The MARRIOTT LUXURY CATEGORY – this comprises of a group of exquisite hotels under the brands JW Marriott, Ritz Carlton, St. Regis, W Hotel, Luxury Collection and Edition. In Kuala Lumpur, there are four of these “luxury” hotels and over the course of 10 months, I’ve been lucky enough to stay in three of them, all suites. The fourth, JW, was then closed for renovation. This review is a comparison between three of these hotels, St. Regis KL, W Hotel KL and Ritz Carlton KL from my stay at these hotels. How they compare to each other, from the hotel and suite itself, some of the restaurant, the service and the value. This comparison is not between the packages which was chosen (although I manage to get some good deals from each of these hotel). All of my stay at these three hotels were family staycations, for at least 2 nights at each hotel. I had been lucky enough to be upgrade by all three hotels to their suites, which includes the St. Regis Suite, W Marvelous Suite and the RC Club / Junior Suite. And I’ll start by giving my overall ranking of these three hotels for family staycation purposes, followed by the review and comparison: 1st Place : W Hotel (Full 5 stars) 2nd Place : St. Regis (Full 5 stars, very-very close to W, almost too close to call) 3rd Place : Ritz Carlton (4 stars with quite a large gap between the top 2) The Hotel: All three hotels have different themes which somewhat caters for different mood and purposes. However, both W Hotel (2018) & St. Regis (2016) are relatively new and this really show in the hotel itself, from the building design (more optimized space, more ceiling height, more natural light etc) to the common areas which are more modern in layout / design, the furniture still quite new, better lighting, ease of moving around within the hotel, much better parking etc. RC has been around for a while (built in 1997) and maybe underwent renovations / refurbishment in 2016. Nevertheless, the age of RC still shows in its building design, layout etc. Whereas the other two uses extensively ceiling to floor glass panels, RC KL building is based on windows. Somehow, RC also felt older despite the renovations. I’ve stayed in other RC’s before and I felt that RC KL is not quite as up to date or luxurious as other newer or more prestigious RCs. (It’s a bit like Jakarta – RC Mega Kuningan vs the RC Pacific Place… RC KL is more like RC Mega Kuningan). Nevertheless, RC KL guest list is impressive which includes Barack Obama, Mariah Carey, list goes on. From a view perspective, W Hotel is next to KLCC, so you get quite a good view of KLCC and you can also get a view of KL Tower. St. Regis is within KL Sentral which doesn’t provide great view, but you can see the lake gardens from some rooms. The area surrounding RC is very much developed, almost every side of RC is surrounded by another tall building, so its almost impossible to get any good view. In fact, at RC, you do have to close your curtains from evening onwards, since the next building is very close and can easily see what is happening. That doesn’t mean that the location of RC is bad, on the contrary, RC KL has the best location of all three hotel, being in the heart of Bukit Bintang. You are never far from anywhere in this happening place. St. Regis on the other hand is really situated in a different environment and would probably suit business travelers more than family staycations. All three hotels have the standard facilities – gym, spa, pool (RC has 2 pool but 1 was close during the time of stay). W hotel has an extra Wet Deck, which is a nice lounge area around the pool, which you can really have a nice time lounging & cocktailing around especially during the evenings, as it overlooks KLCC. I think St. Regis also has 2 pools, but 1 is reserved for residence only. So, on the hotel itself, my perspective is that overall, for staycation purposes, W takes the top spot for being balanced in hotel quality, location and ambience. St. Regis comes next, perhaps losing out only on the location. And RC last, despite having an excellent Bukit Bintang location, the ageing, poor view, bad carpark (not free but costing RM12 per stay) and overall hotel quality can’t save it from being relegate to 3rd place. The Suites: Being Ambassador elite, I was upgrade in all three hotels to their 1-bedroom suites. Although all three suites are completely different from one another, a direct comparison can be made between these three : St. Regis Suite, W Marvelous Suite and the RC Club Suite; since they represent almost the same category of standard suites and their standard rates are quite close to each other. These hotels have respectively higher category suites (St. Regis John Jacob suite & above; RC 2 / 3-bedroom / RC Suite / Penthouse; W WOW / EWOW). From a standard suite perspective, St. Regis is most generously sized with their St. R / Carolina Suite at 138sqm, you can really feel the size and space of this suite. It is open, airy, the furniture perfectly well spread out, great mini-bar trunk, good size walk-in wardrobe and bathroom. Really, space does matters and the St. Regis suite has