy. The bathroom was tidy enough, but the creeping black mold is unsightly. The TV has cable, so that is a plus if you need to watch television during your stay. Wi-fi is only accessible in the aforementioned exorbitantly priced bar on the roof.

Note for those traveling with people who don't manage well with stairs: staying on the 6th floor requires that you get off the elevator on the 5th floor, then hike up with your luggage. Also, the noise from the lounge/bar is very annoying at night. You can get a bit of the wi-fi if you're staying on the 5th floor, but it is a very faint signal.

In summary, I'd recommend this place only for the view and location. If you simply must stay on the Bund, then this is affordable and passable. You're a 10 minute walk from Nanjing East Rd. Station (Line 2) and a ferry ride away from Lujiazui and Pudong. There's a convenience store and ICBC atm near the entrance, a jazz club across the street, and frequent taxis. In Shanghai, you could do a lot worse than this.

This is an excellent budget hotel in a wonderful location a short walk from the Bund and views of it from rooftop bar. We have stayed in both the Bund side hostels several times. Quite large double and family rooms, quite basic but adequate and typical Chinese in carpet cleanliness etc.
Excellent restaurant opposite, not the jazz bar, haven't tried that.
Wifi available if you buy drink at rooftop bar. Bandwidth of thisnon-existent, don't try emailing photos!

Like another reviewer said, this hostel is for everyone. There were students, family with children and older people during our stay.

We had one of the "first class rooms", which means private room, with a double bed and private bathroom. It was big and confortable, the bathroom was also big but the shower was not very clean. Room in general needs an upgrade. But at 400 yuan per night and half a block fron the Bund it´s a great deal.

The staff was nice and helpful, with pretty good English. Breakfast at 25 yuan for fried egg, ham, toast, juice and coffee is a good deal.

The only negative thing I have to say about the hotel is that we left our airplane tickets on the dresser drawer and a day later they were gone. Were they stolen? We don´t know.

If you want to stay in a good location for a good price, that's your spot.
But then don't expect to a three stars hotel.
Our flush didn't work, and our friends had cockroaches in her room. The room aren't well isolated in term of temperature and noise.

We arrived at 2:30 am in the morning, because of a delayed flight. We couldn't inform the hotel about our situation (we have no chinese phone and the hotel has no e-mail adress). So they gave our room away and couldn't offer us another room. The guy in the hotel even didn't help us to find another accomodation.
- OK bad luck so far!

When we wanted to use the hotel's wifi to find another accomodation, the guy from the hotel asked us to go. We promised to just search for an accomodation and go afterwards. The guy called the police to throw us out!!!!
That's inhuman and not acceptable! We haven't stayed in this hotel (for the other nights we booked) because of this event.

For Travelers: sort out another place to stay, there are plenty of nicer accomodations arround in which they behave better!
For the Hotel: think about your employee-politics. And thank you for nothing.

Yesterday afternoon I arrived in Captain Hostel and I found some blood stain in the mattress lining, I asked to change, but the cleaner said I need to ask in reception, but the receptionist asked to another guy, that guy followed me to the room and He said it was not necessary change because the sheet was clean. I told how disgusting that was and He insisted to me sleeping there. Another girl in my room asked if was possible change bed and He complained in chinese around 10 minutes. I changed bed and finally after long time He decided to take the disgusting mattress lining way (I suppose to wash it).
When I woke up I realize that there is no toilet paper in any bathroon (you need to buy your own toilet paper. I already saw that in bars, restaurants and tourist atractions, but it was the first time in a hostel).
Today I went to reception to use internet, because it is impossible in the room and the only 2 chairs were occupied, so I seated in another chair in front of the reception (place where you can order breakfast) and the guy asked me to go away, because he was serving business coffee (there was anyone there).
I hated this place! Rude people, terrible wifi and disgusting place (I always stay in hostels in my trips, I already visited more than 20 countries and that was one of worst places of my life).

If you don't mind very smelly and dirty toilet, unfriendly frontdesk staff, expensive beer
at rooftop cafe (up to 10x) and inconvenient to use bathroom, rock hard matteress, you may stay here.
The only thing worth mentioning about this place is location.

During the last 7 years I've been coming to China, I have stayed in many hotels and hostels and Captain's Hostel near the Bund in Shanghai was definately one of the best. I've stayed there 3 times in different years and was amazed everytime again by the perfect location, the friendly atmosphere and the very nice dorms. Very nice boat-style design, with an eye for details. The hot and powerful showers were wonderful and the bar at the top of the hostel has fantastic views of the bund (the only downside is that this bar used to be a bargain a few years ago, but prices of drinks are unfortunately up to Shanghai prime time standards now).

Highly recommended!!

Don’t stay in winter if you like heat! The rooms are heated, but the bathrooms are showers aren’t and the windows and doors are wide open letting snow and cold rain in. The toilets are western style, but they are very cramped and there aren’t any hooks so it’s hard to access any necessities while doing your business. Also, bring your own toilet paper, soap and towels!! I’m surprised there was hot water. It’s more like a refugee camp than a hostel!
Rooms don’t smell clean or fresh, but linen is clean. Also, no towels so bring your own!! It’s super close to the bund, but getting to the other side of the bund is no easy task and getting back without spending 200 rmb on a cab is even harder! If it’s cold out, you don’t want to trek all over trying to find a ferry or bridge to walk over (two things that are far and few between!
The upside is the rooftop bar and restaurant. If it weren’t for that place I’d give a one star. The bar is expensive, but what you’re saving on hotel prices, you can afford a delicious cocktail or four.

As a hostel, this one isn’t bad at all, the location is few mins walking from The Bud. I arrived around 10 pm and the check in was smooth. The place is clean and very easy to find. And the staff were friendly. I shared a room with locals, as it seems the hostel is more for locals than foreigners are. Room was good, with clean bed linen and the bathrooms were clean and tidy. The place is a bit old but that is what you pay for. I would stay and choose this hostel again, but maybe with a room with less people as it was so awkward not being able to communicate with the locals as they don’t speak much English.
They have a Storage room for your stuff if you wanna check out and roam the city without worrying about your bags.

"1.The room at the east side (when facing the Bund) is far away from the pub, better for light sleepers. 2. The hotel is non-smoking, but you can smoke in the hallway. Nobody seems to care anyway. 3. No bathroom supplies (toothbrush, tooth paste and stuff) for mix dorm guests."
