Motonago hospitality With Kyoto flavor a homy feeling. Motonago nestles in a quiet, nostalgic scene, completely apart from the hustle and bustle of the city. Once you step outside, you can sense the overflowing taste of Kyoto - Japan's old capital. All the charm of Kyoto is gathered here, where Motonago stands. On entering through a door with a tiled roof while seeing a tasteful earthen wall made using traditional techniques, Motonago welcomes you with a warm hospitality that only a humble inn like ours, with its 11 rooms, can offer. Guests can relax while enjoying dinner and breakfast in their rooms, and our staff wear traditional kimonos as they serve the meals. Kyoto style cuisine made with special seasonal ingredients succeeds in bringing the Kyoto taste, with our chefs' sophisticated skills and selected menu, to our guests.

Amazing Ryokan experience for first timers in Kyoto. Having read many reviews and how this place maybe expensive, we felt it loved upto the costs based on the location, hospitality and how well maintained the property was.
Staff were incredibly helpful and even accommodated a late vegetation request for our breakfast meal.
We stayed in two different rooms over our stay and got to experience the communal bathroom which was special too.

We spent three nights at Motonago and loved every minute of it. We arrived around 1 hour before check in and while the room wasn't quite ready the staff couldn't have been any more helpful or welcoming. They took our luggage to storage, gave us a map of the local area with a couple of suggestions of where we could visit nearby and gave us a couple of umbrellas to protect us from the rain! We had also been upgraded to a room with a private toilet and garden at no extra cost!

When we returned we received a warm welcome again (as we did every time we arrived at the hotel over the coming days) and were quickly shown to room where we were served some Japanese green tea. We then took the opportunity to try the onsen bath (you can reserve the bath for private use, 1 hour in the afternoon/evening and 30 minutes on the morning) which was unbelievable! So relaxing. We went twice a day and would recommend to do the same. It's a great way to start the day and also nice to unwind after a day of sightseeing or walking.

Location is ideal, situation in the old part of town, walking distance to many landmarks and surrounded by nice cafes and restaurants. The rooms are in the traditional Japanese style and are clean, well maintained and the WiFi coverage is excellent. We slept on futons which were comfortable and can be made more so by adding extra bedding if you require (just ask at reception).

Highly recommended!

We loved everything about this place - the hospitality, the food, the onsen bath (which you can reserve for an hour of private use), the location, and the attention to detail. We stayed in the "Syoen" room - it had a lovely private garden and a private bathroom (outside). I also really appreciated that they let us bring our luggage early and leave it after we checked out so we could maximize our time exploring Kyoto. We hope to go back one day!

Excellent location in the old town of Kyoto, only 10 minutes walk to Kiyomizudera temple and less than 5 minutes walk to Kodaiji Temple. Gion district is around 7-8 minutes walk.
The Japanese breakfast i had for three days were excellent and really delicious
The facilities are outdated but very clean
The service especially the first day I arrived i found it so ordinary the staff were all in a hurry and some of them did not speak English well
The futon bed was superb and really comfortable, the size of the room is very small 0nly 14m2

An exceptional first-class traditional Japanese ryokan in the heart of picturesque Gion district. This ryokan clearly works hard to maintain its traditional details and keep everything in excellent condition--from the immaculate shoji with yukimi (snow-viewing) panels to the freshly pressed yukata and coat in your room. We stayed one night in a room for four and then in two rooms for two--all were very comfortable and spacious tatami rooms with pretty views, air conditioning, and low tables and cushions for taking tea that appeared in the room in the afternoon. The common o-furu is reserved for your room and has a wonderful deep wooden soaking tub.

Breakfast was available at 7:30, 8:00 or 8:30 am and matched the exquisite detail of everything, both the Western breakfast (with egg, ham, toast, salad, a cute little cereal, and coffee) and the Japanese breakfast (with grilled fish, hot pot tofu, tamago rolled omelet, rice, miso soup, and tea). We did not have dinner at the ryokan so I can't comment on it.

The staff and owner are extremely friendly and helpful--appearing as if by magic when they are needed, such as to take your shoes when you arrive and make them appear when you about to go out.

The service was incredible, they were attentive to every part of our stay from check-in to meals to giving us umbrellas when anticipating rain. The food was amazing, incredibly fresh. You could also sign up for a private hour in their bath which was like a small onsen experience. Overall amazing and comfortable and would recommend to anyone staying a night in Kyoto. Well worth the price!

I stayed here for one night as the rate is pretty high but it was worth it! The staff, the location, the house itself, the food and the onsen were all really very good. It was my first stay ever in a traditional Japanese Ryokan and it helped me to understand the Japanese culture a bit better. I was travelling alone and was served both dinner and breakfast in my room but still enjoyed it although being alone.

Absolutely lovely! Staying at the Ryokan Motonago was one of the highlights for my family and myself during our trip to Japan.

It is located right in Gion and the neighborhood around the ryokan was beautiful. The streets still maintain much of a historical and traditional feel that seem to sweep you to another era in history as you’re walking through it.

The ryokan itself was just as wonderful! The staff was very courteous and welcoming. Even though our Japanese was very limited, they were able to speak some English and in the end, we did not have any major issues with language. They introduced us to our room, which was spacious and had a view into a small garden area outside. Then, they also provided a simple tea service with mochi. The room comes with internet as well, albeit somewhat slow at times.

We did not opt for kaiseki dinner, so we went out to explore the street and sightsee at night. When we returned, our futons were set up and we were treated to more tea. Then, when our reserved times for the baths came, everything was already set up for us - the bath was overflowing with hot water and they even had a small clock in the corner to help us keep time lol. It was perfect!

The next morning, we had a Japanese breakfast, which was delicious and beautifully prepared. Then when we returned back to our room, our futons were already put away for us!

If you’re looking for an experience in the ryokan, I very much recommend coming here. The staff is wonderful and staying here will make for a memorable night in Kyoto!

This ryokan is in an excellent location. Our room was very comfortable, the bath completely relaxing and the service outstanding. We had both the Western and Japanese breakfasts. They were well thought out, impeccably served and delicious. Agree that this ryokan is definitely to be recommended.

This is a wonderful Ryokan. This was our first time in Kyoto or Japan and they were very kind to us and very helpful. It was a very comfortable stay and I highly recommend the breakfast and dinner. The location is perfect and they keep their Ryokan pristine. We felt very welcomed and cared for.

There are communal bathrooms, but we had a semi-private bathroom that seemed to be shared only between the 2 rooms that we occupied. We didn't come across any other guests and were only aware that other guests were there by the signs indicating that the private baths were booked for times other than ours.