an abundance of this, further coupled with high room quality. The theme is typical St. Regis, and somewhat for a staycation, you can actually feel quite at home and very comfortable. W Marvelous Suite comes next at 105sqm, it does get a little tighter here vs St. Regis suite, but it’s still fine. It doesn’t have the abundance feeling you will get in St. Regis suite, but it is sufficiently cozy and comfortable. The bedroom is in fact, large enough to squeeze 2 extra-bed in it (2 thumbs-up to W on this), just to give you an idea how well optimize the space can be. The theme is typical W – whatever, whenever with lots of mirrors everywhere. RC Club / Junior Suite is last here. It is the smallest, just 68 sqm, but typical standard rates is also lower (price is 15-20% lower, but room is 35% smaller). If you haven’t experienced the St. R Suite / Marvelous Suite, you probably would not consider this RC suite bring small. In fact, the size is quite standard suite size for KL hotel. But alas, having stays in St. R & W, you can’t help but cozy-up and appreciate the size of the suite @ St. R & W. And it is not just the size. St. R & W suites are more well equipped with better amenities, their shower cubicles are larger, bathtub bigger and towels are thicker. St. R & W also provides TWG teabags and USB port, both of which are missing from RC (this is the 1st RC I’ve been which doesn’t provide TWG). Both St. R & W provides motorized curtain, whereas at RC, it’s manual work. St. R & W provides extra-bed (thank you and thumbs-up) whereas at RC, they have zero extra-bed but will convert the sofa to bed (just put bedsheet, pillow & blanket), no more sofa after that, and RC charge you extra for that sofa bed (2 thumbs down)!!!! All three provides WiFi, but somehow, RC’s was slowest. RC was the only one which also didn’t have a mini-fridge. There was only one thing which I noted some difference, that is RC’s TV channel are better and mostly in HD, which is not the case for St. R & W. However, when it rains heavily, RC’s TV channel will get cut off!!!! Satellite problems… From a suite view perspective, I think W has better view with the suite facing KLCC. St. Regis suite faces the KL Sentral, so you’ll get views of building, unless you get the Carolina suite where you’ll face the lake gardens. RC view is quite bad, we kept the curtains closed most of the time. One thing is on the lighting, W & St. R suite have quite a bit more natural light. RC, due to the older building design, has less natural light and would rely on manual lighting. Strangely, while the RC bed & living room lighting is barely just bright enough, the bathroom is really really bright, maybe because RC’s bathroom is fully tiled with white marbles…. From a cleanliness perspective, all 3 are pretty OK though none are perfectly clean. If you look carefully in all three, you’ll find some dirty spots / stain here and there. Otherwise, it’s quite acceptable. One comment is that at RC, probably the towels used in the bathroom are the same as those used in the pool, unlike the other 2 (St. R & W), the pool towels are different from the bathroom towels, and you can tell from the colour. The beds at all three hotels are OK, we didn’t have much to complaint about the bed. But for extra bed, I’ll give this to W, going all out to make happy staycations for you and 2 kids. Having said this, one thing typical about Marriott hotels is that it does not matter what brand, what class of hotel and what room you stay in, there will always be 1, 2 or more things which you find just isn’t right with the room. So, on the Suite itself, St. Regis Suite and W Marvelous Suite takes joint top spot, with St. R gaining on size, near perfect layout and being comfortable. W gains on their extra beds, a whatever / whenever theme and a great view of KLCC twin tower. Again, RC suite comes in last. The Dining Experience: We did have the opportunity to dine in all three hotels. St. R @ The Brasserie & The Drawing Room; W Hotel @ Flock, Yen, Woobar & Wetdeck; RC @ The Library, Cobalt Room & Lobby Lounge. This included breakfast, evening drinks, dinners (buffet & ala-carte) and some quick bites. We also had high-tea at St. R & W. W provides great overall dining experience in all the 4 dining area we went to, Flock being the best. Despite the semi-lockdown, W did manage to provide the most satisfying meals, especially dinners. The people at Flock are very service oriented, and the selections are very encouraging during this period. The breakfast and buffet dinners comprises buffet-style + ala-carte, the ala-carte part of the menu has sufficient choices. W was the only one where you can get coconut for bfast, and you can also order mangos and fresh squeeze orange juice. W KL Friday retox buffet dinner is also very good and recommended, especially when you can get a 20% discount for platinum elite and above members. The one thing that W stood out is with the Wet-deck. This is an area near the swimming pool, which is a lounge area and is very active in the evenings. Normally, any St. Regis breakfast anywhere are high quality but quite limited choice, and St. R KL is no exception. The spread is very slightly lower compared to W, but retains the St. R quality which you will find as in any other St. Regis. However, my experience in various other St. Regis also is that their specialty isn’t in dinners and this is a similar experience with St. Regis KL. RC on the other hand was disappointing, and very. No doubt, RC KL had scaled down the bfast menu due to the semi-lockdown (e.g no cereal, no brie cheese etc), but compared to W and St. R, even the quality was lacking – RC KL bfast felt more like Courtyard by Marriott. Example “beef bacon” was like chewing gum… And the bfast coffee, oh dear, better off going to Lot 10 food court for some better coffee. For dinner at RC, we had a go the Library. This was also disappointing, the Tasting Menu – well, don’t expect much, its what it says – for “tasting” only, and it didn’t really taste great (and quite slow). But one nice thing though, you do get live music at RC, The Library / Lobby Lounge. A Japanese lady comes in maybe every day to entertain you with her wonderful harp music! The coffee at the lobby lounge was also much better but after the experience at the Library / Lobby Lounge, it was decided that we’ll skip Li Yen. Typically, W & St. R. does not have executive / club lounges, instead, they will give their platinum elite and above member, drink vouchers and in W case, additional vouchers for the evening Wet-deck canapés. RC’s club-lounge was closed during this time and they provided 2 drink vouchers at the lobby lounge. We also had high-tea at both W & St. R. Honestly, they are about the same, though St. R maybe provides you with a better ambience and thus, will cost you a bit more. So, on the Dining Experience, W comes in a very convincing first place. St. Regis dining within expectation and comes second. RC? – oh dear, we skipped having dinner at RC on the second night and went to Pavilion instead. I’m really not sure if this is Ritz-Carlton or Ritz-Courtyard-by-Marriott….???? The Service: Checking in at St. R, W and RC were pretty much straight forward and took similar amount of time. St. R & RC’s procedures are formal as usual, whereas W is more casual and relaxed. All 3 provided some welcome snacks at the room, so, nothing special or outstanding regarding checking in or out. Both St. R & RC have butler service, whereas W standby their Whatever, Whenever motto. We didn’t use much room service, but for the limited service which we did use, all 3 hotels responded and response time was acceptable. That’s not the same for dining service though. This goes to W which I’ll rate as excellent, especially Flock & Wet-deck, here the dining staff are a lot more attentive compared to both St. R and RC (and even compared to W’s Yen). Maybe it due to the people working at W, they are more seasoned, better trained and know what service is exactly all about. It’s not to say that St. R & RC’s dining service is bad. No, both St. R & RC’s dining services are very good too and up to par. You’ll be quite pleased with both St. R & RC’s dining services, but W’s dining service do standout. The Value and Conclusion: In most cities where there is a trio / quad of JW, St. R, RC & W hotels, Ritz-Carlton would normally be the most expensive as it is normally perceived to be the most luxurious. This is followed by St. Regis and then W Hotel / JW Marriott. For KL, if we measure the value in terms of price per sq. meter space of the suite, RC would have the highest price (~RM14.4 per sqm), followed by W (~RM10.5 per sqm) and finally St. R. (~RM8.8 per sqm). But in terms of suite price, RC is cheapest, followed by W and finally St. Regis. 3rd Place – Club / Junior Suite, Ritz Carlton Kuala Lumpur : And the review above is the reason why RC is ranked 3rd here with quite a large gap. Given the quality of the hotel, the suite size and the overall experience and ambience, it is totally not worth the value for which you pay, whether measure in price-per-sqm or price-per suite. The only thing RC KL has to offer is the location. 2nd Place – St. Regis / Carolina Suite, St. Regis KL Sentral St. Regis KL Sentral is an excellent hotel, very much at par with other newer St. Regis across this region. However, I think that St. Regis is more suited to be a business hotel and would stand out as one. Its location at KL Sentral means that transportation to the airport is a breeze and there are LRT / MRT which crosses its path too. However, for a family staycation, there is actually very little to do around there. So, despite having the largest room, and the best value, it comes a very very close 2nd to the eventual rank 1. 1st Place – Marvelous Suite, W Hotel KL Yes, I rank this 1st place. It may not have the largest suite nor the best address, but putting the whole different pieces together, coupled with the excellent Flock, W Marvelous Suite take the crown in this review. Ultimately, will I stay in any of these three hotels again? Yes, I would, and this includes RC. This is because staycation is not just about the quality of the hotel, but it is also dependent on what you want to do and the packages which the hotel can offer. And due to the pandemic semi-lockdown, I now had the opportunity to stay at these 3 hotels, as each of them offered some irresistible packages. Have fun! Note : this review will be posted on all three hotel web-page. W Hotel, being the last to be posted

My second stay at the W Kuala Lumpur, and the first as a Marriott Bonvoy platinum member. What an experience! First and foremost, a worthwhile mention is that all SOPs were properly enforced by the hotel. Due to the enforcement, many areas of the hotel are closed. Fortunately, the very kind GM Christian allowed us to take pictures at designated places within the hotel. My heartfelt thanks to Christian and his team for allowing us to do so, and we made sure to comply with the SOPs in place. The check in was fast and smooth, and the staff were extremely friendly. Surprisingly, we were upgraded to the Marvelous Suite! This may be due to my platinum status as I'm not too sure how the upgrade system works, but it was truly an amazing surprise. The room was absolutely spectacular, and our favourite highlight was the super spacious bathroom! The breakfast (see pictures) were also very delicious. The wide range of choices were impeccable to say the least. I also love that they gave me an entire jug of hot Americano instead of just a glass. How did they know I was a coffee addict :P? Really, its these little things that make your stay go beyond expectations! Last but not least, I'd like to convey my thanks to the kind receptionist that extended our check out time by an hour to 5pm upon request (platinum members are offered late check out at 4pm). The extra hour really made a big difference throughout the stay. I probably thanked the kind receptionist a good ten times as I was indeed delighted. All in all, a truly amazing stay at W hotel. For now, with the MCO still running and many restrictions in place, my gesture of thanks is limited to this review, but rest assured, once cases are back down, I'll be knocking on the doors of W once again.

An old school Luxury Hotel in the heart of Downtown Kuala Lumpur which literally takes your “views” seriously or should we say, to an entirely new level especially with the phenomenal view of the Petronas Towers at dusk from their Wet Deck. The booking and check in process was an absolute breeze with them waiting for us while we took a couple of shots of the reception area instead of us waiting for them which some hotels tend to do. Their rooms were tastefully decorated with even a panel by the bedside enabling guests to adjust the mood lighting from the comforts of their bed! From the window, you will get a pretty awesome view of the twin towers. However, it was a little too close for comfort for us so you kinda have to crane your head up a wee bit but for that view, who wouldn’t? Last but not least, the bed!! Goodness, during our stay at the Ritz Singapore, we thought that their bed was by far the most comfortable we have ever experienced. But here at W Hotel, their bed would really give the Ritz a good run for their money. It was so comfortable that we didn’t feel like leaving the bed once we got into it! The only downside about the room was that, because of their proximity to a main junction, you will get quite a fair bit of noise from the road especially at night. Beyond that, it was everything that you would expect from a Luxury Hotel, especially one which is part of the Marriott family. On first impressions, it felt as though we wandered into a contemporary art museum. Chic and stylishly designed. A little like E&O but a younger, hippie and more refreshing look. Dining wise, guests are pretty spoilt for choice with the famous Wet Deck which leans more towards cocktails and bar food and has absolutely stunning views both day and night. However, it does fill up pretty quick so we strongly recommend bookings to avoid disappointment! (We saved this for Sunset) Then there’s Flock (which we didn’t try), another restaurant tucked away at the back with a Farm to Fork on in their own words “Flock” concept which offered what looked like a pretty mouth watering Sunday Brunch. Feeling oriental and posh? Head over to Yen where Chinese cuisine is served with a twist and in a pretty stylish manner. Last but not least, feeling cheeky with a lust for a sweet treat high tea on a Sunday or simply a cocktail after sundown? Woobar is the place to be! The only downside about the room was that, because of their proximity to a main junction, you will get quite a fair bit of noise from the road especially at night. Beyond that, it was everything that you would expect from a Luxury Hotel, especially one which is part of the Marriott family. Our full review is on Instagram (@monk3yseendo)

We really enjoyed our staycation at W Hotel KL. The Marvelous Suite we got with the Marriott Bonvoy suite award upgrade had a really nice view of the Twin Towers. My wife really enjoyed her facial at the spa too. The afternoon tea and Sunday Retox brunch were really good especially the unique chocolates. We will certainly be back for the food.
